Voigtlander Color-Skopar 20mm f/3.5 SL II N Aspherical Lens for Nikon F

You Pay: $549.00
Product Highlights
  • Aperture Range: f/3.5 to f/22
  • One Aspherical Element
  • Built-In CPU Supports AE Metering
  • Manual Focus Design
  • Knurled Metal Focusing Ring

The Nikon F-mount Voigtlander Color-Skopar 20mm f/3.5 SL II N Aspherical Lens is an ultra-compact, sturdy manual focus lens featuring traditional high-quality Japanese construction and classic styling. The Color-Skopar is a perfect choice as a wide-angle lens for those wanting high performance in a prime all-manual lens. This lens is part of the SL II series, which feature a CPU (Central Processing Unit) built into the lens to support all of your camera's metering functions as well as control the aperture setting via the camera's command dial.

The manual focusing movement, aided by the knurled metal focusing ring, of the Color-Skopar is satisfying to operate and worlds apart in action from doing the same with autofocus lenses. This lens offers an f/3.5 maximum aperture, but unlike most zoom lenses, it will perform nearly as brilliantly at f/3.5 as it will at friendlier apertures of f/5.6-11.0. The focusing helicoid can extend far from the body on the Color-Skopar to allow a minimum focusing distance of just 7.9".

I have been using this lens in the south of france to capture the beautiful landscape and light. I use this lens on a nikon D800 the center sharpness is amazing however the edges and corners are not sharp at all unless you stop down to around F/11. Even then the edges are what I would call "soft".
I think I need to point out that this is a pancake lens and you sacrifice some image quality for it's small size. If you are looking for a light weight travel lens to though in your pac and go hiking this is the lens for you but if you want corner to corner detail look elsewhere.
All in all this is a good lens I take it everywhere with me. It is all metal and built very well so I dont worry about it breaking. it has moderate chromatic aberration at the edges but it easily correct in photoshop. Dont be scared off by the manual focus. it's very smooth and the lens has a large depth of field so if you stop down to a f/16 there is almost no need to focus it.

Best flare suppression of any lens I've used, rich color. However, shot on a D700 this was a disappointing optic. Needs stopping down to f/11 for sharpness over just 85% of the frame which was inadequate, color fringing evident at that aperture. Not usable at max aperture at all. Probably acceptable on a crop sensor, though.

Comments about Voigtlander Color-Skopar 20mm f/3.5 SL II N Aspherical Lens for Nikon F:

The sharpness and color this lens delivers are superb, especially considering how small of a package it is. For landscape and even architecture, it delivers incredible images right out of the camera. Distortion is there, of course, but it's minimal and easily corrected. A lot of poeple have been talking about the corners being perpetually soft, especially in lab testing, but this is not the case, in my experience (and a few others). Corner softness occurs when you're close-focusing. Anything around 10 feet or beyond (where you'd be hyper focal) yields corner to corner sharpness at f/5.6 on my copy. f/8 and f/11 are tack-sharp! Still, I could see some people not liking that. There is also the vignetting issue in the view finder - it's not the brightest image in there. That's the toss up for such a small lens, I guess. Not perfect, but close enough, and very much worth the money for me and my uses.

Comments about Voigtlander Color-Skopar 20mm f/3.5 SL II N Aspherical Lens for Nikon F:

I travel quite a bit and am used to packing a 16-35, which I am very happy with, but I find I shoot this zoom mostly at the wider end, so when I had the chance to borrow a Voigtlander 20mm for a month I was eager to see how it compared. The Voigtlander has a reputation for edge softness, and this is somewhat true when it is wide open, however I find I am never using it opened up - rather the opposite. My main use for this lens is landscape work on a D800 and it is almost always on a tripod and usually at f11-f16, and here I find it very sharp indeed across the entire frame, easily better than the 16-35, which is not a bad lens. Manual focus is a pro, not a con, and this lens has very smooth and positive focusing and a very usable focus scale that makes it a dream to use. At f16 depth of field is 0.5 meter to infinity, so auto focus is entirely unnecessary. I find the 20mm focal length ideal for most situations, and am very pleased with the colour accuracy and lack of distortion from this lens. The lens is exceptionally well built, and is so small and weighs so little that it is always going to have a place in my bag. My only complaint lies with the lens cap - it doesn't stay on well for some reason- this was true of the one I borrowed as well as the one I bought, and I highly recommend getting a screw-on cap. This lens is the best I have used for not producing lens flare, and I have used it with the expensive hood you can purchase as an accessory as well as without, and I would say to save the 40 bucks as a hood is not necessary. I routinely add filters to this lens, and have absolutely no vignetting issues with a 77mm slim profile polarizer that is attached via a series of 4 step-up rings, in fact the 4 step-up rings together are almost exactly the same shape as the optional lens hood.
Bottom line - this a sweet little landscape lens that produces very sharp results in the aperture range useful for landscape work. It will not displace a wide fast zoom with autofocus and vibration reduction for everyday walk-around shooting, but would be a great additional landscape lens. I love it.

I bought this lens for my 6D after using the 40mm pancake. I was looking for a wide angle lens to add that would be light weight and small. Very easy to manual focus and looks great on the camera. The lens cap isn't very good and should be replaced.

It is a very well made pancake lens with great image quality, the vignatting is not that bad. The focus ring is butter smooth.

The lens cap is too big for the little lens and doesn't fit the B+W XP-PRO UV.

Since the lens is quite small, focus ring and aperture ring move, it will be a little hard to attach the lens. No place to hold, maybe because I have big fingers.

Comments about Voigtlander Color-Skopar 20mm f/3.5 SL II N Aspherical Lens for Nikon F:

I bought this lens for use on a NEX-7 because of it's size and quality. I also have the "Voigtlander 40mm f/2.0 Ultron SL II Aspherical Lens for Nikon" which I got with this lens. The build quality is absolutely outstanding - better than the Nikon 20mm lenses. The manual focus is smooth as silk with no play and has good precision. An absolute joy to use since it is full manual only. I use an adapter for the NEX-7 so I make notes of the apperture used for each shot. If you know Zeiss lenses then you will feel comfortable with this Voigtlander since it is similar in quality. The focus scale (distance scale) is great and works like a charm with presetting manual focus for landscapes. Sharpness is also excellent right up to the edges, especially between F5.6 and F16. Have not used it on the D800E yet so I cannot comment on full frames.

I use it on my Fujifilm S5 Pro camera, wich is basically a Nikon D200 with a Fujifilm sensor. It is remarkably linear and very easy to work with, both outdoor and (with flash) indoor.

It can be tricky to get maximum sharpness, but I don't blame the lens for that. The modern DSLR cameras are not really made for manual focusing.

I love the light weight and quality operation of this tiny lens. It's sweet spot is F/8 or f/11. Set it there for sharpness and vibrant/Velvia like colors that rival the much larger and more expensive lenses. I use mine on a Nikon D300. Not sure how it fairs on a full frame digital body though.
