I use this lens on a Olympus e-pl1 and it performs well indeed. Not only does it afford a faster shutter speed but wide open all but the far corners are sharp. It speeds up the focus as well. Looks meant to be on the champagne bodied Olympus PL1 as well. It feels tightly made with no slop. Stopped down to f4 it makes for a great landscape lens or for indoors with no flash. At it's current under $240 price it's hard to pass up. I read so much about the excessive CA it was supposed to have but thus far I haven't seen any. A superb tool for the toolbox. I don't really have a bad thing to say about this lens, and would have expected to if I trusted other reviewers.

I have used Olympus E-P1 with 14-42 mm lens for two years. I think it is a good camera to bridge the gap between DSLR and point-and shoot. Recently I would like to add a second lens with a larger aperture for better indoor pictures, so I bought this 17 mm f/2.8 lens. The fixed focal length was also expected to provide sharper images. Now I have taken a number of pictures with the this 17 mm f/2.8 lens. The pictures looked great. However, when I compared this lens with the 14-42 mm lens at a similar focal length and a similar aperture (about f/3.5), I was surprised to find out that the image taken by the 14-42 mm lens is sharper. It implies that the "slightly larger aperture" in the 17-mm lens cannot produce better images. As a result, the only advantage of using the 17-mm is "lighter and smaller." Although the price of [$] is not cheap, there is probably no better "large aperture solution" at this price level. This is the value of the 17-mm. But if you already bring the 14-42 mm during a travel, there is no need to bring the 17-mm. The 14-42 mm is sharper and more versatile.

Comments about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/2.8 Lens for Micro Four Thirds Format Cameras:

The 14-42 IIR kit zoom is too bulky for a jacket pocket; therefore I bought this 17 f2.8 for my E-PM2 for lightweight daily carry. This prime lens fits fine in my pocket as planned. As this stage of its life, it is being sold at a discount at most places and even cheaper bought second hand.

Are there any advantages other than compact size? A review here concluded that the 14-42 is sharper than 17 f2.8; I totally disagree. My copy of this 17mm is no doubt significantly sharper than my 14-42 at the same focal length from corner to corner, and the 17 f2.8 has a full one stop advantage so that I can shoot at lower ISO for less grainy photos.

There is only one disadvantage. The focus speed is slower than the kit lens and most modern MFT lenses. It's not that great for chasing down a toddler or following moving targets.

Comments about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/2.8 Lens for Micro Four Thirds Format Cameras:

I have the lens on a E-P3 and it works great. Build quality is excellent, it is very flat and makes the P3 a pocket camera. I like prime lenses. I also have a 12 mm f2.0. The cool thing about the scale of these m4/3 cameras and lenses is that it is practical to haul around the camera and several lenses without too much weight. The 17 mm f/2.8 is a bit noisy while focusing but is very fast in autofocusing.

Comments about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/2.8 Lens for Micro Four Thirds Format Cameras:

This is a very useful lens. It's so compact I can attach it to my OM-D EM-5 and drop it in my front pants pocket. Autofocus is fast and smooth. It's made of a light weight plastic but the build is solid. I'm satisfied with the image quality but early readings suggest that it's not quite as sharp as the Oly 45mm 1.8 I bought at the same time. The 2.8 speed is very useful as compared to the slower zooms made for these CSCs.

Comments about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/2.8 Lens for Micro Four Thirds Format Cameras:

Great little lens. I originally picked it up to have an "everyday" camera, since lugging a dSLR around all the time can get cumbersome. I don't shoot much with a telephoto, and the only other lens I was considering the 12mm. I opted for this lens because of the smaller form factor. It's a nice balance of size price and features.

This little prime lens is a great addition to the E-PL3 camera. It's sharp, super compact, fast and has an easy manual focus ring. It gives maximum flexibility to the a camera that's already a joy to use and has become an essential part of my kit along with the 14mm-42mm zoom.

Got this one mounted on my EP-3 most of the time and it's sharp, tiny and reasonably fast at F2.8. Focus is a bit slow for the tiny movements needed but not terrible. Although AF is not silent , it's very quiet, certainly inaudible on the streets, bars and restaurants where I use it. Makes a great duo with the Oly optical VF.

We are really new to the Micro 4/3 set of cameras. We are quite used to our Canon SLRs, but we wanted something smaller to replace our point and shoot.

I really like this lens for an all around lens. It makes you work to get a good shot. I like it better than the kit lens that came with the PL3.

I noticed that it searches quite a bit while trying to focus, but I think that's the only part that bothers me.

Overall, I believe that this is a sharp lens for the money. I think that I might step up sometime in the future for the Panasonic 20mm one of these days.

I bought PL2 for travel light and this Lens help reach this goal. It is a good little fast lens. Now, the usual lens packaged with Olympus PL2 is the 14 - 42 which goes 75 mm out from the camera, not something you put in your pocket. The shortest lens for this camera is this 17mmer which is still 30mm "up front." Since the purpose of making these mirror-less is to bring DSLR down to the P&S size anyway, I wonder why they don't make a lens for that. How about a f5.6 with less elements?

With my E-PL1, the camera is totally compact with really good looks.
I have taken some pictures of kids and flowers at BBQ.
All the pictures catch the scenes very clearly. Pen camera with this lens can be used just like point and shoot cameras for almost all the scenes (with better quality!).
Even 7-year-old girl can take a good picture with my camera and this lens.
I would recommend this set (Pen with pancake lens) for the family with young children.

the lens worked well with my former Pen PL1 and is now on my PL2. it works well for low light situations. The price is a little high for what the lens is.

Comments about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/2.8 Lens for Micro Four Thirds Format Cameras:

This lens shares time with others lens use, but makes an otherwise nothing shot, into a something shot. Close ups are amazing, and and technology does the rest. Quality, results, size, and budget, all come together well in rigging the Olympus Pen Cameras. Great Job Olympus!

The lens that came with the Pen rarely gets put back on unless I really need the ability to zoom.
It takes excellent close up images in fairly low light.
I was hoping for a bit better low light performance

Comments about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/2.8 Lens for Micro Four Thirds Format Cameras:

I purchased this lens because I often want a smaller, lighter camera to carry than one with a zoom lens. On my Olympus Pen E-PL1 this fixed focal length lens certainly accomplishes the goal.

The M. Zuiko 17mm F2.8 is not only extremely compact, but very solidly built, easy to use and tack sharp at all apertures.

The focal length is the equivalent of 34mm on a 35mm camera. This makes it useful in a wide variety of situations, from landscapes to available light portraits.

I'm using this lens as the primary now on my EP-2. It's "less" therefore more! When I need a quick shot and use the EP-2 for its great resolution/file size in raw, this lens is the answer. I crop when necessary with the WA capture. Great lens for day to day street work when I don't want to lug the big gear.

Though it is not cheap, it is way cheaper than it's closer alternative (the one qith the Panasonic logo).
In terms of focal length is pretty much all you need unless you are taking pictures in "the wild" (outdoor).
Makes carrying my GF1 much easier (now it feels like a point and shoot).
One additional benefit is the vintage look that it gave to my GF1.
                                Overall a great lens.

Comments about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/2.8 Lens for Micro Four Thirds Format Cameras:

It doesn't take up much room and is reasonably fast. You can use it in a variety of situations and just have to use your feet for the Zoom. Most subjects don't realize how close you can get. It also takes almost wide angel shots. I would have given it a 5 star rating if it were just a little faster than f/2.8. I also use it on my Lumix GF1 with no problems.
