I received this lens about three weeks ago. I'm primarily using it for seascape photos, which were severely lacking in width with my other lenses. Although I only tested it on a couple of interior shots, I do intend on using it inside as well. I really like the build quality of this lens and the zoom, of course. I have the 14mm, 20mm and 25mm MFT primaries, and wanted something for below 14mm. This fits the bill perfectly and I find myself using it set at 7mm most often. I was initially undecided whether to get this or the 8mm fisheye, but I'm very happy I got this, as it keeps straight lines straight. For my work, this lens makes much more sense. No regrets.

This lens is well constructed, very wide, and super sharp. I really want to love and use it. But it does not work well with Olympus OM-D E-M5. Out of the 100 random test shoots I did, about 1/3 of them has big and strange purple flare. Note they are so bad that post processing removal is not possible. That combination just did not work.

I wish that this lens accepts filter. That might open ways to work around the purple flare. But it does not. I returned it to B&H.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix G Vario 7-14mm f/4.0 ASPH. Lens - Micro Four Thirds Format:

Amazing wide angle zoom range. This little gem is the most versatile lens for interior and urban architectural photography I've ever owned in 40+ years as an enthusiast photographer. Somewhat pricey, but it is sturdy, fast and a delight to handle - you certainly get what you pay for. After considering the Olympus EM-1 I invested in a full Lumix GX7 system and couldn't be happier with my decision. I also purchased the 12-35mm f/2.8 and the 35-100mm f/2.8 zoom which provides a continuous shooting range of 14-200mm equivalent. I am also considering replacing this lens with the Olympus 12-14mm f/2.8 when it becomes available for the extra brightness in interiors work.

Super sharp lens. 5 stars is for optics. It gets a 4 star otherwise for lack of manual controls.

Lens is on the big side. Lacks aperture ring and focus scale. AF is a little slow in locking with moving targets...but that is AF on many cameras.

Great lens for indoor and close quarters shooting. Found it a bit slow for low light conditions but works great with a tripod. If you are planning to use the long end of the lens a lot I would recommend buying the 14mm f1.2 prime lens instead.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix G Vario 7-14mm f/4.0 ASPH. Lens - Micro Four Thirds Format:

I was very hesitant on spending $1K on this lens, I passed on the Nikon 14-28 for my D800E and I settled for a Tokina 16-28 an enormous chunk of good glass for $7/800 and paying so much for this little lens seemed preposterous also considering that it's F4 not F2.8.
I've to say though that I'm VERY happy, the lens is very sharp, AF is fast, size is actually an advantage with my GH3, it let me have a very compact kit. Since the lens is sharp full open I don't miss too much F2.8 anyway, I normally stop down my F2.8 lenses to F4 or more soI'm OK for my type of photography. If you are hesitant, just buy it, you will not regret it.

Really love this lens except the price. This is the 2nd one I have owned. Was using to take wide angle photos of a parade in a rain storm and it fell out of camera bag, under a bleachers and gone forever. I miossed it enough to purchase another. Best use is for wide angle without the fisheye effect. Effective for use on any MFT camera

I am using it on the bmpcc. It's focal length range is great for the crop factor of the Blackmagic Pocket when on the move. The build is great, given the crop factor the usual foibles of edge effects are less visible across this sensor. It's light enough weight and small enough that the camera and lens together are the "picture" of portability for top quality video. It is also less intimidating in the public.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix G Vario 7-14mm f/4.0 ASPH. Lens - Micro Four Thirds Format:

I debated for some time spending the amount of money this lens costs, but I do like using wide-angle lenses (including fisheyes), and after much research and the viewing of many full-resolution photo samples taken with this lens, I decided to take the plunge and to buy it. For the MFT format, the Panasonic 7-14mm was generally considered to be superior to the other similar lenses available, and the published photos from it and the others supported this conclusion. Unexpectedly, the far corners in the photos taken with the first sample I bought (elsewhere) were soft at all apertures and focal-lengths. The replacement sample was better, but still not up to expectations. While I still had that lens, I also bought one from B&H to
compare with it, with the hope of getting a sample closer in performance level to those I had seen samples from. That didn't happen (this third sample is far from perfect optically), but it is so much fun to use (and *sometimes* its performance is surprisingly good enough to satisfy this "pixel-peeper"...;-) that I decided to keep it and to just enjoy using it. Over most of the frame at around f7.1 the lens is quite sharp, with the far corners sometimes (and unpredictably) lagging noticeably behind in image quality (but local sharpening can generally compensate for this with this sample). I'm generally happy with this lens at this point, and I appreciate its virtues (compactness, light weight, low linear distortion, very good performance, and the very useful range of focal-lengths for me offered by it) more than its vices (the relative corner softness toward its widest end and some visible CA problems at the edges and corners near the middle of its range with some subject matter). Oddly, this super-wide lens appears to perform quite well indoors even at f4. Overall, I can recommend this lens.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix G Vario 7-14mm f/4.0 ASPH. Lens - Micro Four Thirds Format:

This lens is well constructed, very wide, and super sharp. I really want to love and use it. But it does not work well with Olympus OM-D E-M5. Out of the 100 random test shoots I did, about 1/3 of them has big and strange purple flare. Note they are so bad that post processing removal is not possible. That combination just did not work.

I wish that this lens accepts filter. That might open ways to work around the purple flare. But it does not. I returned it to B&H.

I bought this to use for shooting my interior design projects and it works very well. The lens captures the entire room with great detail and clarity, even small rooms like a bathroom. The vertical lines do bend along the sides of the image, but that's to be expected. The lens is relatively fast and the clarity is amazing.

This is one of the finest lenses I have ever owned! I shoot technical rock and ice climbing photos and wide/ultra-wide angles are very important for this type of work. I am not sure I would part with nearly a thousand dollars to own this lens if it was for occasional use but in my case it sees plenty of action. I also use a fish-eye lens which, again, might not be worthwhile for everyone. Many M43 users considering this lens will also look at the Olympus 9-18 zoom. I own several Olympus lenses and I like them very much but in this case the 7-14 Panasonic with its f4 constant aperture, plus the significantly wider angle of view and the exceptional image quality, won out. This lens is larger, heavier and considerably more costly than the Olympus 9-18 but the image quality is astounding.I invested a fair amount of time looking at reviews and comparisons between this lens and the Olympus on the web and from what I can tell they present the choices quite well. What I could not tell was how extraordinary the Panasonic 7-14's image quality would be!Beyond resolution, MTF, bokeh and all the other objective measures, some lenses just manage to render extraordinary images. This is one of those lenses! If you are serious about this focal length range in M43 this lens should be on your short list!

Comments about Panasonic Lumix G Vario 7-14mm f/4.0 ASPH. Lens - Micro Four Thirds Format:

Panasonic does it again with another excellent lens.
At ƒ4, it's not super fast, but not too shabby either. It really completes my GH3 kit and very well takes over from my ageing Canon lenses, which included the 16-35, 24-70 & 70-200mm all of which were L series ƒ2.8. All now gone and replaced with this and the other 2.8 Pana lenses.
I'm not so far missing lugging around the 5D and all these old heavy weight pieces of glass. I'm not missing the ache in my back after shooting for 8 hours at a conference or a wedding. I'm not missing the quality of the Canon lens system, simply because the Panasonic GH3 attached to these new lenses, in my opinion, give me just as saleable images. In fact, I'm confident to say that with the flexibility of the Panasonic system, I'm actually way ahead. After selling off the old system, I even have some spare $ in the bank.

Love this lens, as well as the 12-35 and the 35-100. Brilliant stuff Panasonic, brilliant.

Also love the fact I took the plunge and changed systems after 20 years. No regrets at all.

The video off the GH3 with these lenses is amazing as well as still images.

I use this lens mostly for shooting interior photos. The extreme wide angle is useful when I'm required to shoot small spaces. The lens is very sharp with little or no distortion. Some CA at the edges in high contrast areas, same as all wide angle lenses I've used (e.g. Canon 17-40 f4.0L).

Comments about Panasonic Lumix G Vario 7-14mm f/4.0 ASPH. Lens - Micro Four Thirds Format:

I love using old rangefinder glass on my GH2 but with a 2X crop I need to buy dedicated M43 wide angle and ultra-wide angle lenses. The effective 35 equivalent range of 14-24 covers all of my wide angle shooting needs. Even towards the 24mm range I prefer my 7-14 to the 14-140 kit zoom included with the camera. It also has a constant zoom so you can dramatically zoom and exaggerate perspective while shooting video. There is normal ultra-wide distortion at 7mm but Panasonic bodies will make some corrections. I have found the lens to be sharp and to autofocus quickly. For most casual and enthusiast shooters a 24mm equivalent wide angle is all you need. Anything wider has great dramatic potential but needs a little more skill and experience to make the greatly exaggerated perspectives and elongated distances work. If you are or aspire to be an ultra-wide shooter, this lens is a joy to use and worth every penny.I am ambivalent regarding criticisms about it not accepting a filter. Color correction filters are less relevant for digital. Though I think polarizers are a must for every other lens, they do not work with an ultrawide view,. Part of the image will filter glare and be darker while the other parts have a different polarized orientation and will be bright and glaring. The built in tulip shade offers some protection against bumps and screeches. Bokeh and narrow depth of field is normally my priority but one chooses an ultra-wide range to get everything into the image so you normally don't shoot with a fast aperture and throw the background into very soft focus. I am less bothered by the aperture of f4. With M43's wider field of focus I can keep more of the background relatively sharp at a brighter aperture. If you have M43 and the image possibilities tempt you, take the plunge and buy it.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix G Vario 7-14mm f/4.0 ASPH. Lens - Micro Four Thirds Format:

I have used this with my OM-D, and like others, I get the weird purple flare showing up most times when there is a strong backlit situation. However, the edge-to-edge sharpness is great, so I will put up with this by avoiding severely back-lit situations until I get my new GH-3. The lens is even smaller than I expected (a good thing) and seems very well constructed. No complaints at all, except for the purple flare. Great for interior shots with post-processing for perspective corrections in DxO or Lightroom and CS-6.
