I use this with a speedlight and it does a good job. I use the arm extension made for attaching a studio strobe and an umbrella adapter. The box then zips shut around the speedlight and the speedlight controls remain exposed. With the umbrella adapter, I can tilt the diffuser of the box from vertical to near horizontal. Two minor flaws. When the diffuser is vertical, the back of the speedlight is facing down so the controls are hard to access. (The first pic shows the light control; the diffuser is facing down in this case) The hex nuts on the extender rod are hard to deal with; I changed one of them out to be a finger knob (see pic). The blue tape in the pics are my marks where to set the rods.

I thought this product was going to be ready to use, however the instructions are not clear how this mounts to the flash.
I had to purchase a Impact Umbrella Bracket with Swivel Mount to make it work.

The rod it comes with is not comfortable to handhold and cannot be mounted to a stand. I recommend purchasing a tripod for it.

The color value is excellent and is a very portable unit.

Comments about Westcott Apollo Mono Softbox with Recessed Front for Flash:

This collapsible softbox is quite versatile, all things considered: one can use either a dedicated speedlite (or speedlight, depending on your flavor), or a monolight with the Apollo. The only difference between the 2 models (#s 2334, & 2335) being a mounting rod included with the 2335, "for larger-sized light heads"--which, for the life of me, I still can't figure out how to use, to 1) get my White Lightning mono to fit inside the box, & 2} get the assembly to look anything remotely like the photos on the box/website/anywhere else, where the dials are poking out the back, using said rod...) Caveat: does one really want their light shooting straight up inside a softbox? seems counter-productive aimed that way, if you ask me... My main concern is to get my light inside--in as timely a fashion as possible--and having it pointed straight out, not redirected in some other configuration, so i can benefit from full flash. With much finagling, it can be done--just not super quick. but it can be done. I myself could not personally have the back-end poking out for easy access to my dials, by either using or not using that rod (but i've only just started using this thing). No problem for me: Unzip, change settings, re-zip, done. Not a power shooter on a tight schedule...so...not an issue for me. Speedlight/lite? No problems whatsoever. Works like a charm! Beautifully, actually! And I would definitely recommend the optional shoe-mount umbrella bracket, too. Just an all-around quality accessory. Nice, beautiful, soft, wraparound light, which can be changed by removing the front diffusion panel. Lightweight, compact, folds like a regular umbrella, very transportable, build quality is up to Wescott standards. Aside from my strobe issue, this is definitely a tool to have in your mobile arsenal! Yes, would recommend definitely!

I have only used it once so far. It was easy to set up. No nasty fiberglass poles to fight with.
It did a great jon on the on location portraiture I was doing in a confined office space.
I will be getting a lot of use out of it.
              Great design.

Comments about Westcott Apollo Mono Softbox with Recessed Front for Flash:

I used softbox for an outdoor portrait assignment in downtown Pittsburgh at 10 different locations over a four hour period. My assistant handheld the softbox to minimize take down and set up times and to eliminate carrying around a light stand. Yeah, we noticed an odd look or two from passersby. But the photos looked great thanks to the softbox.

I like just about everything about the softbox.

There are only two minor drawbacks:

              • the directions are easy to understand and the photos are fuzzy.
              • since the light fits inside the softbox, you need to unzip the panel where the strobe fits in or remove the front. Neither is difficult. But it does take a few moments.

By the way, I used it with a Canon 580EXII and was more than happy with the results.

This softbox produces a nice even light when I use my AB800 light. Being it is a umbrella based system it is a little hard to setup with the studio strobe. The good part is I can reach in from the bottom zippers and adjust the settings on the light rather than keep opening the velcro front panel.

I've found this Softbox really quick to set-up due to the fact it's built like an Umbrella. The Lighting is soft and even. It requires that you open the front to adjust power of Strobes so that can get annoying, best get the Power Setting dead on when you first put it up. I'd recommend this product to Photographers who already have Pocket Wizards or some other Radio Transmitter as this is a requirement with this product. ie There is no "line of sight" for Infra-Red Tranmitter/Receiver.

I was surprised to find out how nicely the softbox is constructed. If you are trying a Strobist set up, I would definitely recommend this sofbox. With a good strong flash, I was able to hit f16 at 3 meters. That is much better than I expected given the size of the box. The only con is that you really have to work to adjust a flash if it needs to be set manually.

I bought this so I could use it with studio lights in the future; Now I am using it with speedlights. It sets up easily, like an umbrella - but provides more control of the light. It can easily light two or three people, at least from the waist up -- I haven't tried it full length. The only difficulty is that you have to pull the front open to change the settings on your flash. Otherwise this is an excellent option for on-location lighting.

To the person how give this bad feedback and call yourself pro. You dont understand much. Sure you have to have a umbrealla stand adapter, but this softbox is very easy to setup, and you dont need speedrings. So learn something before you give something bad feedback.

This is the best softbox for location shoot ever. It is very portable, and give great light.

I use this softbox to take outdoor and indoor portraits on location portraits. It is very portable, easy to set up, and gives me great results. The one thing I don't like about it is its inability to tilt the softbox downward.

I like this softbox a lot, for the most part. It has a smart zipper system for access and does a great job at diffusing light. The only thing I would say is slightly inconsiderate is that the umbrella hardware is rather bare/raw and can give you a nasty cut.
