Product Highlights
  • 3 Stop Reverse Graduated ND Filter
  • Reduce Exposure in Selective Areas
  • Density Transitions from Middle to Edge
  • CR-39 Optical Resin
  • Compatible with Cokin Z-Pro Holder

The Singh-Ray 100 x 150mm Daryl Benson 0.9 Reverse Graduated Neutral Density Filter is unique compared to other graduated neutral density filters in that the density begins in the middle of the filter and tapers off toward the edge of the filter. The density is placed in the middle of the filter in order to help compensate for bright horizons or other circumstances when the brightest part of the image is located in the middle of the frame. Normal graduated ND filters are unable to achieve similar results due to the physical edge of the filter lying within the picture plane while photographing in a similar manner. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and the 0.9 density provides a 3 stop reduction in light from entering the lens.

Singh-Ray rectangular filters are constructed from CR-39 optical resin for high image clarity and overall durability. This filter is compatible with the Cokin Z-Pro filter holder and measures 3.9 x 5.9" / 100 x 150mm.

Reverse graduated filter places the most density in the middle of the filter to accommodate bright horizons and other situations where the brightest part of the image lies in the middle of the composition.
0.9 density provides a 3 stop reduction in light in selective areas.
Neutral density filters do not affect the overall coloration of the image.
Compatible with the Cokin Z-Pro filter holder.

Comments about Singh-Ray 100 x 150mm Daryl Benson 0.9 Reverse Graduated Neutral Density Filter:

I used this for sunsets on my most recent trip and I was very impressed with how well it worked to balance out the tricky exposure. I got shots with great color while photographers standing next to me were frustrated with the difficult lighting. It is expensive but worth it.

I used the 3 stop Sing-Ray Graduated Neutral Density Filter before I got this filter and I always ended up with sky which was too dark. Using this filter now you get a really nice sunset shot and a balance sky.

The quality of Sing-Ray filters is very high and they all come with their own leather pouch. I am very happy with the 2 filters I have.

Comments about Singh-Ray 100 x 150mm Daryl Benson 0.9 Reverse Graduated Neutral Density Filter:

I decided to get good use out of the filter before writing a review. I've had the 0.9 reverse graduated ND (4"x6") Singh-Ray filter for 9 months and used it on over 30 shoots. I clean the filter between shoots and it is still without scratches. It was money well spent.

All my standard Canon lenses use a 77mm filter so instead of buying a filter mount I find it much more effective to view the landscape through Live View and hand-hold the filter. This allows me to dodge the light on long exposures. Tilting it and dodging it up and down I can control the exposure much better. I've even used it in front of a solid 5-stop ND filter and B&H circular polarizing filter to get exposures between 5 and 30 seconds. The clouds come out beautiful and the image colors are vivid.

My fear has been that I might break the filter while in transit but it's pretty sturdy. I still plan on getting a hard-shell case to carry all 4"x6" filters.

I already had a set of Lee 4"x6" soft ND grad filters and they're the best. But they work best when the sun is high or behind you. I needed a an ND where the grad was reversed for sunset shots of the ocean. With a reverse grad the heaviest filter is on the horizon where you need it and it reduces upward from there. Lee didn't make one. From the reviews I'd read the Daryl Benson Reverse .9 grad ND by Singh-Ray was the best one out there. I used it last week for some sunset shots taken in at the Des Moines Marina near Seattle and the results totally blew me away.

I shoot sunrises and sunsets. I needed a reverse ND grad to balance overexposure on the horizon. My regular Lee ND grads work great when the sun is high in the sky but no so much when the sun is setting without totally darkening out the foreground. And Lee didn't offer a reverse ND grad. I chose the Daryl Benson .9 Reverse ND by Singh-Ray based on reviews that there is none better. I'm happy with my purchase.

Just got back from Hawaii, and the SR Rev ND Grad filter was essential for those breathtaking sunset pics. 3 stops is about right. When I looked at the histograms and opened in LR, there was no perceptible color shift. Nicely sized for hand holding and keeps in a nicely padded leatherette pouches.

Works as advertised , great for sunrise and sunset shots. I use this on a Lee Filter system . Fits fine , no issues and been using it on a 10-22 wide angle lens.

Comments about Singh-Ray 100 x 150mm Daryl Benson 0.9 Reverse Graduated Neutral Density Filter:

I own both Lee and Singhray GNDs in 4x6 and 6x6 inche sizes, and with a professional background in Thin Film & Nano Coating Technology, I like Singh-Ray filters for the following qualities.

                                  1. The transition zone of Singh-Ray is smoother (wider) providing a more natural transition, specially when the dark filter zone needs to cover over an object in the picture.

                                  2. Clouds pop out more with Singh-Ray, and colors remain truer in comparison with Lee.

                                  3. Using a hard pencil, I could test Singh-Ray's surface is harder than Lee's, and placing both on a lightbox, I can see Singh-Ray is whiter (clearer).

                                  4. Singh-Ray coating from eye inspection, seems to be coated using a vacuum sputtering process, which is the same process used to produce sunglasses. That explains the smooth transition as the metal was vaporized and transfer into the filter vs Lee hand dipping.

Since the coating utilizes metal to coat, it is more scratch resistance vs Lee ink dye system.

Vacuum sputtering process is a much more precise process, which coats surface to a specific wavelenth/nanometer in thickness, which explains why the cloud pop out more and the colors remain truer...and why Singh-Ray filters cost much more due to advanced technology cost.

No color cast. Great for sunsets and sunrise. I think the 3-stop works for most applications. I havent tried the 2-stop rnd yet. Best of all, it fits my lee filter holder set.

This is an excellent filter for shooting sunrise and sunset. The quality of this filter is very good. However, the price is too high considering it's only a piece of resin filter. As I know, only Singh-Ray produces Reverse GND, so you don't have a choice if you want a Reverse GND.

There will always be instances when shooting at sunrise or sunset when the upper part of the sky is still quite dark.
If you use a regular GND at these times, the sky just looks odd and unappealing.
The reverse GND insures you have a better transition from the bright horizon to the dark upper sky
Singh-Ray has a reddish cast though as opposed to say Lee's blueish color cast, but Lee only makes strip filters and no reverse ones
As with most resin filters, they are more prone to slight scratches than thicker glass ones

This is a must have for any photographer who is looking to capture landscape photos and balace out the skies exposure. They aren't cheap but they are durable and have accurate color. I hand hold mine but sometimes it is definitely useful to have a mount. Also, beware of fingerprints on the filter because those will show up on the photos as smudges.
