The Celestron Travel Scope is a quality, easy-to-use medium refractor for use on the go.  Its 2.8" objective lens is sufficient for very pleasant use as a spotting scope, and it is combined with a 45° erect image diagonal which is well suited to that purpose.  The Travel Scope's also practical as an astronomical scope for lunar, planetary, and wide star field viewing-as a 400mm f/5.7 refractor design, each of these pursuits will be quite pleasurable.

Celestron includes a pair of 50° apparent field 1.25" eyepieces, but you can of course use any 1.25" eyepiece you like.  Add an optional 90° star diagonal for high-overhead viewing, or a straight through erecting porro prism for terrestrial viewing from elevated positions.

A 5x24 finderscope with quick-release bracket and full-size pan/tilt tripod round out the Travel Scope package, and the whole assembly fits into a dedicated backpack Celestron designed for simple storage and packing.

I purchased the 70mm TravelScope with an open mind, hoping to get a low cost, portable spotting scope that might be elevated to the next level of performance with a few tweaks. That is precisely what I got.
The Travelscope arrived promply and was packaged very well. I assembled the basic scope and put in the 20x (20mm) eyepiece for a quick view- not bad. Sharpness and contrast was good, not phenomenal but certainly acceptable. Next came the 40x (10mm) eyepiece which showed a noticeable decrease in image sharpness and contrast.
Being very familiar with optical testing and adjustments, I rebaffled the scopes interior and carefully realigned its optics (which turned out to be of excellent quality). Now I have a scope that performs very well at powers from 12x-80x.

The tripod is way to flimsy and unstable. Very difficult to keep the scope focused because there is so much movement if just touched or bumped a little (including light wind). The Optics will let you see all the craters on the moon clearly. Stars are out. Planets you can see but not as clear as some other peoples telescopes I have used in the same price range.

Comments about Celestron Travel Scope 2.7"/70mm Refractor Telescope Kit:

This small 70mm refractor is great for what you pay for it. The included 45 degree diagonal and eyepieces are acceptable for terrestrial viewing. The finder scope is not easy to see through at night. The included carrying bag is nifty, but the tripod is cheap and unstable. Trying to center anything in the eyepiece is next to impossible if you're looking for objects in the night sky. Speaking of, don't expect impressive views of anything except for the moon. Even Jupiter is somewhat disappointing, particularly if you've seen it through a more expensive telescope. Globular clusters can be made out in non-light-polluted skies if seeing conditions are good. Probably the best uses for this telescope are as follows: child's first telescope, guide scope, daytime terrestrial viewing. If you're an adult looking for an inexpensive astronomy scope, spend a bit more on a newtonian reflector on an EQ mount.

Comments about Celestron Travel Scope 2.7"/70mm Refractor Telescope Kit:

I bought this as a gift for my husband. It has been great. We live in the city so it's perfect size for our apartment. It gives amazing views of the moon. If you're looking for a starter scope like us, this is perfect for the price. On a side note BH packaging and shipping couldn't be better! Shipping was fast and free of charge!

Comments about Celestron Travel Scope 2.7"/70mm Refractor Telescope Kit:

I bought this as a starter scope to view the moon and planets. As for planets, it is better than binoculars but not a lot of detail is visible. It is very good for viewing the moon as the details really pop on a clear night. The scope is light and reasonably priced. Now for the downsides. The fit of the diagonal into the scope is very sloppy. The locking screws do hold it tight but I wonder if the alignment of the optics is affected by it not being perfectly centered. I'm not an experienced astronomer so I cannot tell if it affects the viewing. Next issue is my diagonal arrived dented where the eyepiece is inserted, and the eyepiece would not go in. I tried using a hot knife handle to soften and form the dent in the plastic out, but that didn't work. A few minutes of careful shaving of the dent with an Exacto knife got the dent down to the point where the eyepiece would go in. Lastly the tripod is light and very flimsy. It is better than nothing but if you have a sturdy camera tripod use that, or pick one up at a garage sale. On a decent tripod the scope is quite usable.

It's a solid scope. The stand is a little wobbly but for the price it is a very good deal! Great for birdwatching to viewing the moon. I bought this because it could be.expanded on. I intend on getting the 2x lens to go with it.

Comments about Celestron Travel Scope 2.7"/70mm Refractor Telescope Kit:

I bought this telescope as a gift for my 10 year old nephew and he seems very happy with it. I setup everything, the telescope itself feels very solid, with good optics, but the tripod that came with it is extremely flimsy and unstable. My copy had a faulty erect image diagonal but I contacted Celestron costumer support and the shipped me a new one right away. Excellent company. Highly recommended product.

Comments about Celestron Travel Scope 2.7"/70mm Refractor Telescope Kit:

The temptation for this review is to give the product less than 5 stars but I am resisting that temptation. The reason is that the cost is so small that you have to concede that you got more than what you paid for. I set the scope up for my 5 year old niece at her height and put the full moon in the 20mm eyepiece and she was thrilled. There you have it, it was worth every penny.

I use the scope without the diagonal (which is for terrestrial viewing) as a nice finder/guide scope for my refractor. It makes a nice finder with a 32mm plossl or it actually will guide in good seeing conditions using my nexguide autoguider.

The extras are a nice bonus: backpack, 45 degree diagonal, 20mm and 9mm eyepieces. I highly recommend the scope for its versatility and for the minimum cost.

Comments about Celestron Travel Scope 2.7"/70mm Refractor Telescope Kit:

Got this for planetary stuff. I'm in NYC so there is a lot of light pollution- basically you need help to see more than 10 stars, and of course I wanted something I could look at planets with. This was a great scope- I basically wanted a small 70mm+ scope that is compact and it does a great job. Jupiter, and Mars are easy targets and I can see lots of dim stars with it. Some of the included accessories aren't that great- the finder I don't use and the tripod aren't useful at all. The eyepieces are fine, and although the scope has a t-mount thread, you have to bring the focuser all the way out to use a camera. I prefer to use a photo adapter, which makes switching between eyepieces and a camera easier. If you've got a rigid tripod, and want a small scope with minimal investment, this does the job. Setup is easy and quick, and it's something I can bring to my backyard for 20 minutes without much hassle.

Comments about Celestron Travel Scope 2.7"/70mm Refractor Telescope Kit:

I have used C8's, C6's, C90's, and now having the 70mm I have used the best portable Scope. In Hawaii, my wife and I were able to look out of our cottage at the ocean and see dolphins and whales. When ships went by we could see the people faces on deck. Walking through the forest we saw birds a half a mile away just like you were standing next to them. Because the Travel Scope is lite, we took it anywhere and everywhere. I used a Solar filter and say the May 20th eclipes. Set up is very easy and I can see my 10 year old nephew getting this scope this Christmas. I know he will have no problems setting the scope up or using it. I would love to see a better tripod that you get, that does not take anything away from this Scope. If you have used a Telescope before or never have, the Travel Scope/70mm is one that will teach you about how refracting telescopes work and you will ask yourself, why didn't i get this years ago.
Get this Scope and change your life!

Used it two nights. Decent optics for price but poor mount detracts from usability. It is highly portable though.

Comments about Celestron Travel Scope 2.7"/70mm Refractor Telescope Kit:

The telescope itself is very easy to use, good basic quality for the amateur astronomer. The tripod seems cheap, though, and the horizontal adjustment doesn't hold at all.

Comments about Celestron Travel Scope 2.7"/70mm Refractor Telescope Kit:

I take this scope with me when I travel. Tripod is not great but I expected as much for the price. I planned to use this scope on my camera tripod anyway. Scope is nice.
