The Singh-Ray 77mm Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter - This neutral density filter gives you the capability to use fast film in bright sunlight. ND filters have several uses and offer the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. They enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. ND filters reduce the amount of light reaching the film.

When used with a digital camera, you can effectively see how this filter works. After the initial exposure, you can check your LCD image and then make whatever change in exposure you feel you need to enhance your image. By rotating the ring, you can either increase or decrease the ND effect. This will be especially useful when trying to achieve "blurred" or "panned" shots.

The filter contains "index" points to help you mark your spot. They do not represent actual ND settings , i.e. non-calibrated - but are there to help you re-set your filter when you wish to recreate the effect.

Note! Singh-Ray cannot predict when vignetting may occur - especially with very wide angle lenses. To avoid vignetting, adjust your focal length, position, and/or composition to remove the vignetting - use your digital camera's display for reference.

Front ring can accept a Mor-Slo 5-stop Solid ND Filter or a Cokin holder for ND Grad Filters 1
Front Min/Max density ring lets you adjust density from 2-2/3 to 8 f/stops

Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses

To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situation
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure

    This "set" of filters is great for travel photography and for anyone trying to lighten their load. The initial investment is a bit steep, but compared to buying all the filters this one does, it's a good value.

    I used mine for the first time last week for mid-day photography on a Mexican beach and was able to slow my shutter to 15 seconds! Yes, at midday!

    I added a split neutral density filter and got some great shots, but also some garbage. You must be careful about how light strikes the front of filters - especially stacked filters.

    Because this set is thick, it may cause vignetting on wide angle lenses - it does with my Nikkor 17-55mm, f/2.8.

    It's a great addition to my bag and I recommend it!

    I needed a neutral density filter (or several) to slow down my shutter speed during time lapse and nature photography. I was drawn to the Singh-Ray based on several reviews and especially as it offers multiple grades of density simply by a twist of its outer ring. So, here's my take:1. Great optical clarity.2. Good performance over its range of density3. Definitely not good with wide angle! (You get zones of darkness, not uniform darkness at less than 20 mm based on my experience.)4. High price.5. As received, the filter had a light film of fog over both glass surfaces. I suspect this was due to it being shipped in a plastic bag. Sheesh. If I were to do this over, I would use the money to buy a couple or three solid neutral density filters instead of one variable filter. That said, I plan to keep the Singh-Ray for now.

    Comments about Singh-Ray 77mm Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter:

    Camera= D600 (full frame)
    Lens= Wide at 24mm
    Lens thread=72mm
    Filter thread=77mm
    72mm to 77mm step up ring used
    I got white edge vignettes at 24mm which were on their way out at 35mm and the black "X" pattern at high filter setting. If I'd buy this again I'd consider it to be a 2-6 stop Variable ND filter and not to 8 unless it clears up at a longer focal length but my settings as explained above gave me literally unusable photos. I must say, do your homework before buying a filter like this. Research the "X" pattern with Variable ND filters and understand what can go wrong before you spend the money. I thought I read up on it but obviously not enough. I'm sure this is a nice filter but I have since returned it.

    Comments about Singh-Ray 77mm Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter:

    The product itself is well built and I'm pleased with the results at dusk/ night so far.
    The maximum settings on this filer will give you a purple color cast, so I avoid using it at those settings.

    Due to my inexperience with this type of filters, when I bought it I thought it would give me enough stops to shoot in daylight or sunset for over a minute exposures.. but the truth is that is not enough.. So I will buy a MOR SLO 10 or 15 to darken the image further and therefore achieve longer exposure times without blowing the highlights

      I use this filter on my 5d mk3 and it works well. Anything wider than about 30mm and you'll get some very noticeable vignetting on a full frame sensor but its easily compensated for. I have used it stopped almost completely down and have never noticed any color casting at all. I've used cheaper vari nd's as well as the old two polarizer trick but this far surpasses both.

              Comments about Singh-Ray 77mm Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter:

              I spent quite a bit of time deciding if I should spend the extra money on this Singh-Ray variable ND filter or try to get one of the less expensive options from Hoya or Tiffen (Off-brand is likely not worth it as they still cost a lot and the quality is not well known). I ultimately decided after reading through some reviews to go with the Singh-Ray. The Tiffen reported having issues at the max setting with a dark "X" pattern showing up and affecting the image. The Hoya was not in stock and I could not find much info on it, however I have had good experience with their filters. I ultimately decided to go with the more expensive Singh-Ray based on the positive reviews and my great experience with their 4x6 ND and Grad ND filters. I was not disappointed. This is a very well made filter. I am very pleased with in construction, use and image quality. This is a 2-8 stop filter and 8 stops is dark, but very useful. It works great for hiding wandering pedestrians/tourists in scenes and also getting some great bokeh by using lenses with a wider aperture in bright daylight, plus many other uses. I do not know if spending a extra on the slim mount version is worth it. I've read reports that on ultra wide angle lenses, such as in the 14-20mm range, you will get vignetting with both the standard and slim so I ended up getting the standard. So far I have only had slight vignetting which is easily taken care of in post so I am pleased with my choice.

                    I primarily use this filter for my 24-105 lens when I shooting outdoor events. Everything is fantastic on it except when zoomed out (24 to 30 range) when I start to notice a vignette caused by the filter's depth. Other than that, great filter.

                      This filter is a great addition if your goal is to force a slow shutter speed with an aperture and light conditions that otherwise meter a faster speed as correct exposure. Easy to adjust while metering through viewfinder -- just turn the filter and watch the exposure needle head for zero as the image darkens. Very well made and easy to use.

                      I use this filter to slow shutter speed for blur shots, and (with another filter) for sun photography. It provides great flexibility in terms of lengthening exposures, introduces no distortion and does what it is supposed to. The one drawback, uneven skies and color shifts in the frame, especially with wide angle lenses. The greater variance in angle to the sun in the frame, the more color shift. It's as much intensity as tonal shift in most instances. Frankly, it seems a bit pricey for what it is, but there is nothing else like it on the market to my knowledge.

                        Specifically bought for video on the Canon 5D, this filter essentially serves as my iris while shooting video. Full 8 stop range makes it useful in sunlight and shade. Far superior to the Polaroid version and at 3 times the cost, it better be. But the optics are superb and the resulting shallow DOF is gorgeous!

                              Comments about Singh-Ray 77mm Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter:

                              I'm a Pro scenic landscape-nature and travel photographer. I'm often confronted with a situation where an ND filter is necessary to create an artistic touch for a marketable print. Before the Vari-ND filter I may have found myself composing with the tripod on wet slippery rocks photographing a waterfall or river scene. I would need to compose, focus and then find a way to install either an ND6 or ND10 without sliding into the river or worse dropping an expensive filter. Those days are now over! I can set up, compose and focus with the Singh-Ray vari ND in place while on the lightest setting and simply adjust the filter like a Circular Polarizer.

                              This is a must have for any serious fine art landscape photographer. I use this whenever I shoot in broad daylight. A great tool to slow your shutter speed and give more drama to an image. The best part about it is how you can dial the amount of light you want to capture.

                                  Comments about Singh-Ray 77mm Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter:

                                  I bought this filter to add a new dimension to my photography by allowing me to use longer shutter openings to show movement of certain elements in my images. It works well because the user can set the filter to MIN for composition and focusing, then rotate to darker for exposure. The user must use the histogram to determine the proper exposure since the camera's light meter most likely will not indicate correctly. Shooting in full manual is best, of course.
