A basic beginner's model with nice slow-motion altazimuth controls, the Meade NG70-SM Telescope is a longer focal length achromatic refractor that's good for using to observe the Moon and the planets. It also can be used as a land-based spotting scope. A pair of eyepieces is included, along with a 1x Red Dot finderscope. Also included is a software DVD which gives you some maps and pointers for using a scope by sight to find the basics of the sky.

I have had several scopes of near this size (70mm) and this by far is the best one I've owned. Although slightly wobbly (warn children when they are using it) the optics in particular are spot on. I've seen refractors at 3 or 4 times this price with similar optics. This scope is best for moon, and brighter planet activities. For the price, you can't beat it. The only issue I had was in setting up the OTA on the mount. It was a tiny bit counter-intuitive and the instructions were not much help. Once I fuddled with it a bit, it all worked very nicely together. I would recommend this to any young budding astronomer. For that matter, any adult looking for a nice 70mm grab n go scope.

My son has been asking for a telescope for a while now, so we purchased this one for his birthday. It arrived quickly and has many features. You are able to view the stars, the moon and other areas in our solar system. It tilts easily so you have to tell the younger children to be careful. We are very happy with the telescope and will be purchasing other items for it in the near future!
