The Sony SAL-30M28 30mm f/2.8 DT Macro Autofocus Lens is a compact and portable macro lens specially designed for close-up image-making. With it you can walk up to your subject and capture images from just 4.8" inches away, in outstanding clarity and detail.

Being a Sony DT Alpha lens, it is not recommended for use with 35mm full frame cameras. However, when attached to a cropped APS-C sensor DSLR, it has the 35mm equivalent angle of view that you would get with a 45mm lens. It captures a 1:1 reproduction ratio, making your subjects appear life-sized.

It is operated by a Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) for quiet and responsive AF performance. It also has a 49mm front-end filter thread so you can attach accessory filters onto it for added benefits and effects.

APS-C 35mm Equivalent: 45mm
This 30mm macro lens is an "everyday" focal length with the benefits of macro optical properties, with the 35mm equivalent angle of view of a 45mm lens.
Aperture Range: f/2.8-22
With a maximum aperture of f/2.8 and minimum of f/22, this lens' high speed means you can capture images in darker conditions using faster shutter speeds and lower ISO sensitivity.
1:1 Reproduction Ratio
With this lens' 1:1 reproduction ratio, your camera can produce life-size images of your subjects.
For DT Alpha & Minolta DSLRs
Optimized for Sony DT Alpha cameras, this lens is recommended for use only with smaller cropped APS-C cameras.
Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM)
Designed for fast, smooth and silent automatic focusing, Sony's unique Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) technology achieves high torque at low speed with rapid start/stop response. The AF control signals from the camera body are sent to the lens-mounted SAM unit, which drives the lens directly, helping to assure quick and accurate AF response.
Minimum Focus Distance: 4.8"
Get mere inches away from your subject and still capture tack-sharp images. This macro lens can focus its elements when held just 4.8" away from your subject - giving your images a much greater level of detail.
7x Circular Aperture Blades
Circular aperture blades produce smooth, rounded bokeh background effects when capturing spot-light sources in your pictures. Because the aperture blades form a near circle at the wide openings used for low-light shots, spot-light sources have a pleasing circular defocused effect.
Filter Diameter: 49mm
The 49mm front filter thread does not rotate, allowing rotating polarizing filters to be used.

Very good quality but for a 2.8 lens, it's dark. I had 3 lights on a macro object and open at 2.8 but it just seem as if it was not getting any light.Compared to the 50mm and 100mm, this lens is just plain dark. Built quality is cheap as it is [*]. Also, it is 30mm so you really have to get close to the object to get a 1:1 ratio.

Comments about Sony 30mm f/2.8 DT Alpha A-Mount Macro Prime Lens:

The pictures are sharp once you get the hang of the back and forth focusing , better to use manual focus if your eyesight is good. This is a very good lens to just step into macro photography. So when you put down those big dollars you will not have to waste time learning your limits and have more fun shooting.

I was all set to purchase just this lens when I fell in love with the camera body it was on and my hubby bought it for me too. I have had a blast taking up close shots with this lens. It is perfect for the amateur photographer to really get a feel for what you can do with up close shots. Use it with manual focus to really add interest to your pictures!

This is a small and handy lens primarily for use as a close-up macro lens. It is reasonably fast focussing and certainly does a good job on sharpness. I agree with other reviewers that it is primarily for stationary close-ups. For its cost it is a good investment.

Comments about Sony 30mm f/2.8 DT Alpha A-Mount Macro Prime Lens:

I bought this lens in December together with my Sony SLT-A65 digital camera-wonder... Sony had a special Holiday's promotion and the price I paid for it at B&H was just unbelievably low... In olden days during the Analog Era, I paid double the price for macro lenses of similar optical quality... It's a Macro lens that allows me to get very close, very close to the subject if need be... However, I can also use it as a prime lens for general photography because those 30mm in focal length are equivalent to 45mm of focal length if I were using a classic 35mm camera... The auto-focus is fast, accurate and smooth; it is small and light adding only about 5oz to my camera; the glass is of very good quality and f/2.8 gives me brighter image from the moment I'm focusing and composing through the EVF or LCD of my camera until the final moment when I shoot... I shoot RAW and am very pleased with quality of the images I get from this lens.

Comments about Sony 30mm f/2.8 DT Alpha A-Mount Macro Prime Lens:

This lens is great for any Sony Alpha user. I've had my Alpha 350 for over 5 years now - and this Sony Macro lens is a perfect addition, for those of us who are 'just fine' with a small-chip camera.

The ability (on the lens itself) to switch from AF to MF is a huge help. I can get right on top of my subject, with AF - then switch to MF to capture great shots.

I've only had the lens a few weeks; but thus far I've found it to be easy to use - and a joy to shoot with. While I've given thought to moving up to a full-size sensor and a larger DSLR - I think my Sony Alpha - and the accessories I've gotten over the years (Sony HVL-F42AM wireless flash; Sony SAL 75-300 zoom lens; and now this new Macro) will continue as my primary photographic gear.

As a hobbyist - and someone who just enjoys photography - but isn't a professional, I find the Alpha product line to be very good - and durable. To date, I've taken over 75,000 photos with my Alpha. With my new Macro lens, I intend to add some up-close-macro shots that I've previously been unable to get.

Everything with my B&H order went flawlessly - and the lens arrived very quickly. I've been a B&H user for over 17 years - sometimes with as much as 5 years between orders - yet they continue to be my number 1 supplier for both video and photographic equipment.

We purchased this macro lens for our daughter who is a beginner photographer using a Sony Alpha. She has taken some great photos with the lens that she wasn't able to with the lens that came with the camera as the standard lens would constantly try and focus on the object close up. The macro lens provides great up close photos while providing great clarity and crispness of the object i.e. flower, insect etc... Great affordable beginner lens for her to practice with.
