I like to record some of my practicing (viola) and analyze it. I also like to practice tough passages using A-B repeat and at various speeds (at same pitch). In the past I used a minidisc recorder for the former and a Tascam CD-VT1 Mark II for the latter. I got the Sony M10 several weeks before Christmas. First of all, it replaced both of the above and was more convenient than either. It was easy to use with a short learning curve. It has more switches than you might think by looking at it. Besides the expected ones on the front, it has several switches on the side and back (mic sensitivity, manual/auto record level, speed control on/off, volume). I tried recording a Christmas program my daughter and family were in. I used a manual recording level (adjusted by the wheel on the right). I wasn't particularly close and just held the recorder. Yet the recording came out well beyond what I expected. It was so easy and of high enough quality that in the future, I intend to have my wife record some of my performances from her seat in the audience. Of course, you don't get pro quality with mikes in all the right places, etc, but it is surprisingly good, especially considering how ridiculously easy it is. My only complaint is that the playback speed adjustment is buried in a menu. On my Tascam it was a control, right on top. I can live with that. The build quality is very good. It was fun to use. The two double A batteries seem to last forever.

I gave this two stars because I like the look and feel and features. Unfortunately, this does not do seamless file splits whether splitting within interal memory, across internal and external memory, or entirely within external memory. The TMark function also introduces a "pop" at the file split. I have a number of digital recorders all of which split files seamlessly. This one is going back.

Comments about PCM-M10 Portable Audio Recorder (Black):

I'm a musician and have been using digital recorders for recording live performances, rehearsals and jams for years. I really liked the Zoom H2, and then the Zoom H2N, which were a good value, and worked well. However, they would start falling apart after a year or two of heavy use, with some cheap plastic parts. The wire mesh microphone screens tended to fall off and I ended up using rubber bands to try to hold my H2N together. I researched alternatives and settled on the Sony PCM10 to upgrade. I am very happy with it. It is a much better engineered and designed product. It fits comfortably in a shirt or coat pocket. The dedicated buttons minimize the need to go scrolling through menus. (I especially like the delete button). So far, I have not found any negatives, other than possibly difficult to read the small screen.

Comments about PCM-M10 Portable Audio Recorder (Red):

My video friends overlook this recorder because it doesn't have XLR inputs, but if you have a decent field mixer, the M10 can take advantage of it with a line input. Other features I like are a 5-second prerecord buffer and a limiter. And the battery life is exceptional. When I load my SD302 mixer and M10 with batteries in the morning, I know I'm good for the day.

Use with my Panasonic G7 to record atmos, dialogue, and interviews. Low noise floor, inbuilt mics are very good. My only criticism is the font size of the interface is a little small for my 50 year old eyes - I really need glasses now. I use it with a Giant Squid Lav, and it's a good combination.

Comments about PCM-M10 Portable Audio Recorder (Black):

Bought two of these back in 2011 (I think) and have used them for all sorts of uses - with shotgun mics, with lav mics, line in from audio board during events etc..

Last year the clock had to be reset every time we turned them on. I read online it was the internal battery having died. So I powered it on connected to the wall AC power via the included cord and left it on standby for about 30 hours. Now it works fine again!
Another thing worth mentioning is that these things lasted a couple years of use with the included AA batteries.

Pretty much my only complaints all along were lack of XLR and when recording really long events in the .wav format, the files are split so I have just been using the highest .mp3 setting for years now and it's fine. If I need a more robust/less lossy file for say a broadcast voiceover, than I use .wav.

I also have Tascam and Zoom recorders but I still prefer these old Sony M10s unless I need XLR

I needed a compact device to do street/ field recordings. This is so great - what ever I record can be imported instantly through usb and dropped into my DAW. 24-bit/96kHz!
pretty simple to navigate barely needed instructions.

It's small, simple to use, and has fairly quiet pre-amps, but the mics are average and the sound is tinny. It's not the miracle that many reviews would have it to be. I've made hundreds of recordings with it.

I was looking for a handheld recorder to replace my Zoom H1. This Sony recorder performs so much better in many aspects: self noise is CONSIDERABLY lower than similar recorders, battery life is great, I've used it for many hours now and the battery still shows full. I wish there was a proprietary shock-mount or something similar, but I suppose you can always use a third party one.

I love the M10 as much as anyone for all of the excellent reasons listed above. But I did spill a miniscule amount of beer on the buttons, and no amount of distilled water, alcohol, or electronics cleaner (and drying out in rice) will make it work again. The main controls IC is completely exposed through openings in the button panel. I wish Sony's engineers had given this even the slightest consideration, and it could easily have been protected.

Comments about PCM-M10 Portable Audio Recorder (Black):

I'm guessing that Sony would like to retire the 2009 technology in this recorder and get you to buy one of the newer Sony models, but Sony just can't do that because the ongoing demand for the M10 is just too high. The newer Sony models might be fine, but the built-in battery on those is a deal breaker for me.

I've had time to play with my new M10 and I love it. What I really like about it besides the excellent sound quality is the form factor. I can record with it in my shirt pocket. I can put it in another pocket and run a lav or binaural mic to it. I can, with gentle handling, carry it around. I can also mount in on my vidcam and, if I want, plug in external mics (with a 3.5mm connector).

No useless features; I like them all even if I don't use them right now. File-splitting complaints? Huh? I have none, as that is something I easily deal with in post.

I also have a couple of Zoom H-5s, which is a great recorder with lots on add-on options, but it doesn't fit in the same pockets, looks obvious (and nothing like a cell phone), and feels somewhat "plastic-y" and fragile in comparison to the M10.

I purchased this device about a month ago. The first thing I noticed is that (1) wow this thing is delicate but well built. The recordings I use this for are videography related, and often I'll want to catch ambient noises and also interviews. The device has a very low noise floor, which I was very happy with. In addition,I was able to connect some shotgun mic's through an adapter that work well.

Have not had time to properly test this unit yet, however....... did a quick recording & everything worked fine, controls are simple. I was looking for something that recorded mp3's & this seems to be the best bet.

The PCM-M10 provides me sufficient quiet gain to record preferred levels I want for interviews I film. It is part of a compact, lightweight, portable kit that includes a DSLR camera, shotgun mic, lavalier mic, and stereo to mono splitter. I sync up the audio from the M10 with the camera audio, and have excellent results. I'm happy, the client is happy... and even the viewer is happy... because we end up with clarity and no noise... all thanks to the PCM-M10

Comments about PCM-M10 Portable Audio Recorder (Black):

I'm a run-n-gun shooter for fun stuff, mainly documentaries for my friends/family. I needed something small that I could use with my unobtrusive equipment. I use a lav and a shotgun, depending on the situation. Usually I use a lav, since carrying a shotgun around attracts lots of attention. Most often, however, I just use the Sony PCM-M10 right on top of my camera, or separate from it, to catch the ambient audio of what I'm shooting. I also use it up close to people to catch their voices. It is the most compact system I've made up for my purposes so far.

The good thing about the PCM-M10 is that it is small and compact and that it has very high quality audio.

The bad thing (not too bad, though) is that it is omnidirectional. So, very often I find myself frustrated by not getting good audio of someones speaking, or of specific sounds in the environment, because all of the other sounds are picked up as well. A little directionality, like with the DR-40 would improve the selective audio that I'm often trying to record.

Another good thing about this device is that I can stick a lav mic into it and have the person put the recorder in his/her pocket. The result: reliable, great, audio of a person doing doing whatever.

The pre-amps are alright, but I suggest using a separate pre-amp if you're going to use a shotgun mic.

Metal tripod mount. Metal Face. This has the best limiter of any recorder in the price range. Great shooting with lav mic in auto mic high. Conected unit to DJ console and music band with hard base. Recorder lasted all day with battery full. Wired control with RED light to confirm you are recording and wake the recorder, don't complain about a wireless controller, this has a Red confirmation light to start and stop recorder and wake it. Tracks... to mark changes in the track. If you don't need XLR, get this recorder. For Event Video the onmi mics are the best. Great MP3 Player, Great MP3 capture from computer streams. Battery life if the best feature. I have a tascam 60D, using a mic with a battery in it, it lasts about 2.5 hours, this sony lasts for hours and hours on 2AA. Wish it came with a case included but I'll take the control remote over the Case anyday. Some lowpro small cases fit perfectly. In manual the audio out is too high for the GH3 even if I set the GH3 to it's lowest setting, setting the M10 on auto balances both out but the audio and balances out, but better results with in manual. I have hit the red clipping light and the recording won't distort, the limiter kicks in and saves you. Pricey windscreen, I use a tascam windscreen that came with a kit with mic holder and bag, workds great on.

I own two PCM-M10s that I use every week to record speakers with AT 822 mics with 1/8" plugs. The recorders are an easy and quick setup. They have an on-off bass filter which, combined with the filter on the AT mics, destroys all background noise from AC units directly overhead with no voice distortion and gerat clarity. I have been doing this gig for 10 years with various kit, and the PCM-M10s are the best. 2 AA batteries do at least 20 hours of recording.

Comments about PCM-M10 Portable Audio Recorder (Red):

I use the PCM-M10 for playing music into either headphones or an amp in order to play along and learn. I did use it for recording a speaker and it provided great noise free sound.

One limitation I have noticed is that when I loaded my 32Gb card up with music, (about 16Gb), the unit would lock up and not respond until I had removed the batteries and rebooted it. I did remove a large portion of the music, down to about 9-10Gb and it seems to be fine now. I have no plans to return it though.

One other possible negative: I could not find where to adjust the backlight. It is apparently not adjustable. I would prefer an adjustable backlight.

It's compact and provides good noise-free recording.

It's hard to believe something that's so small can do such a spectacular job of recording. After doing extensive online research I purchased the PCM 10 to use as field recorder to bring along while bird watching. This thing is incredible! It's small enough to carry anywhere, is dead easy to use, and boots up in a matter of seconds and the sound, oh the beautiful sound...amazing. Since taking it in the field I've got recordings of Loons I could barely hear without the recorder turned on, of a Barn Owl Owlet screaming and screaming waiting for mom to bring food, and of a Coopers hawk quietly calling as it landed in it's nest. It's been an wonderful addition to birding kit, I'm really excited to take out to get more great recordings. My only disappointment? I didn't purchase the PCM-M10 a lot sooner.
