          Comments about Miller 1833 Compass15 2-Stage Carbon-Fiber System:

I've been shooting film and televison professionally since 1988 and have owned many, many tripods - some of them good, some of them not so good. The Miller Compass 15 Solo Two-Stage Carbon fiber tripod is by far the best tripod I have owned, period. It breaks down small enough that it fits into my suitcase for international travel, yet it reaches heights that require me to get on a stool to use it. The head is incredibly smooth in all environments - from desert heat to arctic cold.I've used this head with cameras ranging from a DSLR to a fully tricked-out Sony F5 equipped with mattebox, follow focus, Anton Bauer battery, and 7 inch monitor. The head works flawlessly with both ends of the spectrum. Is it cheap? No. Is it the best bang for the buck you will find? Quite probably. It is for me.

            Comments about Miller 1833 Compass15 2-Stage Carbon-Fiber System:

I live in Southeast asia doing a variety of work such as documentaries, news, corporates and advertising.

This tripod suits doing it all!

Before purchasing I did a lot of research and the Miller and Compass Heads kept on surfacing in my research.

In the past, I had only owned a manfrotto 501, but have used numerous other tripod brands such as sachtlers, etc. A friend of mine had a miller and I never really took to it due to the need to have to screw the leg joints in order to extend or collapse the sticks.

That was my biggest apprehension about getting the miller sticks. When shooting I like to work quick and be able to quickly set up the sticks to get a quick shot of something happening. So yes, it does take a bit of getting used to it and yes maybe it takes a bit longer to set up, but the pros out weigh this.

The tripod is nice and light and I can carry them forever and the Compass15 head is a dream. I've used everything from a Mark3 to a Red Epic with them and the sticks were great for all of them.

The smoothness of the Compass15 allows me to great some great shots.

              Comments about Miller 1833 Compass15 2-Stage Carbon-Fiber System:

I use this tripod from shooting documentaries to time lapsing to interviews, pretty much everything that involves run and gun. I love the rapid use and the fact that it has a separate strap attached to the tripod itself, it helps with moving from one location to another if on foot.
I haven't discovered any cons so far, but as far as pro's I have to say that the fluid is a huge step up in my shots. I have used all sorts of Manfrotto's and some Sachtlers, but the miller delivers a far more rugged design and much smoother and controllable motion. The only thing that you have to be aware is that you have to have the head locked in position when you change the numbers on either the pan, tilt or counter balance, but that is all specified in the manual.
I was initially undecided wether to get a Sachtler or the miller, but a LOT of research and the miller was the winner by far. Sachtler has putting a lot of cheap materials in their tripods in the last few years, maybe because of costs, but the prices are still up...so Milller it is (and do spend a little extra for the mounting accessories)

I use this with an FS100 with rails, follow focus, monitor, and heavy lenses. The head is smooth and adjustable to whatever the situation. The sticks are also very nice. They are more than stable enough for my kit and the max height is plenty for me as well. Thought about getting the more traditional dual tube style for video but decided to try and keep things light as I do a lot of solo shooting. Overall build quality is superb. The bag is decent with a nice gel padded shoulder strap. Super happy with this purchase!

Tripod system is solid and so far easy to use. The tension controls are a little clunky in terms of -- setting them seems slightly imprecise. The settings sort of float in between numbers so it's not always easy to know if you're hitting a setting of "3" or "4" or something in the middle. But besides that, so far it seems to be doing exactly what I want of it.

Very fluid movement. The legs are a tiny bit more wobbly than I expected, probably due to its light weight. But still very usable. I recommend this to people who need to move the tripod often and need a relatively lighter set up. Not good for every day traveling though as it's still bulky and not so light that you can carry it along everywhere unnoticed (like a Gitzo!) I haven't yet figured out how the strap that comes with it can be used carry the tripod without its case! It's awkwardly balanced with the strap alone but the case is very good and handy.
Also, you can get down pretty low and shoot pretty low angles.

                        Comments about Miller 1833 Compass15 2-Stage Carbon-Fiber System:

Most likely you are arriving at this review after going down two paths: a) you've done your homework. You know what you're about to get yourself into, and are just looking for that extra nudge in the right direction. b) you are using my review as part of your research.

In either case, you have found yourself to the right place. I purchased the DS20, and found the lack of counterbalance a major problem. A problem that was clearly rectified with the Compass 15. This is a solid, fully customizable system.

Just today, I carted this exact system to the top of City Hall for a film I'm shooting. Not only was it nimble enough to accompany me up the narrow passages, but it was sturdy enough to allow me to get the shot amidst blustery conditions.

100% approve of this product, for price and quality.

We needed a very mobile tripod for our AF-100, that could do double duty with our hpx-500 in a pinch. At half the weight of our current tripod this will make backwoods scrambles much easier.

Really impressed with how smooth the head is. Very, very fluid, and you can really move around.

Looked at mixing the head with a different tripod, but in the end bought the system bc it seemed easier. Very happy.
