A workhorse of a lens used by professionals and amateurs alike it is ideal for photojournalism, sports, and wildlife photography and is effective for almost all telephoto applications, including portraiture. An FX format lens, it can also be mounted and used on DX format DSLRs.

Full time manual focus override allows for precise manual focus at anytime and the minimum focus distance throughout the zoom range is 4.6' (1.4 m).

Seven extra-low dispersion lens elements minimize chromatic aberration and Nano Crystal Coating reduces ghosting and flare. In addition, Nikon's multilayer Super Integrated Lens Coating minimizes reflections in the wider wavelength range for improved color and clarity. Suited for use in difficult conditions, the lens is weather-sealed with a rubber mount seal and includes a detachable tripod foot and lens hood.

I already had high expectations for this lens based upon all the other reviews I read so I would have expected to maybe be a little disapointed by reality vs. what I'd built up in my mind. I wasn't! I used it for the first time to photograph my son's baseball game and found that I couldn't take a bad picture with it; everything was sharp and captured the action beautifully. The bokeh is pleasing as well.My arm got tired quickly trying to carry the bulk of the lens around, it's a beast, but I'm not complaining. I expected it to be big and heavy and I'm perfectly willing to carry it around in exchange for the complete awesomeness that it produces.I've never been able to get so close to the action before, so intimate with the subjects, or been able to capture the candid moments (that would have required me to be closer) therby ruining the moment).LOVE LOVE LOVE this lens.

The three stars are a warning. This is the most agonizing lens I have ever owned. First, the good news. The image quality is superb. The autofocus on my D700 is dead on perfect. Color, contrast, and bokeh are all outstanding, with good sharpness at 2.8. The lens is a joy to use, quick and responsive, and the updated VR is excellent. I've made great shots handheld at 1/15 sec. which I never thought would be possible. This is a great improvement over the older version. Now the bad news. If you want tight head shots, forget it. Nikon has played a clever trick on us. At a working distance of 6 feet with the lens set at 200mm, the actual focal length is shortened to about 140mm. At 10 feet, its about 160mm. You can look it up, this information is all over the internet. You have to set focus over 35 feet away to get a true focal length of 200mm. By contrast, the older version of this lens only shortens to about 198mm. You have to decide for yourself whether or not this is a deal breaker for you. More importantly, my current copy is the third one I tried. I had to return two others to get one that worked right. The others produced images with noticeable blur along the right edge, and had a hot spot in the center (thank Lloyd Chambers for bringing this to everyone's attention). [...] In the end, I decided to keep the lens for its versatile zoom range. Besides, Nikon users just don't have any other options without going to third party lenses. I suggest that anyone considering this lens test it rigorously before accepting it.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

Haven't had this gem very long, and not used it a lot, yet ... read the reviews and all of them said this is "God's lens" ... I already had a 70-300mm, but looking for super clarity and sharpness, and that is evident, even after just a short time. So satisfied that I already sold the 70-300mm ... Looking forward to granddaughter's softball season to use it often and I'll review again when I get some "time" using it more ... I'm using on a Nikon D7100 (APS-C sensor ... NOT full-frame) ...

Simply the most amazing lens I have every used. Lightening fast focus. Beautiful bokeh. Ridiculous sharpness. Having f2.8 really helps in low light. You will wish you had bought it sooner once you have it. Save up for it. Worth every penny. Weighs a metric ton and is LONG. Like they said in Jaws..."you're going to need a bigger" bag. Had to move up to the Slingshot 302 from the 202. These cons are a small price to pay for perfection though. Combo'd with D750 you will get truly stunning results.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

This is a rare case where superlative specs translate into consistently high real-world results. Nearly every shot is bright, sharp, clear and in focus, with great contrast and minimal lens artifacts.

Some difficult tasks this lens has handled with ease:

Hummingbirds in low light. No problem. Focus is not always accurate due to the erratic nature of their motion, but a very high percentage of in-focus shots is possible (see attached image).

Fast-moving aircraft. No problem. Every shot is as sharp as can be (see attached image). The VR locks the image solid while panning.

Butterflies. Hardly anything is more difficult to photograph. You have about one second after one lands on a flower to compose, focus and shoot before it flitters away. Prior this lens, there was never a success, but now that once-in-lifetime shot is a reality.

While not a challenge and not the lens' forte, landscapes are rendered with unexpected clarity. Colors are bright, with full contrast, even at full zoom.

The only negative is that the tripod ring cannot be completely removed. There is always a knob and a square nub sticking out. No matter which way it is turned and locked down it always wants to snag on the camera bag.

Despite that one little thing, thus far, experiences with this lens have been overwhelmingly positive. It is highly recommended.

I use my gear mainly for professional work, but I also still have fun with personal photography projects too. This Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VRII lens when attached to my Nikon D600 is an excellent combination for capturing everything from the action at a sporting event to beautiful images of a family against the sunset or a young couple in love! The versatility of the f/2.8 aperture in low light situations, like at a High School Football game, allows for excellent results with sharpness and clarity that I was not able to achieve with my other zoom lenses (70-300 f/3.5-5.6) on this camera! I also ordered the Nikon D750 and received a substantial discount that made the purchase of these two amazing pieces of equipment that much sweeter! The staff at B&H were excellent to work with - knowledgeable and service oriented! The fast and free delivery was an extra bonus that I was not expecting! So, thank you B&H for helping to make my transaction excellent while helping me to save a substantial amount of money!

I purchased this for many reason. I haven't had anything with a decent reach for a while. I borrowed a 70-200 from a friend to shoot my sons football games this year and feel in love. I found this lens is fast and sharp as a prime. If you attach the teleconverter you can have some serious length. Taking this lens to a 140-400 and 210-600 if I switch to DX mode. This lens feels at home on my D800.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

I am not a professional, just someone who has been taking pictures as a hobby for a long time. Not too long ago, I decided that I would stop getting cheap gear and upgrading every couple of years, and made the decision to get some "real" glass. Wow, what a difference! I absolutely love the pictures I get out of this lens. I have it paired with my D750 and this just makes me feel good about shooting (and the results are fantastic, too!). I only have two extremely minor complaints about this lens: (1) It is very heavy. I like the flexibility of the zoom, though. If I didn't have need for the zoom, then perhaps a fixed focal length would be better. (2) This thing is BIG. I have to get a new camera bag because this one won't fit in my current one :)

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

I'm not sure what could be said that hasn't already. This is an amazing lens. Tack sharp, super fast focus, great in low light situations, solidly built, expectedly heavy, and worth every dollar. I'm still in the early stages of using it (with my D300), but I know I'm going to get years of satisfaction from this lens. Yes, it's expensive, but you get what you pay for - quality.

Great lens, good sharpness but something weird about the focal length when compared with older versions, which turn out to be better. The VR has issues in Normal mode should be working fine on monopod but does not. (Before you think you know that VR should not be used on a monopod, read the section of the manual again.)Built solid, should last forever.I wish the lens collar wasn't so close to the mounting, creates small problems for video plates.

Coupled with the AF-S 24-70mm, I am able to cover 95% of my assignments with the two lenses. When ever I can choose, I prefer the AF-S 70-200mm for it's excellent resolution.Compared with it's Canon competitor, it falls just a little short in terms of sharpness at f2.8. Mounted on the D810, it does in the end outperform Canon. This might change though, but at the moment, Canon has less resolution + AA filter in their current DSLR lineup. It will be interesting to see if Canon ever catches up with Nikons superior output in terms of both resolution and dynamic range (I personally highly doubt it). This 70-200mm is not the most used lens of my kit, but my most consistent, sharp and capable lens coupled with the D810.

This lens is basically a must have lens IMO. Covers a wide range and at low light. I shoot a lot of nature stuff and this is always over my shoulder when i am carrying a bigger lens in case the action gets close. I have also used it for portrait work. I had the VR I lens, sold it to upgrade to this one for the faster focus.

I cannot imagine there could be a higher quality 70-200mm lens. This baby produces extremely good images, it is super nicely constructed, rugged, and a lot of fun to use.
