Took this on an extreme off-trail backpack trip and it performed great. It has a few minor scratches, but otherwise in perfect condition. Wish it had a panoramic head, I just used it as a monopod and pivoted the whole thing. With the legs on bottom, it adds a fair amount of swing weight when used as a hiking stick, but not so much that it was a problem for me. The legs loosened up a bit, but was a simple fix with the allen screw on bottom. Also, the velcro strap doesn't like water, but it still held. As others have noted, it's not real stable as a tripod, but considering the versatility and solid build of the unit, you can't go wrong.

Comments about Trek-Tech TrekPod II With MagMount Star:

This is a well-designed, well-made product. It functions perfectly for its intended purpose. The magnet holds my camera solidly, and for a quick shot, is an extremely fast way to set up. For more extended use, the clip provides extra security and peace of mind. If you need a proper, rock-steady tripod, this is not for you. But as a walking stick/monopod I find that I am much more likely to bring it along with me, and then I actually have it when I need it. The minitripod comes in handy in a variety of situations, but I would not rely on it in high winds or on rugged terrain. But then, you just use this as a monopod.

One small criticism: the previous version of this product (a friend owns one, so I've seen it up close) has a nicer cork handle, and more importantly, a full-sized proper cork top knob. The current version replaces these with foam and plastic parts, and in particular the knob is really just a cap that attached to the camera mount (rather than completely replacing it as before). I knew this before I purchased, so I'm not going to take off a star from my overall rating, but it's too bad they downgraded this one feature to save a few pennies of production cost on an otherwise excellent product.

I am a wedding photographer and this allows my assistant easy movement with the monopod and I can quickly switch to tripod for very low-light shots. It is light, easy and perfect. The only thing I'm not crazy about is the height adjustment...it can be a bit sticky.

Comments about Trek-Tech TrekPod II With MagMount Star:

The TrekPod was purchased for a trip involving air travel so that heavier tripods could be left at home. The tripod legs at the bottom of the monopod worked great and performed as expected. The weak link in the setup for us is the ball head. The quick release plate would loosen in the vertical position when supporting a full frame camera body with a 100-300 zoom lens. However, it was still better than hand-holding or packing tripods in the luggage. We intend to see if we can replace the ball head with one that is sturdier. It would work very well with point and shoots and light weight cameras. The TrekPod II is recommended with understanding of it's limitations.

On a family vacation to Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks, I used the TrekPod II on several hikes. It worked great for the hikes and setting up the many photo opportunities. The tripod set up easy and conviently. The only problem I had was the magnetic attachment that went on my camera kept working loose. Overall, I would purchase again.
