The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM Zoom For Nikon D-SLRs is a lens dedicated to digital SLR cameras with APS-C size image sensors offering a large apertureand Sigma's Optical Stabilization and provides a high level of optical performance. The large aperture of f/2.8 makes capturing exceptional photos in low light achievable, and the wide angle is well suited for indoor photography. It offers superior peripheral brightness as well as a compact and lightweight construction. Two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements and three Aspherical lenses provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting. Designed with inner focusing and inner zooming systems, high image quality is assured throughout the entire zoom range. This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 11.8 inches (30cm) throughout the entire zoom range and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.1. The incorporation of HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) is capable of autofocusing with all Nikon D-SLR cameras.

Note! Vignetting will occur if the lens is used with digital cameras with image sensors larger than APS-C size or 35mm SLR cameras. For Pentax mount, if the camera body does not support HSM, auto focus will not be available.

Optical Image Stabilization
Sigma's anti-shake function makes capturing exceptional photos in under most lighting situations achievable.
HSM Autofocusing
The incorporation of HSM is capable of autofocusing with all Nikon D-SLR cameras.
Inner Focus System
An inner focusing system eliminates front lens rotation, making the lens particularly suitable for using the petal-type lens hood (supplied) plus circular polarizing filters.
Excellent optical design
Special Low Dispersion (SLD) and Extraordinary Low Dispersion (ELD) glass elements provide excellent correction of color aberrations. This lens produces an exceptional level of optical performance.
Reduced Ghosting and Flare
The super multi-layer lens coating reduces flare and ghost. High image quality is assured throughout the entire zoom range.
Ideal For Portraits and Snaps
With a minimum focusing distance of 7.9", and a maximum magnification of 1:3, this large aperture standard zoom lens, with close-up ability, is ideal for portrait and snap shots.
Compact and Lightweight Lens
Its design incorporates both glass-mold and hybrid aspherical lens technology which offers a compact and lightweight construction.

Bought this lens for my Nikon D200. Needing a 50mm format. Nikon has one that's a 18-50MM F3.5-5.6 AF NIKON. But bought one and was not to impress with the workmanship. It feels cheap.
I had a 18-200mm Sigma DC that I was please with. So I went and bought this lens.
After receiving the lens from B&H. I inspect it and the quality was good. Feels good too. Has a switch for off on for AF and has an another off and on switch for the OS stabalization.
I usually leave the switch on at all times. So when I take a shot. Don't have to remember to switch it on or off.
The result I get is pretty impressive. I used it and get great result without using the built in flash.
I'm not a professional photographer, but I'm noticing I'm having more keepers that I would otherwise delete.
The stabilization works I guess. I used guess coz I still get some shaky result with some of my pictures not allot but I do get some. Why I gave it a 4 Star should be a 4 1/2 star but don't have that to check. If your comparing this with the Nikon 18-50mm. I'd buy the Sigma. Don't take my word check it out yourself.

I bought this lens for my Nikon D80 prior to a fall trip to the north shore of Lake Superior. The build quality is the best I have seen on a lens in this price range and while a bit heavy, it feels solid and well constructed. I found the range of the focal length to be easy to work with and I rarely found myself changing lenses while walking around with it. The image stabilization feature seemed unobtrusive, I had no real indication that it was helping or not though it 'felt' like it was working as more shots taken in questionable low-light situations seemed to turn out better than I had expected them to.

Unfortunately, the images produced by this lens cannot compare to my Nikon 50mm 1.8 (non-DX) and 35mm 1.8 (DX) primes - both of which are very inexpensive lenses of seemingly lesser build quality than the Sigma. The chromatic aberration can be distracting at times, especially in low-light images with a bright full-spectrum light source (specifically, the moon on a clear night). The images are not as crisp as I had hoped and seem to be rather lifeless at times, especially compared to images from my cheap 35mm and 50mm primes.

That said, this is a very useful lens for walking around with. I find it quite versatile and feel that it serves as an affordable wide-angle for DX-sensor camera bodies like mine.

Very Nice! I bought as a substitute to my Nikkor 18-55mm kit lens.
The Sigma 18-50mm is sharp and well constructed. For today use is awesome and for footage is also very good. The AF system is quite precise and quiet.
It's working just perfect with my Nikon D5100.

Comments about Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM Zoom For Nikon D-SLRs:

I have a hand me down Nikon D100 and needed an affordable lens for up close photography and general pictures. I decided to go with the Sigma lens because it was compatible and seemed to have a better feel and options than Nikon's version. Not to mention the staff was great at B&H and let me test out both before I made a decision. Wouldn't have done it differently.

As some other reviews also metion it does have a noticable sound but was not objectionable for the way I use it.

I only received this lens a 1 1/2 weeks ago and haven't had much chance to use it but when I have used it, it's been great! love that this is a 2.8 on the wider end instead of the 3.5 of a kit lens. I have to admit that I wasn't so sure about this lens though because of the fact that it wasn't a Nikkor (this was my first non-Nikkor purchase) but I can't wait to get out and use it.

Solid lens, does not feel cheap.
great for out doors. have used indoors a little and does a great job when the lighting is not great. Bought this for shooting the sky at night and it beat my expectations. Use it with a D7000. Auto focus is fairly fast and spot on. When using manual focus I have a little trouble telling exactly where my focus is at when shooting stuff up close, not sure if it is me, camera or lens.

I shoot a lot of local band shows. This lens is perfect for the low lighting and faced paced movement of the bands. Great product.

This is the first wide angle I have owned. I thought perhaps I would be disappointed considering I've rented some super fast lenses, but considering the price, this one performs nicely. I've only played with it briefly for an upcoming trip to Death Valley and I enjoy it so far. I'll see how it goes in the field!

Great lens, perfect for close-up situations. As a photographer for a university, it is key that I have different types of lenses, and this is a wonderful grab-and-go lens. Super easy to change, very lightweight, but still built well. The only issue I have is the poor low-light pictures. Easily editable with software like photoshop, but not great for lesser editing capabilities.

I'm new to photography. I was looking for a lens with a wider angle than the one sold with my camera and this lens fit the bill. I've used it several times already and am totally happy with it.The price was great and it shipped right on time. Another great purchase I've made from B&H. Thank You!!
