Product Highlights
  • Makes Day Appear as Night
  • Popular with Cinematographers
  • Use for Film or Digital Photography
  • ColorCore Glass

The 58mm Tiffen Day-for-Night Lavender-Blue Cooling Filter produces a day-for-night photographic effect. It is an effect that makes a scene recorded in daylight to appear as if it were at twilight. Day for night filters are a cost-effective alternative to night shooting where overtime charges may apply to cast, crew and rental equipment of lighting gear.

Tiffen's ColorCore glass is produced through a process that entails permanently laminating the filter material in between two pieces of optical glass that are ground flat to tolerances of a ten-thousandth of an inch, then mounting them in precision aluminum rings.

Industry standard special effect filter
Unique visual effect makes this a highly prized filter for certain scenarios
Tiffen's ColorCore glass is sealed between two optical glass sheets. In this way, Tiffen can better control the various densities of their filters and thereby create more exact degrees of filtration. This process makes for greater accuracy of color as opposed to glass that is simply dyed and become subject to deviation during the dye process
Tiffen, a leader in the filter industry, proudly makes its filters in the USA and backs up its products with a solid 10-year warranty

Comments about Tiffen 58mm Day for Night Lavender-Blue Cooling Filter:

I think this filter is very useful especially if you don't have the budget or capability to shoot at night. The only problem I have with it is that it does not look to natural. You have to play with your settings quite a bit before you get it right but it's worth the money.

Comments about Tiffen 58mm Day for Night Lavender-Blue Cooling Filter:

This filter transforms daylight (especially overcast/diffuse daylight) into what looks like a late evening/twilight scene. It works best on video cameras that have the ability to override the auto exposure, since you will need to under-expose by 2-3 stops. If you don't, it will just look like a very blue daylight scene. Great effect filter!

Comments about Tiffen 58mm Day for Night Lavender-Blue Cooling Filter:

Using this filter near dusk (when lights are going on on streets & in houses) or in overcast conditions (when shooting outdoors, in woods, fields, etc.) is an easy solution to low-light issues when shooting a 'night time' scene. There is a learning curve & I recommend experimenting before using it for a shoot so you can figure out how it works best for your situation. Also a good idea to check out video forums for other people's experiences, which I found very helpful since these fx filters don't come with a 'user's manual' & they can be a little intimidating. Well worth the price & the learning, really nice if you're in run-&-gun mode & travelling light, time saver in quirky situations, an excellent addition to your fx bag.
