Given the not-so-hot battery life, a second battery is a must. Any road, I have a spare regardless of projected battery life. Just good practice if the photos are important to you.

Given the Panasonic announcement about third-party batteries, I'd stick with their label. The worst that can happen is you'll pay too much. I've experienced what happens when you pay too little for a knockoff. Not good. Bite the bullet; pay the price; buy from B&H.

Battery life is shorter than expected
Need to have a back-up battery ready to go since the longevity of battery life during camera use is not as I expected. If you are prepared for this, things will be OK.

There are a lot of aftermarket batteries out there, many which are good on form and fit, but have slightly different voltage or amperage. While in many cases the slight variations don't matter, in some instances, only the exact OEM specifications will result in the performance you desire: it just works. This battery is one of the few where the aftermarket varieties differ from the OEM specs. I've tried a variety of cheaper alternatives, but this OEM battery is the only one that just works.

I plan to never run out of battery power again! We do not use the cmera consistently enough to make sure that the battery is constantly at full charge. This second battery fully charged as back up solves our porblem of occasionally running low on juice. Exact match to the original product even after two years post original purchase. Thanks.

The only batteries that ever leaked in my experience were no name batteries. This is an expensive hobby. I can't see risking an expensive camera to save a few dollars on a battery.
I bought this battery as a backup. Cameras eat batteries and it's a good idea to have a fully charged backup.
