Ok, I've been provding professional video services for 9 yrs. I bought the sony HDR HD-1000 (shoulder mount)video camera, so I needed to upgrade my tripod to support the weight. What CAN I SAY...I looked and looked...and after too many reviews, I settled on this deal. AND LET ME TELL YOU, It is just that...A DEAL. When got it & opened the box, it was instant happiness (It wasn't a case of "you get what you pay for" or junk). The tripod is eye candy (looks professional & like you paid twice as much). It's sturdy, sets up easy & quickly. Even without reading any instructions I was able to grab my camera, load it, and started putting it to the test. Motions are smooth, as fluid heads should be, even at max extention. Does eveything you want a tripod to do; WELL. OH YEA, the dolly, nobody talks about the dolly...simply put, it is ice cream to a chocolate brownie. The tripod case is a nice assessory also. The only con is the head has 5 to 8mm play in the side to side motion. But its not a big deal because it smoothly moves past it (besides the one you get might not have it). Also, adjusting the handles might be aggravating depending on your level of expertise (some screws just seem like am I really suppose to turn this that way). [...] Woooahh, I hope this was helpful.

I bought this tripod for use with my hvx200 and this is a nice tripod but very stiff. I would prefer to not have to loosen screws just to get this to work properly for me. Since it does what I need it to do I can deal with it. The free dolly works really good, better than I expected actually. Since it locks properly I don't have to worry about going back and forth removing the dolly, and putting it back on.

The bag is flimsy, so I'd recommend getting another one - had a clip snap while it was over my shoulder, and it's oddly balanced anyway. But with that out of the way - this is a pretty solid tripod, especially for the price. No drag control, but it is a pretty good "happy medium" when unlocked. Big tilt-lock handle, which is nice. Overall, I like it for the price. I would like to see a smaller camera plate, though - this one, when placed "properly," blocks battery access on some cameras. No big deal when using it while powered, but a minor annoyance.

Comments about Davis & Sanford PROVISTA18 ProVista Tripod with FM18 Head:

Did other reviews say it's heavy? Because it is. Also, youtube reviewers warned that it's not as smooth tilting up and down, and that's true, but it's just barely noticeable. If you have OCD, avoid this product. Some of the handles run into each other, like when I pan I occasionally hit the metal arm that raises and lowers the middle pole. So there are some design flaws. But I'm giving it a generous number of stars because it's a HUGE improvement from my $20 tripod, and it looks very professional. Just, so so heavy. My little Canon Vixia camcorder looks a little dumb on top. But It'll support heavier accessories, which is good because I plan to add more in the future.

I also own the Davis & Sanford 75mm ProVista Tripod and W3 Dolly. The Davis & Sanford Tripods are very sturdy and professional looking. They absolutely perform flawlessly time and time again. The adjustable dual control arms allow custom placement for operational comfort. The price point on the tripod makes it a very affordable piece of equipment and the construction and design allows for long usability.

Compared to the $ tripod I was using this is a real "Pro" upgrade. So far the only thing I noticed was that the 360 axis has about a 1/2" "Free Spot" with no tension when you first start to pan left or right, other than that tripod does what it claims. I really like the 78" height as I film a lot of live bands and it really gets up over people's heads in front of you.

We are a social meadia management company. We do all kinds of video work. We are just getting started but already have been called on to do a variety of different types of shoots, from a music style video to a couple of commercials for an wholesale appliance company to some interviews. This tripod has functioned superbly in each of these different types of shoots. It is sturdy, well made. I watched quite a few reviews about this tripod and the only negative comments I heard about this tripod is how some of the tightening mechanisms ratchet and their location. I understood what the reviews were talking about but seriously it is all a non-issue. In the price range this is a great tripod. The first video we did was on a barrowed "man on the street" tripod. Compared to this tripod, well... there is no comparison. I have never used an expensive tripod and they maybe better but for what I do this is a great tripod.

This tripod is sturdy and big enough to house mid- large size camcorders and pretty much all DSLRs! The pan head on this tripod moves so smoothly. A couple minor things that are unfortunate though; The plate holds the camera just fine. I just wish it was easier to access the camera faster as needed. Also no matter what I do I cannot get the camera to stay in one spot when I'm not holding it. It eventually starts hanging down or hanging up. If it weren't tight on the plate it would fall right off and I would not be a happy camper. But other than that this is definitely worth the price!!

I'm an amateur and this is my first serious tripod. I love it. It is solid as a rock. I mainly went to this model because of the height. I will use it for star gazing with a pair of 11x80 binoculars I have had for 30 years. I will probably have to mount it so the handles are on the objective lens side. They will get in the way otherwise. It will be nice to not have to crouch. I found the tilt and pan controls very smooth with no tipping with a T3i on it. Yes the tilt is a little stiffer than the pan but if moving in both directions simultaneously, it is not noticeable to me. I also like that the center elevation gear will not crash down like the cheaper tripods I have had. I can't even get it to move with some downward pressure. I thought there was some play from side to side but it was due to the center mast lock being loose. Once tightened, it disappeared. For this price point, I don't know how you can beat it.

Buy this tripod if you need a tall one. I bought this with the W3 Dolly. Everything is well built. My first tripod is the Magnus VT-4000 which is a good all around tripod. For my second camera position, I wanted something that would be taller if I needed to shoot over the heads at an event. The PROVISTA18 is larger and heavier, but way high. If I mount it on the W3 Dolly, the camera plate goes all the way up to 7'3"!

The Tripod is much more durable than what I thought it was going to be. I'm really happy with the weight, the dolly, and the smooth feel.

I've had this tripod (and dolly) for one week. We haven't used it much, but I am very please with the quality of the product. Weight is always an issue with tripods - because you don't want it to tip over at the slightest touch. This tripod has some weight to it and gives me peace of mind as an educator in student media.

Comments about Davis & Sanford PROVISTA18 ProVista Tripod with FM18 Head:

I have a 10 Lb. Sony AX2000. I got this tripod to replace my 5 year old one. The description says the tripod is for cameras of all sizes UP TO 18 pounds. Upon first test I found the tripod to be way too stiff in pan and tilt. I had to hold the tripod still with my free hand or leg or it would tip/turn due to this. Contacting the manufacturer the said that is because the FM18 head is for 18 pound cameras and would have to be repacked with grease to work properly with my camera. They will do it free of charge but I had to pay shipping. The shipping had to be UPS and costs over $30. This should be advertised for cameras of 30 Lb. so others do not get in this situation.

For a backup tripod this guy will get the job done. Straight out of the box it is a little stiff and takes some adjusting, but it holds the camera level. The tripod does pan or tilt smooth at all, and the arms and adjustments are cumbersome, but for the price you get what you get.

It's solidly built, smooth pan and tilt, it could be a little taller when fully extended, but you simply can't do better at this price.
