Anyone that has purchased the Canon HF S10 or HF S100 camcorders (or similar prosumer level camcorders) quickly comes to realize the irritation of limited wide-angle capability in some situations. I have the Vixia HF S100, which is a fantastic camera by the way, and has incredible optics at this price level. But for those close-in candid shots of people, or to get a real sense of location in medium or long shots, you definitely crave a few extra few mm of wide angle perspective. And for documentary work, I find the wide-end is generally more useful than extremes of focal length.
I did a quick check and it seems most semi-pro "to-go" zoom video lenses go down to about 30mm (35mm equivalent). The Lens on the Vixia HF S100 / S10 has a minimum focal length of 43.5mm, so x0.7 converts it to around 30.5mm, putting it in good company with many more expensive peers.
Okay, so how is the WD-H58 in use? I have to say I am really very impressed. I have done still photography for some years and played around with various optical systems: Add-on lens converters are often a manufacturer's after-thought and inevitably a crude design compromise, resulting in visible degradation of image quality - resolution, contrast, chromatic fringing etc.
Clearly Canon did their homework on this one, and I would hazard to guess conceived the WD-H58 from ground-up, in conjunction with the built-in Vixia lens. Images are crystal clear. Without the aid of optical tests I would be hard put to know that I actually had a converter on - except that the world is now a bit bigger.
The only apparent artifact is slight barreling at the extreme wide end. This is par for the course for most wide angle lenses, unless you want to pay lots of money. On architectural scenes this might be an issue for some, but will be unnoticeable or irrelevant for most users.
Overall I would highly recommend this accessory. To me it brings the Vixia up a big notch in functionality, and all that glass looks pretty cool too! Basically, the thing is fused permanently to the front of my camera. As a budding documentary maker I can now comfortably frame all my shots, and the results are just stunning.

It very good wide angle converter lens as it allow you to have the best quality of Video and Image. I use it with my Canon HF S21. I think this is the best quality wide angle converter for my canon camcorder. However it super heavy!!!!! you need the tripod to go with this. If you think by carrying tripod is not possible or you filming just for fun please do not buy this as when you zoom. It will give you an unstable video as the weight of the lens On the other hand with the tripod the weight is not the problem at all ^^ so this thing work very great.

This lens has a quality build. Helps you get everything into the frame without much distortion. It does tend to soften the image a little though, at least when shooting under lower light conditions. I didn't notice any softness outdoors during the day.

Comments about Canon WD-H58 Wide Converter Lens (0.7x):
The fine piece of metal and glass is amazing. The WD-H58 really widens the image dramatically. The cost is steep, unless you catch it on special, as I did at B&H. I wanted this to compliment my Canon Vixia HF S200 and it's a perfect fit. I previously tried an inexpensive W/A converter and the image was horrible at the edges soft and color abberation. This will be used for taping church services and weddings where many people wouldn't normally fit into the frame and in cramped places. This lens is heavy and feels very substantive in the hands. It helps improve image contrast and with it's full multi coated green and purple lens it cuts harsh light glare. This item does it job and looks professional on the camcorder too.

The Canon WD-H58 Wide Converter is the perfect compliment to my Canon Vixia HF S200. This fine piece of metal and glass widens the image from my video camera considerably. The full multi coated lens, with it's deep green and purple hue really blocks stray light and adds contrast to the images. This instrument is heavy and feels substantial in the hands. Almost bought the Raynox HD Pro 6600. I'am glad I went with my camera manufacturer Canon because their lens would be a perfect match to their equipment. Also B&H photo service is great and professional too

Comments about Canon WD-H58 Wide Converter Lens (0.7x):
A huge investment. Get closer and intimate. Get spacious. Whatever. A true quality piece of gear. Now admittedly, it is bulk, a bit heavy, etc., but for what it does (and does well), it is necessary. I dismiss cons that are self-obvious such as - adding weight to the front. Any good optic adds weight and shifts balance. And as a general rule, wider POV is often necessary and there are only a couple of pieces of gear that simply do this well.

I have been doing some filming lately with my Canon HFS21 and have found myself needing more range. So I did some research and found a few wide angle options for my camera. I chose this Canon lens due to the fact that it has little to no distortion and did not diminish quality at all. As a matter of fact it appears to have improved the optical quality on my camera. My videos tend to appear sharper than they do without it. It is a very well made, high quality lens that I highly recommend for anyone who has a camera with a 58mm filter diameter. I just absolutely love this lens, this is THE wide angle to buy!

I mostly do outdoor wildlife video and now use ground blinds that are easy to video out of but without this lens they are difficult to video inside of. The ability get interior shots now is a great asset to completing a video and the lens is as true in color and has no vignette. I know it will be great indoors as well.

All I can say is WOW! The build quality of this lens is top notch! Shooting indoors is so awesome now. I can fit more people in the frame at a closer distance. Outside is awesome too. I own the Canon Vixia HF S20. The auto-focus works perfectly through this lens. I can use the full zoom range with no problems. I plan to pretty much leave this lens on my camcorder all the time. As some others have said, the lens cap is very hard to remove. This is not the case for me. It is tight enough so it won't come off in my camera bag. My video kinda looks sharper with this lens. Very pleased!

Comments about Canon WD-H58 Wide Converter Lens (0.7x):
My raison detre for getting into video was to better capture panoramic landscapes. This lens mounted on the S30 knocks it out of the park. One sweep and you have captured the scene as well as the audio background that gives the place it's ambiance.
I've been photographing weddings, parties, family dinners and other family gatherings for decades and have learned to love the wide-angle lens and its ability to shrink the room. Indoors this lens does everything my SLR lenses do but do it in a much more compact way.
The lens weighs as much as the camera I use with it. That comes with the territory when you try to bend light as any SLR photographer knows. Yet, oddly, the lens does not alter the balance perceptively. Perhaps I have a more robust wrist than those who have noted some difficulty. I also find that the extra mass enhances the stability of the camera.

This thing is expensive, BUT.... it will add a very professional look to your film projects so in the end it will pay for itself. I found a Cavision lens hood 77mm that you can use with this lens if you just patiently sand the plastic interior ring of the lens hood, but don't do this if you're not good with do it yourself type of things......
If you can, I would recommend buying the teleconverter lens as well, have both for virtually unlimited shooting possibilities.
