The Singh-Ray 77mm (Thin Mount) Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter - This neutral density filter gives you the capability to use fast film in bright sunlight. ND filters have several uses and offer the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. They enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. ND filters reduce the amount of light reaching the film.

When used with a digital camera, you can effectively see how this filter works. After the initial exposure, you can check your LCD image and then make whatever change in exposure you feel you need to enhance your image. By rotating the ring, you can either increase or decrease the ND effect. This will be especially useful when trying to achieve "blurred" or "panned" shots.

The filter contains "index" points to help you mark your spot. They do not represent actual ND settings , i.e. non-calibrated - but are there to help you re-set your filter when you wish to recreate the effect.

Note! Singh-Ray cannot predict when vignetting may occur - especially with very wide angle lenses. To avoid vignetting, adjust your focal length, position, and/or composition to remove the vignetting - use your digital camera's display for reference.

Front ring can accept a Mor-Slo 5-stop Solid ND Filter or a Cokin holder for ND Grad Filters 1
Front Min/Max density ring lets you adjust density from 2-2/3 to 8 f/stops

Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses

To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situation
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure

The Singh-Ray Vari-ND Filter is a must have for those wishing to photograph water to get that smooth-flow effect. This filter gives you a choice of 2 to 8 stops, and allows you to get those 1+ second exposures when you can't drop your ISO any lower or stop your lens down to obtain the image you are trying to create. Just dial in the amount of density to suit your shutter speed or create your effect. Easy. Leave it set at 2 to focus, and dial in more if you need it. This filter is also made with a warming filter attached, so if you like that effect as well... If you only want to buy 1 ND filter, this one covers them all. Why carry 3 or 4 ND filters when you can do it with one? Granted, buying one of the others may be less expensive, but then you are confined to that single grade of neutral density. It also works awesome on those blurred ocean effects at sunset.

The only downsides to this filter are: (1) - slight vignetting at wide angles, depending on your lens. I am using it with a 24-70 f2.8 Nikkor, and the vignetting is noticeable until about 28mm. The 17-35 would experience the same thing, even with the thin mount (the one I own). I adjust my composition to account for the vignetting, and crop it out. And (2) - your factory Nikon lens cap won't work with the thin mount. If you plan on keeping this filter on your lens, I would recommend buying the slip on lens cap they offer. There are no threads on the front either, but that is not an issue for me, as I never stack filters.

Bottom line - This is not a cheap accessory, but I would recommend it as a vital part of your gear if you like blurred water effects, or need to get longer exposures. If something bad happened to mine today, I'd get another tomorrow, no question. Like most quality pieces of gear, it may cost you, but it is worth it. If you need or use ND filters, this is the one to have in your bag! (emphasis on 1! )

Here is some useful info from the Schneider web page on their variable-ND filter:

    Schneider True-Match Vari-ND Filter Disclaimer
Please note: An anomaly may occur when using a Variable ND filter when shooting wide angle (50mm and below) near to or at the highest ND point on the filter. The anomoly can be a very dark area in the center of the image, or an "X" pattern with lighter frame edges.
While all other manufactures only go up to a maximum of 8 stops Neutral Density, the Schneider Optics Vari-ND Filters boast a maximum of 11 stops ND. And because the anomaly only happens at the Max ND, no matter if the max of the filter is 6, 8, or 10 stops, that means when you use the Schneider Vari-ND filter at 8 stops, there is still no distortion in the image, where there would be in the competitor's filter that maxes out at 8 stops.
For optimal performance, we always recommend using these filters on manual exposure. Vari-ND filters are best used for video capture at any aperture or wide aperture, high shutter speed still shooting. Schneider Optics does not recommend Vari-ND filters for smaller aperture, long exposure still shooting.

Don't expect it to do what it was not designed to do. Expect some vignetting if you use a very wide angle lens. They tell you this so don't be disappointed when it does.

Comments about Singh-Ray 77mm (Thin Mount) Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter:

I use this variable (thin) filter for both stills and video. Provides wide latitude for control and creativity, particularly under a full bright sun. Slight vignetting on my 16mm fully wide, but backing off 5% resolves problem.

Quality build provides for smooth ring action.

A bit pricy, but worth it, considering the number of fixed filter sets it replaces.

I know some folks have posted a lot of complaints about vignetting and 'X' crosses, but I haven't really experienced much if any of these issues. Maybe I'm not seeing them because I primarily use this on a 50mm lens with a 72mm to 77mm step down ring.I've found this thing coming in handy many times in bright sunlight, or trying to drop a few stops to get just the right 'blurred' water effect. If I tried to do this with individual stop filters, I'd spend 3x the time trying to get a shot.Highly recommended.

This filter is fine at the lower density end of its range. The more dense it gets the more sporadic the outcome. The exposures have four distinct quarters...imagine a pie chart with four equal quadrants, the pictures taken toward the most dense setting of this filter have 2 brighter and 2 darker quadrants and is completely inconsistent. At the lower density range of this filter it does not have any issues.

Comments about Singh-Ray 77mm (Thin Mount) Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter:

You can make one of these by combining two polarizing filters together... a linear and a circular polarizer will do the trick. Combined cost about [$]. You get about a 9 stop reduction in light. Just put them both on your lens and turn the outside filter and watch the light be diminish... This is an old hollywood movie trick to create the look of night time during the day. I was told about this by a film maker and it really works. Have your camera store put two of them together and just watch as the light is diminished...

I bought the thin mount because I worried about the vignetting. Well, you will get vignetting at 24mm- plain and simple. You do not have to bring several ND filters since this is all in one product but it is very thick thus you get vignetting. And, it is not cheap but I paid for the convenience.

If you don't have this filter, you're missing out on shots. There are cases when you need the slow shutter speeds without a lot of depth of field. No problem, here comes the Singh-Ray Vari-ND. You want milky waters? You got it. You want Ferris wheels as a circle of light? You got it. You want...? You get the idea.
Only reason I gave it a 4-star is because of the price. It costs twice as much as the other filters. However, you definitely get what you pay for.

This thin I´ve been looking at for some time. This helps me do outdoor flash photo in bright sun without having to stop down. Great for shallow depth of field! :D love it,

Comments about Singh-Ray 77mm (Thin Mount) Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter:

This one filter performs the function of many. Reduce the amount of light coming through your lens by 2 to 8 stops. Simply rotate the filter to increase or decrease the effect.
Frame and focus with the filter on at minimum density. Rotate the filter to intensify the effect. It can get so dark you can hardly see through it.
Because the Vari-ND is so easy to use, it encourages experimentation with a wide range of exposures and effects.
                              Make long exposures.
                              Make selective focus easier.
                              Enhance close-up flash control.
Exaggerate the effects of panning during exposure.

Comments about Singh-Ray 77mm (Thin Mount) Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter:

I bought this to be able to preserve my shallow depth of field when shooting in bright sunlight.

It works very well. The markings are not linear, but are good for reproducible selection of the ND factor. This is important since to focus it helps to open right up first.

Good packaging and slip case. Smooth rotation. Doesn't slip around on its own.

Using this filter is a a breeze. Love it. Only suggestion is you can not put a lens cap on when you have it on, no threads on outer ring.
I love it to create single shot Ghost shots, no need to layer with PS. also love the taking the slow shutter speed shots in mid day.....

Comments about Singh-Ray 77mm (Thin Mount) Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter:

A must for all video shooters. It allows for smooth lighting adjustments when filming and the lighting changes. The ND also allows you to film in daylight at slow shutter speeds for video while also allowing to open your iris for shallow depth of field. I am going to buy a second one, because I just dropped mine on set and it broke.
