I use this HardDrive in Raid-0 configuration, as a full 4TB unit, instead of 2X2TB mirrored one. I like it because it doesn't require a cooling fan, quiet and very fast with the eSATA connection. I can confirm an average of about 5-6X faster transfer rates compared to standard USB-2 transfers. The unit has a power-saving mode, so it shuts down when not in use after a while.

There are, however, some things I don't like.
    - First, it is big! I mean, really bulky! They should have made it a little bit more compact.
    - It is not suitable for slow downloads, like when you try to download large amount of files from the web or an FTP site for days at a time. It keeps clicking every time a small portion of data comes down. It just gives you that uneasy, "let's not even do this" feeling...
    - The power switch wouldn't turn off the unit when plugged in. I don't get that why? When unplugged, it shuts down anyways, but when I try to shut it down with the power button, it doesn't do anything. I've checked it on both of my units (identical 4TB ones), but it was the same with both.
    - If you are a PC user like me, don't even try to "full format" this drive, because it would take at least 4-5 days if not more! Instead, just do a "quick format" and in a few minutes it will be done and ready to go. By the way, the quick format is also recommended by the manufacturer for PC users.

These are, however, no major issues. My laptop unfortunately doesn't have eSATA connections, but with a dual-head eSATA express card this problem was solved easily and inexpensively. So far everything is good with the unit, and since I don't use it as an "active drive", like video editing and stuff, only as a primary backup unit, mostly it just sits on the table and is used maybe once a week to transfer all new data onto it. If that's how you want to use it, I would most definitely recommend it, especially, if you need a ton of space for your HiDef videos, high resolution photo libraries and other large files.

I am using the My Book as an archive drive, configured as RAID 1, and connected to my iMac over Firewire 800. No problems with the hardware so far. Performance and features are as expected, the drives are quiet, configuration was quick and easy, and the price is good. But the Drive Manager software for Mac OS X provided by WD crashed once. After the crash I found that My Book was turned off. A quick search showed that other users already complained time ago for the very same software issue and symptoms (same crash dump data), yet WD did not fix the problem yet. I am monitoring for future crashes, and if any I'll simply disable starting the WD software at logon, and live without any health and temperature indication...

Comments about WD 4TB My Book Studio Edition II Quad Interface External Hard Drive:

I have always been a fan of WD products- and this experience solidified my loyalty to this brand. I dropped this hard drive 3& 1/2 feet when I tripped over the cord and it fell from the dining room table to the floor :( The casing on the outside of the drive smashed and I thought worst case scenario all the info would be gone- at best that I would have to replace a drive- Luckily, I was using the RAID capacity. But it was even better-NO information was lost and it worked fine! What a durable machine! I would highly recommend it!

Something that Lacie and GTech do not. Replaced a hastily bought Lacie 4 Big 16TB (Raid 1) with a daisy chain of My Book Studio II's (Raid 1), saved $100, life is suddenly less stressful. I'm going outside to buy $100 in swedish fish now.

Comments about WD 4TB My Book Studio Edition II Quad Interface External Hard Drive:

This is my 3rd My Book Studio external hard drive and I'm very pleased with it. It backs up consistently in the background and I hardly ever have to pay attention to it. Once I fill up the disk I separate them and send one to friend so I have 1 disk safely off premises. (I backup mirrored). I use a toaster to access the ones I keep at my studio if I need any old files or pictures. I wish it was easier to buy just the disks separate instead of the entire case every time but it's not a deal breaker.

This HD works well and is very fast with the SATA connection. I gave it three stars because it was a lot harder to make it compatible with a PC than is stated. I'm not real tech savvy, but I do know more than the average person about computers. I'm using it with Windows 7.

Comments about WD 4TB My Book Studio Edition II Quad Interface External Hard Drive:

Update:I had written a prior review also under WestCoast after the first day I had the drive. I later saw additional Event ID 11 errors in my system log, which prompted me to look at the other interfaces the drive has. WD support suggested trying the FireWire 800 interface as a possible solution. Given that my PC had neither FireWire nor USB 3 installed, it made sense to me to update to USB 3, which is capable of faster speeds and skip FireWire altogether. So I installed a USB 3 PCIe card and purchased an eSATA to USB 3 adapter + cable. After which I am pleased to report no Event ID 11 errors over the last two days with numerous tests using eSATA (with copies from PC to WD, and WD to a Passport Ultra drive).I am seeing excellent performance with large file copies exceeding 120 MB/s between my PC and the Studio II using the eSATA interface to USB 3 (easily more than 3X faster than USB 2). If you have unused SATA ports on your mother board, you can always just buy a connector that mounts in an unused slot and plug that into one of your internal SATA ports. They sell cables that go from SATA to eSATA and that would be the cheapest approach. You can do multiple copies and still get good speed and set NTFS permissions, something that the home office NAS drives won't let you do. Since eSATA and USB 3 are capable of greater speeds than FireWire, this really is the way to go; especially if you have other portable drives that support USB 3.

Comments about WD 4TB My Book Studio Edition II Quad Interface External Hard Drive:

The USB drive works as advertised. I recommend that you down load the latest firmware and WD Windows drivers if you're a PC user. The power button on mine works if you hold it in for about 5 seconds, it will then shut the drive off. I dislike that the drive will come on when the PC is boots without touching the power button if left plugged in. Also I found that if I turn the drive on after I am in Windows it throws an event ID 11 error. Apparently when the drive starts up, it flags a controller error initially that triggers the system log. My Maxtor drive did not do this and it was also dual drives running RAID 1 for redundancy like the WD Studio II.

WD on line support had no solution for the error; it does this on both of my Windows 7 PC's that run perfectly with the latest driver and WD firmware. My work around is that if I turn the drive on before I boot my PC, then no USB disk controller errors are reported because the drive is online and working. You can do multiple copies with good speed and set NTFS permissions, something that the home office NAS drives won't let you do, they just have limited share permissions. Also if you go into device manager, you can set the disk to performance mode or easy remove, both modes work Ok. I added a power strip with its own on / off switch between the power supply and my UPS. The exterior case is cheap plastic, but the drives seem to be good.

I'm blown away by the quality and speed of this drive, so quiet, so efficient it's the best value in a 4TB external firewire 800 drive you're going to find anywhere and my file processing has been taken to a whole new level!!

Comments about WD 4TB My Book Studio Edition II Quad Interface External Hard Drive:

We owned several of Studio II. The one I just bought was for backup of backups of business data. Most of times, it is powered off.

I didn't install any software from the CD came with the Studio II. I only used the CD for my PC to recognize the external hard drives and update the WD's manager.

It was easy to configure hard drives to RAID 1. I used ROBOCOPY to copy data from another external hard drive to the new Studio II. The copying process was relatively slow. That was my complain.

The product itself worked well until one of the drives failed after one month of use. Called to return the product to Western Digital and the initial interaction was great. They said the drive would be here Monday. Monday came and went the drive never showed. Bottom line they didn't have a replacement drive or an upgrade to send me. After empty promises and management failing to return my calls, a week & a half later, they're finally sending a refund which will arrive in 3-4 weeks! Total FAIL on Western Digitals part. I do not trust them or their product. Find a different brand for an external drive if you can and some decent customer service.
LOVE B & H! I know it's not their fault but they need to know that Western Digital makes empty promises, does not follow through, and bottom line, CAN NOT be trusted!

Comments about WD 4TB My Book Studio Edition II Quad Interface External Hard Drive:

At ~$0.00006 per megabyte it would be difficult to find cheaper external storage from a well-known manufacturer, and with a 3 year warranty. Quad interface? USB + Firewire 800 (1394b) + eSATA = 3, so that's BS. It works fine with the USB connection, the slowest option. I'd hoped to use the Firewire capability, but had to abandon this plan because, after trying numerous possible solutions, I could not get it to boot reliably on my HP/Win7 PC. About half the time my PC would stall during boot when connected via Firewire. I haven't tried eSATA, so cannot speak to this feature. Since I plan to use it only for periodic backups the USB limitation is acceptable, if disappointing, but I'd really rather be using the faster Firewire option.

The RAID 1 software does an immediate back-up of all my info on my iMac. If one drive should go bad, it can be replaced easily without tools. It then will automatically copy the new drive. So, essentially this drive can last forever. It matches my iMac beautifully, besides being FAST and functional.

I configured this to RAID 1 so that I can have all my important files in the drive and know that a mirrored copy of the content is ALWAYS there in case one of the drive fails.

Speed is excellent. I have no problem doing non linear editing on the drive.
