The Westcott Recessed Mega JS Apollo (50 x 50") is a softbox based on an umbrella frame. It needs no speed ring to attach it to a studio flash head. Simply open it, and slide the shaft into the umbrella receptor on the flash head. You can also use the Mega JS Apollo with your on-camera flash by purchasing Westcott's 5015 Shoe Mount Bracket (BH# WESMMA).

Perfect Paired
The convenience of an umbrella meets the control of a softbox. Built on an umbrella frame, the Apollo light modifiers set up in seconds.
Perfect on Location.
No additional parts and pieces to lug around as these units simply open up just like an umbrella and set up in seconds making them perfect for any on-location photographer.
No Adapter Ring Required.
Most softboxes require expensive and heavy adapter rings to properly set up. Built on an umbrella frame, these units simply pop open like an umbrella and fit into the umbrella receptacle found on virtually all style "studio" lights.
Perfectly Paired with Speedlites
The Apollo light modifier is a perfect pair with speedlites offering soft box control with the set up ease of an umbrella. An optional 5015 Shoe Mount bracket is required to mount the speedlite and Apollo onto a light stand with full tilting capability.
104 Degree Light Spread
The larger the light source, the softer the light. That is certainly the case with this extra large 50" JS Apollo. Perfect for portraits and couples, this unit also offers a recessed edge allow better control of light.
Pure Color
Fabrics are pure in color so the color temperature going into the fabric is the same color temperature coming back out.
Recessed Edge.
The large recessed edge provides even greater light control allowing feathering of light to see exactly where the light is starting and stopping.

I use the 50" Apollo regularly for location shooting with a studio strobe but have used it with my speedlights on occasion.

    Likes:
    1) Collapses like an umbrella so it travels easy and sets up super quick.

    2) You can use this with any kind of light: strobes, power packs, speedlights, etc.

    2) Provides great light. The price is right for what it is.

    Dislikes:
    1) Should come with at least a cardboard tube for storage. You'll need to find one- try a mailing store- otherwise you're going to break it if you travel with it.

    2) If you use it hard (set up and tear down daily) the zippers will eventually blow. You can keep using it but I'm just sayin'. Wish it were a little more rugged but for the price I'm not complaining. If you keep it set up in your studio it will last forever.

    3) There is very little ability to tilt the box up or down. 95% of the time I use it on a boom or with an assistant had holding it on a pole- both of which work fine.

NOTE: You should understand that you need to tear away the velcro front of the box to adjust the power of your light. Don't freak out. You'll get really fast at this after a while. While it is a bit of a pain that's the trade off you make to get a softbox you can use with any kind of light. (strobe, speedlight, flor, etc.)

You'll also need a cold-shoe fitting for a light stand to hold your strobe. They cost around $15.

Overall a highly versatile piece of gear for the price. Treat it gentle and work with its quirks and you'll be digging it.

Good but there are some limitations

I bought this for speedlight portraits on location. The size of this softbox attracted me so I could light more than headshots like my smaller modifiers.

The real killer for me is the very limited down-angle you have with this softbox. It is fine if you want to fire parallel to the ground or even slightly upward. The tripod enters the box through a zippered opening on the bottom side. The downward angle is limited to the tripod hitting the end of the zipper. This is a problem if you care about catchlight location in the subject's eye.

It is constructed well, opens like and umbrella and easy to put up and take down. Too bad there is no case available because this is not a cheap tool. I contacted Westcott about purchasing a cover or carrier and they told me to purchase a shipping tube.

Light quality seems o.k. after a few sessions. I am not disappointed or thrilled but I am still experimenting with power and placement.

Comments about Westcott Recessed Mega JS Apollo (50 x 50"):

Very, very quick to set up, there is a 4-way zippered section on the bottom of the softbox, large enough for studio strobes, through which you can insert a light stand. You will need to line up the shortened stem with the center piece through which it extends, but there's really nothing to that. The stem is tapered, so you can only put it so far into an umbrella holder. I found that with a standard cold shoe bracket with an umbrella holder, mounted on a light stand, there was no way to tilt the softbox downward, as the stand was at the foremost edge of the zippered area. On a boom arm that would be possible. I like the size, and the deep recess, which will make feathering the light very easy. The material reminded me of the type of nylon used to make raincoats. It looks durable, and I can't wait to do more than a few test shots with this modifier. I bought this to use with both speedlights and studio strobes, and it will easily accept my Elinchrom RX-4 D-Lite strobes. My only possible complaint might be that it did not come with a grid, but that's a minor issue. This modifier also weighs less than my 7' parabolic umbrella from Impact, and about the same as my 5' Impact umbrella.

    Really huge for home studio

Comments about Westcott Recessed Mega JS Apollo (50 x 50"):

I know many reviews say that this thing is huge but until you open it in your own living room you really don't know how huge it is. Having said that the light is great and it's a wonderful soft box. Keep in mind that this is one softbox box that you don't want to use cheap stands with. The material really is kind of cheap and flimsy

The good:Creates a beautiful, soft light. Fits through the AB umbrella portion. Good feathering. Nice size. Easy to set up. Easy to tear down. The bad:For the $ this is SUPER flimsy, and doesn't come with a carrying case or even a simple drawstring storage bag (guess Westcott is being extra stingy). For the $ a bag should be included. It is not NEARLY as nice of quality as the Paul C Buff modifiers... but it was the size I needed. The "umbrella" portion (the frame of the box) of the soft box is plastic which means it isn't nearly as durable as my Paul C Buff, which is made from metal.

Comments about Westcott Recessed Mega JS Apollo (50 x 50"):

A couple things set this softbox apart. First, it's bloody huge, yet deeply recessed enough to have some direction. The light's as soft as a comparably-sized umbrella, but it provides considerably more control. Let me reiterate; this this is huge. I can curl up inside it, and I'm 6'4". Second, it's remarkably small when stored. Somewhat bulkier than a folded umbrella, but much more compact than a collapsible rigid-panel softbox. It does not get a 5-star rating for two reasons; first, I can't vouch for its durability yet. Second, the umbrella shaft tapers from 8mm to 10mm halfway up its length, so I can't place most strobes as far into it as I'd like. Still beautiful light, but the shaft's larger portion is a bit of a pain. On the upside, this is compatible with strobes and brackets using 10mm shafts (none of which I own). Overall, this is my new go-to for soft light. Looks like large-window light, but with added control and portability. Excellent, as long as you have the flash power to fill it.

Smooth operation and the light quality the Apollo produces is quite beautiful. Plus the recessed frame allows me to feather the light very well on my subject.

Using a speed light or mono block this is my go to lighting modifier. Setups in seconds and light is always perfect. I shoot portraits, product photography, and more with this amazing product. Even though this lighting modifier is large, it can still be placed into smaller space than you might expect. Simply collapse it down to fit through doorways. Sets up quickly just like and umbrella with no need for speed rings.

Great light, very natural looking, but it is huge! I have used it at another studio but had forgotten how big it is!

I can't fathom how great this is. I use my canon Speedlight with it, and it works wonders! I don't have any complicated photography terms to accompany my review, it's just.... AWESOME

I absolutely LOVE this! I have a small space and this is all I need. I only shoot littles due to limited space so it's perfect.

Good softbox for the money. Could use a better quality diffuser though.
