Sony AC-PW10AM AC Adapter Kit for Sony Alpha SLR Digital Cameras
The Sony AC-PW10AM AC Adapter is designed to supply uninterrupted power for your camera while downloading pictures to your computer, for extended work in a studio, or while viewing images when connected to your TV or VCR.
The adapter does not charge the battery.
It is compatible with all Sony Alpha digital SLR cameras.

Maybe this isn't quite what Sony had in mind for it's adapter. I use a 12 volt dc sealed cell battery, plug a 120 volt converter into that, then convert it back into dc with the Sony adapter. I do that for extreme extended battery use for astrophotography field use. It seems to work fine. There's no overheating in any part of my contraption, including the Sony Adapter.

Adapter works as required, but the plug is really large and the EMI ferrite really gets in the way. The EMI ferrite is only clipped on and I will be removing it for use. Cord is long enough. DC plug secures inside the camera nicely. Think Sony could re-design the overmolded plug and make it smaller.

The plug is 180-degrees off making the chord go up instead of letting it hang straight down the side. Connecting in this way puts the chord in the way of the controls on the right side and makes changing settings a hassle - besides increasing the chances of the chord being pulled from the camera socket - even when on the tripod.
Best - only - advantage is that the charger saves battery changes and is an advantage in the studio where power is used for longer periods during set-ups and shooting.
Someone in charge needs to make a decision and change the orientation of the plug going into the camera.

I bought this because I currently live abroad. But before it arrived I used a transformer (had no choice, needed to charge the battery!) and nothing went wrong with the battery pack... which makes me wonder if this product is REALLY necessary or if Sony just wants to make an extra [$] off of us so writes in the manual "using an electronic transformer may cause damage."
