Product Highlights
  • Front Accepts Softgrid Light Modifier

The softbox is one of the basic tools of lighting--softening, diffusing and directing the light in a controlled way. The Creative Light 1x4' Recessed Front Softbox is 1x4' (30x120 cm) This softbox has an external and an internal diffuser, both attached with touch fasteners. An optional soft grid can be attached to the front, reducing the angle of light to 50°. The size and shape of the subject dictates the size and shape of the softbox you use for a main light--smaller softboxes for smaller subjects, larger ones for larger subjects. The softbox can also be used as a fill light or an accent light. All-steel support rods are included. Dedicated speedrings for most popular brands of flash head are available separately.

Good overall quality look & feel. Light quality is nice, but I find the box a little cumbersome to assemble but more-so to disassemble (but perhaps this is usual for all striplights). I find removing the first rod from the speedring during disassembly is very tough due to the thickness of the rod entering the speedring plus the very high tensile force of all 4 rods in this box. Also the snaps securing the internal diffusion baffle are very tight so they can be difficult to unsnap during breakdown. I think velcro would have been better. For these reasons I take 1 star off. On the plus side, the grids are relatively economical and attach very well. I wish I had more experience with other boxes to compare with, but overall I say this product line is good value for studio use but it's probably not ideal for location use for the breakdown issues I mentioned.

I ordered based on other online reviews of this product. [...] I was initially impressed by the quality of the materials as I unboxed everything. When I went to assemble, the support rod pockets on the corners of the softbox are not sealed, allowing the support rods to protrude. Once the softbox was assembled, the softbox immediately began collapsing as the rods popped through the pockets.I corrected the issue by sewing the ends closed. The back of the softbox didn't quite cover the edges of the speed ring (factory photogenic speed ring) which allows light to spill. Again, easily corrected by using a little cinefoil however, you shouldn't have to "fix" brand new products in order to use them.

Good light. Good build quality. When using the hotshoe speedring the flash (580EX II) will not fit with a flash trigger on the hotshoe... it must be wired with a PC sync cable. Otherwise it is good design and execution.

I've read the poor reviews, but Creative must have improved the material quality. Mine is very heavy duty, I like the fiberglass rods, it is way more strudy than my Elincrom.

It's not a Elinchron soft box but it's very well constructed, much better than other good brands.

The metal sticks which creates the structure are different, better to hold at the end, very resistant... The edges are very rigid, easy to stick the baffles.

The light it produces is very smooth and beautiful with all the baffles.

              It's not so lightweight.

Provides the same lighting as the bigger brand names for a much more reasonable cost. I've rated it 3 stars because the materials and construction are mid-grade at best in comparison to the more expensive options. So if you are brutal to your gear you might want to opt for the more expensive softbox that is made stronger and with more durable materials. I also have the fabric grid for this box and consider it an essential accessory

I've used many types & brands of light modifiers, and I would say this one is not up to par with most most of them. The construction of the soft box itself is very good. Although, the rods and speedring are ridiculously heavy. Additionally, the fit between the CR speedring & rods is not confidence inspiring (especially considering the tension between the two. Inner baffle uses buttons, which is nice. However, the buttons can fall-apart. This happened to me. I had to return the entire Box and accessories to just get a replacement of the inner diffuser. Also, good luck on contacting the manufacturer. You will never hear from them. [...]

maybe because i'm somewhat new to softboxes (more of a beauty dish guy), i could not believe how much effort it took to put this thing together. every second of the way i was worried i was about to rip this thing. by the time it was finished my back, wrists and elbows were in pain (and I work out 5 days a week, so it's not like i'm not used to work).
I actually had a much easier time putting together the 5' octabox than this little thing, maybe because of the rectangular shape.
it does pack away well though, and light to carry esp compared to beauty dishes, but this isn't for me.

Creative Light is a newer line of lighting gear and as such I did a lot of "research" for the pros and cons. That said nothing is a substitute for a hands on look at the product. The Creative Light Softbox is a top shelf, well constructed light modifier the features everything one would look for. The design is excellent, accessories well thought out and packaged well. At the price point vs. some of the others out there, I have no hesitation in HIGHLY recommending this. Since nothing is perfect :-) I rarely give out 5 stars, but this is close, very close.

This is the new standard for quality made modifiers. I have bought two CL Softboxes now and the temptation to sell the rest of the mixed set of stuff I have and replace it all with CL is HUGE! Construction is spot on, materials feel 3x the quality of other brands in this price range. And the pricing is a bargin when compared with the other "Pro grade" lines.

I had heard that the new Creative Light line provided great quality for the money, and I was not disappointed. This is a rugged, well designed stripbox that is a pleasure to assemble and use. It has strategically located panels to make reaching the speedring easier; once assembled they wrap around the edge of the back and Velcro closed with nary a light leak. The internal diffuser attaches with snaps not Velcro, making it much easier and more positive to insert, and the front diffusion fabric can be attached anywhere from the front lip of the box to about an inch inset, making this modifier even more flexible.

I am using this with the standard Paul C Buff speedring, and it goes together with no problems, aside from the dexterity usually required to assemble a softbox.

The only downside to this stripbox is that it makes me want to run out and buy some more Creative Light modifiers. Let's see ... another couple strips ... a 2x3 medium box ... This could be a real problem.
