This Manfrotto 5001B Nano Retractable Compact Light Stand is perfect for supporting small light fixtures on location. The stand folds down to ~19 inches, which makes it easy to fit into a location case.
Since it has five sections, support strength is maintained as the fixture is raised; most of the column remains inside the main shaft. It has a black anodized finish.
This stand replaces 001B, 3373 and 3353. It has a 5/8" top stud, topped by a 3/8" thread, which is topped by a removable 1/4"-20 threaded top.

I bought this stand because of its compactness and lightness. The stand is great for on-location work when space is a premium and/or need a stand with smaller footprint. It is also fairly effective as a boom as an assistant can easily hold it because it is lightweight.
Because it is so light and compact, don't expect to load with heavy lighting equipment or accessories. Also, be aware that the stand is NOT air-cushioned, so when loosening sections they could slam down.

David Hobby and Bob Krist fervently endorse this compact - but flimsy - light stand; sorry, but I can't. The basic assets of portability and compactness frustratingly overridden by jello-like stability during adjustments, which means waiting... and waiting for the "tensile wavering" to subside before you can continue shooting. Why make that sort of compromise, unless excessive girth the ONLY concern?
If you barely touch your lights, or don't extend much beyond the middle range of the stand's maximum height, go for it. It's still decently constructed, with good mechanicals, but too petite to inspire much expectation at taller extension, at least with an umbrella on board. Strobe-only use may be acceptable to most.

I was in the store last month and almost bought the Manfrotto 012B Backlight Stand because I liked how compact it was. Thankfully, one of B&H's helpful experts caught me looking at it and convinced me to buy this slightly less compact, but infinitely more stable stand.

Ideal lightweight stands for speed lights on location. Light and compact for easy transport. Manfrotto quality build. You'll want sandbags to anchor these in the breeze but they will support umbrellas and small soft boxes.

Comments about Manfrotto 5001B Nano Black Light Stand - 6.2' (1.9m):
I bought this specifically for its light weight for on-location shoots. I primarily use it to hold speedlights with pocket wizards. I also needed it to extend higher than an average males height to get good lighting on their face. The stability and durability is pretty good so far. If you need the stand for anything heavier than speedlights, I probably would get something else, otherwise, this does the trick!

This stand is made in China. The rivets are better on my dogs collar... The air cushioned stand is MADE IN ITALY and is more than awesome. It folds flat and costs a little more. Don't buy this one unless you are making hobbit movies in NZ.

Pretty good little kit stand if you're looking to hold something small like a speedlight or umbrella...anything bigger and you should get a stronger stand. Very light and feels pretty solid. I use it with a small sandbag to keep it from tipping over.

If you are looking at this item, and wondering, "well is it going to work?, is it sturdy, is it going to last, are the flexible components sturdy? Are they easily breakable? Is it as compact and durable as they say"...YES! YES! YES! & YES!. Mine just came in the mail (Shipped buy UPS) today. And Let me tell you this little thing is amazing. I weighed it weighs exactly 2 lb.. The length is a little less than 19inches. The width around (stand collapsed) is about 6 inches around. Its is amazingly portable.
Sturdiness, most buy this stand for photo lighting , I use this stand to become portable for studio recording. I use this stand as a mic stand (with a 3/8 euro to 5/8 Male adapter) for my Apogee One Interface which weighs bout 1/2 a pound, then I places my AKG Mic on the Nano stand which weighs 6 lbs and rack mount which eight 1&1/2 lb. Total of 7&1/2 pounds. THEN I placed a boom on the stand a 15 inch boom weighing bout 2 lbs, with a rack mount and a studio mic almost 10lbs of weight on the nano (not to mention the balance of the boom with the mic on the end (normally light weight stand will tip over f not sandbagged but not the nano its genius design has the tripod legs of the stand so long that it not only make its sturdy and strong but gives it amazing balance, so you can place something on it that is 3 times its weight AND off balance and it will stand firm.
Durability, this things is made out of stone cold steel (I know its not really but almost) Just to test it out I had my kid jump on it (I know, I know but I test everything (9 yr old boy bout 95 lbs of muscle and cereal) I mean literally jump on it and pound on it several times aside from a few scratches NOTHING BROKE. After the mayhem I picked it up uncollapsed it placed it up and everything was perfect. I know most people think, light weight+compact= breakable. Nope! not this thing they should re name it the "Might Mouse Stand". Anyway BUY IT!

Perfect for traveling. These can fit in my Pelican 1510 and 1560 cases. I use these more as a backup stand since they do get a little flimsy when fully extended to its max height. For the few times I used the light stand at its max height, I just placed my Pelican case on the legs to act as a sandbag.

Great compact stand that I initially got to travel with. It should fit inside most standard size suitcases (not carry on size). Extends pretty high for it's size and isn't too flimsy, although it certainly isn't intended to support heavy lights. I use it with a Manfrotto umbrella adapter and shoe mount to attach speedlights. Ended up getting two with a couple of compact umbrellas and I can fit two complete setups into a Hakuba carry case. If you need a compact stand for portability, this is it. I even end up using it to attach a reflector arm to get my reflector down to low heights in studio settings. Versitle.

I've used this indoors with flash, coldshoe and umbrella. However, when I switch out my 43" to 60" umbrella, it leans and wobbles. And that's indoor weighed down with a sandbag. Outdoors? No thanks. I am keeping this strictly for indoor location work.
