The AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens from Nikon is a sharp, versatile, and durable telephoto zoom lens with a fast constant maximum aperture, useful in lowlight situations. A workhorse of a lens used by professionals and amateurs alike it is ideal for photojournalism, sports, and wildlife photography and is effective for almost all telephoto applications, including portraiture. An FX format lens, it can also be mounted and used on DX format DSLRs.

The innovative Vibration Reduction (VR II) system minimizes image blur caused by camera shake allowing handheld telephoto shooting even in poorly lit conditions. It offers the equivalent of 3.5 shutter speed stops faster than what the camera is set for. Its Internal Focus System provides fast autofocus without extending the lens and the Silent Wave AF Motor enables quiet and smooth focus adjustment. Full time manual focus override allows for precise manual focus at anytime and the minimum focus distance throughout the zoom range is 4.6' (1.4 m).

Seven extra-low dispersion lens elements minimize chromatic aberration and Nano Crystal Coating reduces ghosting and flare. In addition, Nikon's multilayer Super Integrated Lens Coating minimizes reflections in the wider wavelength range for improved color and clarity. Suited for use in difficult conditions, the lens is weather-sealed with a rubber mount seal and includes a detachable tripod foot and lens hood.

Fast f/2.8 Maximum Aperture and Practical Focal Length Range

I already had high expectations for this lens based upon all the other reviews I read so I would have expected to maybe be a little disapointed by reality vs. what I'd built up in my mind. I wasn't! I used it for the first time to photograph my son's baseball game and found that I couldn't take a bad picture with it; everything was sharp and captured the action beautifully. The bokeh is pleasing as well.My arm got tired quickly trying to carry the bulk of the lens around, it's a beast, but I'm not complaining. I expected it to be big and heavy and I'm perfectly willing to carry it around in exchange for the complete awesomeness that it produces.I've never been able to get so close to the action before, so intimate with the subjects, or been able to capture the candid moments (that would have required me to be closer) therby ruining the moment).LOVE LOVE LOVE this lens.

The three stars are a warning. This is the most agonizing lens I have ever owned. First, the good news. The image quality is superb. The autofocus on my D700 is dead on perfect. Color, contrast, and bokeh are all outstanding, with good sharpness at 2.8. The lens is a joy to use, quick and responsive, and the updated VR is excellent. I've made great shots handheld at 1/15 sec. which I never thought would be possible. This is a great improvement over the older version. Now the bad news. If you want tight head shots, forget it. Nikon has played a clever trick on us. At a working distance of 6 feet with the lens set at 200mm, the actual focal length is shortened to about 140mm. At 10 feet, its about 160mm. You can look it up, this information is all over the internet. You have to set focus over 35 feet away to get a true focal length of 200mm. By contrast, the older version of this lens only shortens to about 198mm. You have to decide for yourself whether or not this is a deal breaker for you. More importantly, my current copy is the third one I tried. I had to return two others to get one that worked right. The others produced images with noticeable blur along the right edge, and had a hot spot in the center (thank Lloyd Chambers for bringing this to everyone's attention). [...] In the end, I decided to keep the lens for its versatile zoom range. Besides, Nikon users just don't have any other options without going to third party lenses. I suggest that anyone considering this lens test it rigorously before accepting it.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

Coupled with the AF-S 24-70mm, I am able to cover 95% of my assignments with the two lenses. When ever I can choose, I prefer the AF-S 70-200mm for it's excellent resolution.Compared with it's Canon competitor, it falls just a little short in terms of sharpness at f2.8. Mounted on the D810, it does in the end outperform Canon. This might change though, but at the moment, Canon has less resolution + AA filter in their current DSLR lineup. It will be interesting to see if Canon ever catches up with Nikons superior output in terms of both resolution and dynamic range (I personally highly doubt it). This 70-200mm is not the most used lens of my kit, but my most consistent, sharp and capable lens coupled with the D810.

This lens is basically a must have lens IMO. Covers a wide range and at low light. I shoot a lot of nature stuff and this is always over my shoulder when i am carrying a bigger lens in case the action gets close. I have also used it for portrait work. I had the VR I lens, sold it to upgrade to this one for the faster focus.

I had purchased a 28 - 300 lens that I had hoped would do everything. Although a good lens, I could not get enough light in low light conditions and the pictures were a little soft. I purchased the 28 - 70mm 2.8 and loved it so much that I bought the 70 - 200mm 2.8 the next week. Great lens! Very happy with the purchase, I will be selling the 28 - 300mm soon.

Wells built. Like that all of the moving parts are inside the barrel (i.e. the barrel does not change length externally for the zoom).

I traded a Sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 lens in for this one because, while I use that lens for bird photography, I wasn't having much luck with its ability to focus quickly for birds in flight.I know that I sacrificed the 400mm focal length (great for birds) but the 70-200mm f/2.8 is superior in every way. Initially I bought it for birds in flight but I'm now seeing how versatile it is. I haven't had much practice with it because I've been busy but the photos that I've taken with this lens have been incredible. The focus is lightning fast and accurate; and the pictures are crisp. I just wish the price wasn't so high. This lens is heavy also but its definitely bearable.

This is a fantastic lens. Extremely sharp! So sharp that when I took some sample shots of my Wife sans any makeup she was horrified at the results. LOL This lens picked up every Blackhead on her face when magnified 100%The First thing she did was run to the store & buy some exfoliating scrub. LOLYou get the idea of the sharpness now right? This is a very well built heavily constructed Professional lens, so it it will feel heavy to some people if carried around all day. If your handholding your D810 with this lens and trying to shoot video for longer than 5 min. your arms will start to get a workout, at least you save some $$ on weights. LOL If you have the extra cash to spend buy this lens, you will not regret your purchase. The sales person from B&H was very helpful with my purchase of this lens. I use this lens for portraits and low light church and concert photography.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

This lens is incredibly sharp, fast, and built like a tank. It is perfect for event/wedding portrait shots. My only word of caution is to make sure you've got good support if you're looking to shoot fast moving subjects, especially with a D800/E or D810. Even with a fast shutter, you can catch slight motion blur from taking this heavy lens hand-held on really hi-res bodies. Fortunately, this lens has vibration reduction. If you can afford the price tag, you will not be disappointed. Must own for Photojournalists, and wedding/event photographers.

I had heard great things about this lens. They were all true. The focusing is quick and sharp. The bokeh is very pleasant. It is a bit heavy, but it is worth the effort.

I got this lens after being on the fence for a very long time because of the price. But when I decided to move up to FX with Nikon 810 I took the shot and am so glad I did this is my favorite go to lens it might be a bit heavy for some but the advantages far exceed the weight. Wish I had got this long ago.
