The Cullmann Magnesit 522 Tripod is an intelligently-designed medium class tripod meant for use with smaller SLR camera/lens combinations, such as an entry-class or semi-professional SLR with variable-aperture consumer zoom lens up to a <150mm medium telephoto lens.

The Magnesit 522 reaches a maximum height of 5.16', and thanks to the independent leg spread and 2-part center column it can operate at a very low working height of just 9.4" including the height of the 3-way pan/tilt head.  It is named 'Magnesit' because it has extensive use of magnesium in the casings and fittings.  Magnesium's a light and stable metal, helping to contribute to the 519's low weight of just 3.3 pounds.

All Magnesit tripods come with an additional short center column that enables the tripods to be used for extreme macro work, when the short center column is put in "upside-down", or when the tripod is used at it's lowest position, where the normal center column would hit the ground.

Magnesium and aluminum alloy combination
Foam-padded upper leg segments ease handling in cold and carrying upon shoulder
Individual leg angle locks and detachable center column allow excellent minimum working height
Retractable spikes for use upon soft ground
Weight hook at bottom of center column for aided stability
3-Way pan/tilt head accepts all Cullmann quick release plates
Maximum upper leg diameter of 22mm
Optional #55396 case

Comments about Cullmann Magnesit 522 Aluminum Tripod w/ 3-Way Head - Supports 11 lbs (5kg):

I bought this tripod for its solid construction and ability to get extremely low for flower photography. It has performed well with my Nikon D5100 and somewhat-bulky lenses (55-300 mm; 105 mm macro) in day-to-day use as well as a workshop in Death Valley. The foam padding around the upper part of the legs makes it comfortable to carry where necessary. The legs are easy to extend and retract, and the tripod is reasonably compact when fully folded up. The tripod also achieves a nice balance between sturdiness and manageable weight. There are a few minor cons. First, the tabs on the legs occasionally get a bit loose, but a simple turn with the supplied Allen wrench fixes that quickly. Second, two of the adjusting tabs on the ball head occasionally interfere with one another, requiring a few seconds to set things up correctly. Third, the interchangeable center posts were difficult to swap out the first time, because the post was screwed onto the ball head too tightly at the factory and required a wrench to loosen carefully. Finally, a second level, on the ball head in addition to the one on the base, would be helpful, particularly for shooting landscapes and panoramas.Even with these minor cons, I have been very pleased with this tripod, and expect to use it for years to come.

Comments about Cullmann Magnesit 522 Aluminum Tripod w/ 3-Way Head - Supports 11 lbs (5kg):

This is the first decent tripod that I found for under $100, shipped.
              Imported from Germany.
Considering that our central bank is currently debasing the dollar
              faster then their central bank
is debasing the euro (more than 1.4 USD/EU at the time
of purchase), the USD price is reasonable.
The tripod is well made and solid. Good for my still cameras
              and my daughter's video camera.
The only potential problem that I see with it is that the foam-like material on the legs might not last for a long time.
              (Such materials usually age quickly.)
              Otherwise, a very nice tripod.

Comments about Cullmann Magnesit 522 Aluminum Tripod w/ 3-Way Head - Supports 11 lbs (5kg):

I searched thoroughly for a tripod as useful as a Swiss army knife and this is it! For it's light weight, it's ability to support equipment weight, and it's price, this it is perfect for a day on the road. — I've used it indoors to photograph artwork & for time lapse video, outdoors to portrait & landscape photos, particularly 360 views, and for photographing my tiny chihuahua which requires a very low perspective.

I purchased the 55396 LEATHER CARRYING CASE to use with it. I can easily slip it into and out of the the case and set it up at lightening speed. The spikes in the feet help hold ground & the ability to hang a weight from it helps keep the tripod sturdy in windy weather. (I use a handbag as the weight, or some cheese cloth to wrap around whatever rocks I can grab onsite.) The leveler bubble is also quite useful, particularly when the legs are set on uneven ground.

I had a lighter weight tripod for almost the same $$ before this and now I feel spoiled. You can definitely go up in stability and features for more money but this was everything I needed for doing my studio shots (food/desserts/event tables).

I use this with my D300 and my 14-24mm 2.8 lens and I say it really keeps it tight when set side-ways for portraits. I love the flexibility of the legs so it allows me to have my tripod as low as nine inches for ground-level photography. Other features like the balance, the center-weight hook for added stability (which I truly love) and retractable spikes at an awesome price (can't afford a tripod with a standalone head atm), I am sincerely happy that I bought this. Easy to carry, foam legs for easy gripping, and smooth adjustments. Just plain love it.
