This made in Japan shortwave is a one and only. After much study, I came to find that maybe every other shortwave radio is made in China and is of questionable quality and reception ability. No matter what brand name you look at, you can find the same radio on [@] with a strange chinease name on it. Years ago no one wanted Japansese made products, well now at least we still have one model here that isn't made in china. Think Nikon cameras. This radio is heavy for it's size, feels solid, has nice quality buttons and what I figure to be good sound quality. It is a small speaker so you won't be getting a lot big speaker sound but it is plenty loud enough and plenty clear; it is all I need for talk radio. This radio picks up some FM and AM stations that I often can not get at my house. The shortwave tuning is done in AM mode by just continuing to scan up the frequency range beyond what most refer to as medium wave or AM. There is a direct entry feature where you can enter the frequency rather than scrolling or seaching to it. You can direct enter the frequency and then dial in more precisely for better reception using the buttons. The only thing that I kind of wish it had was a twist knob so seeking could be faster than using the buttons. For me, with shortwave, I am often "browsing" for a station and don't yet know where a lot of them are so a knob to seek with is easier. The controls here are more like a car stereo tuner. Overall though I would choose this radio over a chinease made unit with a poor quality knob any day. I had a breif experience with a grundig 350 and was suprised at how wobbly and cheap feeling the buttons and knobs were. I can't figure they would have lasted long and reception was worse than with an old $20 transistor radio. [*] The 350 couldn't pick up even local FM stations; facinating. Buy this Sony if you want a real shortwave radio. It comes with a line out if you want to connect it to a big sound system. It also has a headphone jack and a plug for an external AM antenna. The package included decent a wind up wire antenna and a very nice soft leather like case. So much other stuff you buy now that is made in china just makes me not care too much for it because I know it won't last long and isn't worth much but this little radio takes me back to my first CD player when I was a kid. It just feels nice and makes you want to take care of it as you would a fine tuned instrument.

I bought a 7600gr primarily to listen to amateur radio operators outdoors, and listen to amateur radio and internet audio through my Ipod-type FM transmitter while in various rooms in my house. I wanted good basic "radio" performance (sensitvity, selectivity, s/n ratio) on AM and FM. Audio quality was not to be a primary concern since pretty well all I would be listening to was spoken language, not singing or music. This radio was to replace my Sony 2010 which needs repair, and my Kaito 1102 which is a low priced radio for a reason (you get what you pay for).
The unit seems reasonably well built. Looks good, other than the fact that I personally prefer black over silver. Well, on to the meat of the matter:
    Pros:
    1. As mentioned, seems well built and looks good.
    2. Made in Japan, which is a plus.
    3. Good size. Not too big or too small.
    4. Decent adjacent frequency rejection on SSB.
    5. Synch detector useful in SOME (albeit few) circumstances.
    Cons:
    1. Poor rejection on FM. Was getting interference on FM that I have gotten on no other radio I own. I do have a low power AM station close by. I think this was the source. Nonetheless, have not had the problem with any of my other radios.
    2. Controls difficult to use in the dark. The tuning buttons are so close together and so light to touch that you can hardly differentiate between the course and fine tuning buttons. I didn't think the lack of a tuning knob would be an issue. It was.
    3. Reciever is pretty noisy on SSB. Birdie on one of the 80 meter frequencies I like to listen to. Didn't keep it long enough to tell where other birdies may be.
    4. Poor image rejection. The aforementioned AM broadcast station came in loud and clear on 40 meters. Even my cheap Kaito did not do this. This was actually the last straw by which I decided to return the unit.
    5. AM sensitivity average at best.
    6. SSB warble did not bother me much, but for those who hate it, this unit's definately got it.

So, overall I was simply not impressed with the unit. Sony has the know-how to do better. I loved my 2010 before it developed problems, and this radio is no match for a 2010. I just with they'd bring the 2010 back, with some updates, perhaps. Some radios you just "connect" with. You can tell, almost intuitively that you have a great radio. Sadly, the 7600GR is not one of them. Strangely enough, one of the greatest, if not THE greatest radio I own (and I own a LOT of radios of various types), considering price and overall quality, is my little Sony SRF-49 AM/FM pocket radio. Durability, sensitivity, selectivity, noise ratio and audio quality are outstanding! Sony CAN do it. They've proved that. If they only WILL, is the question.

My experience in returning the radio was great. Smooth as silk. No problems with the seller, just with the manufacturer.

Hope you find this info useful.

Bought this radio to replace my old SONY ICF-2001D, which I had to send to retirement. SW is a habit acquired many years ago: listen to world News in their original version (unfiltered). Must mention the improvement in the attenuator control, basic in a world of permanently increasig statics.

Comments about Sony ICF-SW7600GR FM Stereo World Band Receiver Radio:

I have been using a Sony "SW7600" model since 1994, tuning to local FM as well as SW broadcast from far away countries. Two months ago the AM tuning was off by 10's of kHz. A quick search on the Internet found that this is a known problem for this model due to defective capacitors. I am handy with electronics repair so I ordered the parts and fixed the radio. During my research I came across a lot of information about various radios, from early Sony models to the latest coming from Chinese manufactures such as Tecsun. I like portable radios the size of the SW7600. I think it is a good compromise between size and circuitry/choice of components. I found two radios particularly appealing: the Sony SW7600GR and the Tecsun PL380, so I ordered the Sony from B&H and the Tecsun from a Hong Kong company on ebay, to see how the last of the 7600 models designed in 2001 (and made in Japan) compared to a relatively recent (2009)radio designed and made in China.

In terms of performance on AM/FM/SW reception, there is no clear winner. Using a decent pair of headphones (Sennheiser PX-100II), the Sony has better audio under all circumstances. The FM stereo was so good that without looking at the clock I once listen for 3 hours of classical music program non stop. The Tecsun however can resolve weaker signals better, and to a greater extent, reject interference from household appliances as well as strong signals from local radio stations, particularly in FM.

Using the whip antenna at late afternoons in my back yard, I could use the SSB mode on the 7600GR (the PL380 do not have SSB) to pick up strong amateur radio signals from as far as the US Mid West, as well as some CB traffic from the adjacent province/state (I am in British Columbia).

In ergonomics, the PL380 wins hands down. Much progress have been made in the last decade after Sony stopped R&D for their radio in 2001. The PL380 uses a DSP radio chip which works nicely with the controller chip to provide thumb wheel tuning in addition to key tuning/direct entry, 550 memory locations, one-touch scan and store to memory, large display with lots of useful information, and built-in charger in case NiMH cells are used. Finally, the PL380 is about 2/3 the size of the 7600GR, 1/3 the weight, and 1/3 the price.

However, the 7600GR is such a unique radio that I am glad I cound get one while it is still made in Japan and available for purchase. The radio looks much better than in any picture I've seen. It is very well made and the keys feels tactile yet positive (the Tecsun is also well made but not as refined as the Sony - just solid). For me the audio quality of the 7600GR is the strongest point - it even has a stereo line level out which I tried to connect to my Quad amp/Celestion speaker system, and respectively a pair of active KEF desktop speakers, both with astonishing results.

The "personality" of the 7600GR is probably due to its older yet high quality design with lots of relatively "discrete" componets (per the schematic diagram in the service manual). It is the last of the legendary 7600 lineage - radios are no longer designed and made this way, probably due to extreme cost control. Newer radios may perform as good (if not better) in some key areas, more user friendly, cost less, but hard to beat the 7600GR as a package. If you love radio and quality, get one and you will not be disappointed.

Note: in case you use NiMH cells for the 7600GR, replace the cells after about 30 hours of use (or use a meter to check the battery's voltage if you can) bacause the radio can still operate at 3V (0.75V per cell) and a NiMH cell could be ruined at such a stage of discharge.

Its a High Performance AM, FM, LW, SW & FM portable receiver. I owned many radios over the years and this GEM beats them all. The radio is NOT made in China and is manufactured in a high tech manufacturing plant located in Japan that has strict quality control standards. If you want a high performance radio that will last many years this is the one!

Comments about Sony ICF-SW7600GR FM Stereo World Band Receiver Radio:

I will not be using this for SW radio. I just wanted a high quality AM/FM with plenty of presets. This has it. The good Sony guts of the radio pulls in many stations with clarity. This radio is a good value, and it has shortwave for those who are interested. The overall size of the radio would be just right for many people, and using AA batteries is a plus.

Comments about Sony ICF-SW7600GR FM Stereo World Band Receiver Radio:

Seems to be a very sensitive radio in a small package. I have listened to broadcasts on AM, FM and Short Wave as well as Amateur Radio Operators during contacts. All of these were accomplished with the built-in telescoping antenna. I will later put up an outside antenna, but so far, the radio has performed better than I had expected and I'm looking forward to using it more in the future.

I've had mine several years and like it.
                      The good:
You can save stations and go right them.
There is no drift digital tuning.
Good AM band selectivity and sensitivity.
Easy on batteries, they last a looong time.
                      Very portable.
Comes with a nice little soft cary case.
                      Looks good.
Shortwave works well enough for a tiny radio with minimal antenna. There isn't much on shortwave anymore anyway.

                      The bad:
FM band is a disapointment in both selectivity and sensitivity, more like a cheap receiver here.

Not very intuitive to set some of the options, so don't lose the book.

Overall, I use it mostly for some quick listining to AM news. I don't have to hunt or fine tune stations and it doesn't drift.

Comments about Sony ICF-SW7600GR FM Stereo World Band Receiver Radio:

I've only had this one day, so I must state that first of all. Before this I had a more expensive Icom R75, and other ham radio transceivers like the Yaesu 897D. I was looking for something to let me listen to the HF amateur bands again, and this has been working well for me so far.

I also missed shortwave and I've been pleased with using it inside so far with the stock antenna. I'm very surprised at how well it does. It has enough controls on it to help me get the most out of my listening, especially on SSB. I appreciate the extra wire antenna that comes with it as well.

One slight disappointment was how no shortwave frequencies were pre-programmed into it. It isn't a big deal though. Out of the box it just makes it easier sometimes to have some popular SW stations programmed in.

I must also say that I live in Canada and B&H is so great at letting you pay for any customs fees up front and see how much it is, or choose to pay upon arrival. I picked the pay up front option and no other charges showed up upon delivery and it came in just 3 business days for such a reasonable shipping fee. Usually buying from the US is a painful and expensive experience, but not with B&H.

Comments about Sony ICF-SW7600GR FM Stereo World Band Receiver Radio:

I find there are still some shortwave services worth listening to, though some European services have stopped beaming to the U.S. (Radio Nederland). With the included spool antenna this does a surprisingly good job, and the operating procedures are not forbiddingly complex. One nice touch is the 'hold' button to deactivate all controls once you've found something worth staying with awhile. A great bedside radio with an AC adapter. The tiny speaker does ok but you might want something larger for music.

I'm really impressed with the service and speed they dispatched the radio. I got it only 8 days later. The radio is great, even works in my insulated steel work shed. Would definitely recomend B&H and the radio. Regards. Harold. Perth, WA

Comments about Sony ICF-SW7600GR FM Stereo World Band Receiver Radio:

This is the second one I have bought, nothing wrong with the first one other than the AC power packed up some years ago. It has accompanied me as my work has taken me to some of the remotest parts of Australia and elsewhere and enabled me to keep in touch with what is going on in the world. It wakes me every morning no matter where I may be whether at home in bed, staying in a hotel or under canvas in the bush. I decided that as old Mr Sony is now dead and the family are no longer so interested in manufacturing premium shortwave/worldband radios such as these little beauties it was my last chance to get one as they are being discontinued through marketing priorities. When the ICF-SW7600GR first came out they cost heaps more $$s and even my first one, bought secondhand, cost more back then. You won't getter a better worldband radio than this compact gem and the price is remarkable.
