The Slik F740 Tripod is a complete tripod with panhead, designed to do double-duty for both compact point and shoot cameras as well as video cameras. Its maximum upper leg diameter is 25.4mm, and it is rated for use with equipment weighing up to 3.3 pounds (1.5kg). At a collapsed length of just 20.9" including the head, the F740's right at home attached to the outside of a backpack.
Slik focuses on the intelligence in their designs, and not just the raw support. The F740's flip-lock levers are a cut above the usual grade, with decidedly great action for a tripod most would classify as inexpensive. The F740 also has a geared center column with adjustable tension, allowing you to make fine adjustments to camera position in macro shooting without having to recompose the entire image (as you likely would with a 'rapid' column).
Keep the light stuff on the F740, and you'll be happy with its performance as a light class travel tripod.

Comments about Slik F740 Tripod w/ 3-Way Panhead:
I needed a tripod for multiple uses, and this one fits the bill. I have a guerrilla pochade that I use for plein air painting plus another attachable wooden palette that I use for workshops. Both attach easily onto the easel and are quite solidly supported. The included head with quick release attachments make changing items, setting up, and packing up quick and easy on location. It is lightweight and folds compactly enough to fit into carry on luggage or on a backpack.
In addition I use it for my Nikon 5100, which it firmly supports. Admittedly the Nikon weighs less than many DSLRs (which is one of the reasons I got it), but it seems solid even with the telephoto lens. It would probably not be ideal for someone who needs to be able to extend the legs independently at wider angles or who needs shoot from a very low stance. It IS able to telescope to close to 5 feet tall which was more important for my uses for art photography.

I would give it 5 stars but i've only had it for a couple of weeks and 5 stars requires my durability test. Very light, compact and simple to use, highly manueverable.

Comments about Slik F740 Tripod w/ 3-Way Panhead:
Surprisingly, I've experienced smoother movement and locking head control on a less expensive model from another manufacturer. This tripod locks the legs in the spread position which I needed, and that my other tripod did not have.

Comments about Slik F740 Tripod w/ 3-Way Panhead:
I use this tripod for still automotive photography. It is sturdy even with a Nikon 800-22 f/2.8 mounted. No shake, even has a built in level. Comes with a nice bag to carry it in. I would have paid more for this tripod. Best deal yet.

Pretty good Tripod. Sturdy, relatively short when folded up. Would have appreciated a spare piece to attach to the camera to.
