As a long-time AJA user, when it came time to upgrade my system to support HD capture, I immediately researched AJA's offerings. After days of check specs, I finally decided on the LHi. I'm definitely glad I did!

This card was super easy to install and configure - if you're on a 2008 Mac Pro, though, be sure to run the PCIe Configuration utility to ensure that you're allocating the right speed to that bus.

I was up and running in less than 15 minutes - the installation program was easy to follow, and the included AJA Control Panel was familiar and easy to use, as well.

Seamless integration with Final Cut Studio had me up and running, capturing full HD video mere minutes after installation.

The Up-Conversion feature also produces excellent quality 720p video from standard a standard NTSC source, as well.

If you're in the market for a low-cost HD capture card, this is definitely for you.

In the 1990's I had a Media100 system with its own breakout box (Vincent card) which was relatively simple and worked very well. As such proprietary (and seamless) digitizers are no longer available, edit systems refer us to boards like the Kona card. In my case, the LHi was recommended by the manufacturer for my Apple system.

I had a deadline on a project and needed a digitizer. After reading the reviews I felt comfortable that the LHi would do the trick (as many reported being up and running within 15 minutes). It was pricey, but needing something of high quality I went for it, in the hopes it would save me time down the line.

After some experience with the card I've come to the following conclusion:
The Kona LHi card is steaming, festering, oozing, undulating, malignant, cankerous, massive pile of putrid, rotting trash.

The driver, of which there are dozens of variants, is extremely product specific. So depending on the hardware, software, OS, version of your application, etc. you must use and install a different driver for each. The most recent driver does not work on all configurations, causing you to back track, search and do a lot of trial and error in finding the correct one. In addition, the card has settings for at least 100 different types of resolutions, sources & formats. If you don't know exactly what is coming out of your source (and configure the settings accordingly) that source often won't even be recognized.

After finding the correct driver, after finding the correct formats and resolutions, after updating and installing and configuring and testing- the card still wouldn't reliably get video into my system. Sometimes I'd get video (using FCP 7, Media 100 and FCP X) and sometimes it would just be blank. When I did get video and or sound, it would often not be of useful quality.

Why so angry, you ask? Isn't this an issue of Apple and not AJA? No, and I'll tell you why... because there's no good reason for all the complications. With a simple HD camcorder and firewire plug (which I eventually settled on using because I had no time to do anything else) I was not only able to import higher quality video than the LHi, but was able to do it completely independent of my system configuration, without jumping through driver and setting hoops, without spending hours on the web researching & debugging -and without spending $1,500 for a piece of junk masquerading as a tool to help video editors get their work done.

Why they make it so hard when it doesn't have to be is maddening.

Comments about AJA KONA LHi Capture Card:

We now have one of these cards in all our machines. They are great high quality cards that work great in Mac Pros on FCP 7 and FCP X. A key feature of us is the integrated deck control which makes it a great professional capture option.

On the downside the mini-HDMI cable it ships with is a tough item to replace. It is not micro, but mini so you may want to order another when you get this card so you can use HDMI in and out.

Grea for after effects and FCP previews. nice that i can plug in via HMI and use a standard TV monitor. Its great using a true preview monitor, but there is something to be said about previewing on what your audience will most likely have in their home. Not to mention the savings from not buying the true studio monitor.

AJA makes a fantastic product. This is the second card we have purchased. Basically replacing our LHe. One of my favourite things is the great tech support AJA provides when you need it.

We did discover the breakout cable on this unit was defective (buzzing problem with analog xlr connectors), but AJA sent out a replacement right away.

I first had the IoLA, but it didn't support HD formats, so I traded it in and got the Kona LHi. It supports almost every common resolution and frame rate, and it can also up convert, downvert, and cross convert. Installation and set up is very easy. It was my first time ever installing any hardware in any computer, so I was very nervous. It was literally plug-n-play. The only small con is that the fan is a little loud, but after a while you tune it out.

We use this card mostly for playback to a plasma monitor in our studio via the component out, but will soon be using it to digitize archived BetaSP footage. It works great and was easy to install in our Mac Pro. The card comes with a breakout cable that has component, composite or SGI in/out as well as a Mini HDMI / HDMI and balanced XLR audio.

Comments about AJA KONA LHi Capture Card:

It is an amazing card like a Ferrari car who can fly and cruise too! We do have some valuable footage in SD format and now we are able to up-convert into HD in RT.
