Comments about Bower SLY 358S 8mm f/3.5 Fisheye Lens For Sony / Minolta APS-C Cameras:

I make movies but I also take pictures. On the DSLR side, I have alreedy learned what to do in order for the camera to use this lens - just a simple click in one of the menu optons. In my video work I have used wide lenses but never anything below 16mm. I considered fisheye to be a novelty with limited application. But I didn't like missing a range in my lens set, so I I waited until I had some spare time to fool around with a "novlety" lens. I must admit that it is addictive to play with this. It opened up a world of possibilities. the barrel distorion is not as extreme as I have seen in other focal points, so there are many more applications. As soon as i am done practiving new techniques with this glass I will probably upgrade, but currently the quality of what I have been filming has been suitable for the material. Perhaps my enjoyment of the footage is blinding me to any drawbacks. I don't use autofocus so I am not affected by this being a manual focus lens. Honestly, the price is what lured me toward a lens that I didn't think I would use for more than a rare clip. I didn't expect much. So this went far above my expectations. If you have a creative side and haven't tried out somethign this wide, you're in for a treat.

Comments about Bower SLY 358S 8mm f/3.5 Fisheye Lens For Sony / Minolta APS-C Cameras:

A great UWA. Nothing similar for the money. Sharp. There are no electronics. No AF, No Auto Apeture. Not a problem with this lens on a Sony SLT. Lots of Depth of field. Care needed in composition.
The focus seemed to be off, but easily fixed.

This lense is good for what I use it for. Im a casual aviation photographer. This lense allows me to get interesting views of planes, but it is best for pics of the flight deck/cockpit where theres little room to move back and capture the whole view infront of you. Good lens and would recomend.

Comments about Bower SLY 358S 8mm f/3.5 Fisheye Lens For Sony / Minolta APS-C Cameras:

I tried this lens as an economical way to get a fisheye lens. It requires manual control of focus and aperture, so I set my Alpha 100 to shutter priority. With some experimentation I was soon shooting fun and interesting holiday pictures. Note that the lens does not directly focus to infinity. To get quality focusing at a distance, it is necessary to use a high aperture to assist the focusing. At f22 I was able to get pleasing outdoor pictures. There are separate rings to control focus and aperture, and both are easy to use.

The big tradeoff is between a very wide angle of view, versus a lot of picture distortion. There is not a straight line anywhere in the picture. That said, while some pictures come out grotesque, most are quite charming. Check your pictures as you take them, and try adjustments until you have a shot you like.

This is the fourth lens for my Sony Alpha 100, which is still going strong 6 years after I bought it. This will not be my primary lens, but when I want to get everyone at the dinner table, or a whole mountain range, it will do what none of the other lenses can come close to doing. Mechanically the lens has performed flawlessly, and I am happy I added it to my collection.

I have had this lens for a couple weeks now and is just a blast to use. I am not typically a UWA shooter but the 8 (effective 12mm) 180deg view very interesting.Used with the NEX - A adapter and focus peaking it is very hard to miss a shot.On a pentaprism unit (Maxxum 7,a700) manual focus is OK.. Difficult on a pentamirror (maxxum 5, the Sony 2XX ,3XX and 5xx series).Very hard to misfocus at f8 and using the distance scale. Feels surprisingly well built for lens of this price point

Comments about Bower SLY 358S 8mm f/3.5 Fisheye Lens For Sony / Minolta APS-C Cameras:

My first fisheye was the Nikon f/2.8 on a d3000. A physically smaller system than my Sony a-200 and the Bower. Fisheye lenses are super fun to use and do wonders if you ever get stuck in a mental rut or are shooting a pretty boring subject.
My copy works great, looks great, and won't break the bank. The 180 degree field of view makes it great for catching all the action in one frame and the rectilinear conversions look fantastic. The lens is sharp from center to corner.

Comments about Bower SLY 358S 8mm f/3.5 Fisheye Lens For Sony / Minolta APS-C Cameras:

The attraction was the low cost.
I cannot justify too much for an occasional use specialty lens.
The images are great. Just what I was after.
The only minor issue is the manual focus. You will need to set your Sony setup menu to allow the shutter to be used w/o lens before using it. Auto focus ultra wide fish-eye lenses were much more expensive than this.

Very reasonable price for a fish-eye lens
and not too heavy for usage.
Manual focusing is acceptable but would prefer
a depth of field scale on the lens barrel.

I have had this lens for about a week and a half now and have taken over 500 pictures with it. It is a really nice lens for the price. The pics have been very good with good color and focus.
The only draw back with this lens is that you have to do all of your camera settings your self because there isn't a motor drive on it to use your auto or semi auto settings. But the good news is that you will have to learn how to use your camera better.
Nothing bad to say about this lens. I am very happy with it so far.

Comments about Bower SLY 358S 8mm f/3.5 Fisheye Lens For Sony / Minolta APS-C Cameras:

This lens offers some of the least distortion I have seen at this width. Panoramas are much simpler to create because of that.

The DOF is nearly infinite, so simply knowing where you subject is, up to about 12 feet, is all you need to approximate, because after that ... it does not make much difference in focus.

The upper and lower "ears" of the permanent lens hood become obvious when used on a Full Frame sensor. They need to either be remove (shortened) for that use or "cropped out" during post processing.

This lens definitely provides solid "bang for the buck" compared to the alternatives. A terrific addition to the lens bag of the occasional shooter of this focal length.
