The AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens from Nikon is a sharp, versatile, and durable telephoto zoom lens with a fast constant maximum aperture, useful in lowlight situations. A workhorse of a lens used by professionals and amateurs alike it is ideal for photojournalism, sports, and wildlife photography and is effective for almost all telephoto applications, including portraiture. An FX format lens, it can also be mounted and used on DX format DSLRs.

The innovative Vibration Reduction (VR II) system minimizes image blur caused by camera shake allowing handheld telephoto shooting even in poorly lit conditions. It offers the equivalent of 3.5 shutter speed stops faster than what the camera is set for. Its Internal Focus System provides fast autofocus without extending the lens and the Silent Wave AF Motor enables quiet and smooth focus adjustment. Full time manual focus override allows for precise manual focus at anytime and the minimum focus distance throughout the zoom range is 4.6' (1.4 m).

Seven extra-low dispersion lens elements minimize chromatic aberration and Nano Crystal Coating reduces ghosting and flare. In addition, Nikon's multilayer Super Integrated Lens Coating minimizes reflections in the wider wavelength range for improved color and clarity. Suited for use in difficult conditions, the lens is weather-sealed with a rubber mount seal and includes a detachable tripod foot and lens hood.

Fast f/2.8 Maximum Aperture and Practical Focal Length Range

I use my gear mainly for professional work, but I also still have fun with personal photography projects too. This Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VRII lens when attached to my Nikon D600 is an excellent combination for capturing everything from the action at a sporting event to beautiful images of a family against the sunset or a young couple in love! The versatility of the f/2.8 aperture in low light situations, like at a High School Football game, allows for excellent results with sharpness and clarity that I was not able to achieve with my other zoom lenses (70-300 f/3.5-5.6) on this camera! I also ordered the Nikon D750 and received a substantial discount that made the purchase of these two amazing pieces of equipment that much sweeter! The staff at B&H were excellent to work with - knowledgeable and service oriented! The fast and free delivery was an extra bonus that I was not expecting! So, thank you B&H for helping to make my transaction excellent while helping me to save a substantial amount of money!

The three stars are a warning. This is the most agonizing lens I have ever owned. First, the good news. The image quality is superb. The autofocus on my D700 is dead on perfect. Color, contrast, and bokeh are all outstanding, with good sharpness at 2.8. The lens is a joy to use, quick and responsive, and the updated VR is excellent. I've made great shots handheld at 1/15 sec. which I never thought would be possible. This is a great improvement over the older version. Now the bad news. If you want tight head shots, forget it. Nikon has played a clever trick on us. At a working distance of 6 feet with the lens set at 200mm, the actual focal length is shortened to about 140mm. At 10 feet, its about 160mm. You can look it up, this information is all over the internet. You have to set focus over 35 feet away to get a true focal length of 200mm. By contrast, the older version of this lens only shortens to about 198mm. You have to decide for yourself whether or not this is a deal breaker for you. More importantly, my current copy is the third one I tried. I had to return two others to get one that worked right. The others produced images with noticeable blur along the right edge, and had a hot spot in the center (thank Lloyd Chambers for bringing this to everyone's attention). [...] In the end, I decided to keep the lens for its versatile zoom range. Besides, Nikon users just don't have any other options without going to third party lenses. I suggest that anyone considering this lens test it rigorously before accepting it.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

I'm so glad I invested in a quality lens. The pictures produced by this lens are amazing. It has helped take my photography to a new level. It is a little on the heavy side but not as heavy as I was concerned about from reading reviews. I don't see this as a typical walk-around lens, though I have done so on occasion. The constant max aperture is such a great feature to have.
I'll no longer look for the cheapest lenses. Always look for quality and save up if you need to!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

I knew I've always wanted this lens based on good reviews, but I decided to start my collection with primes first, then the 24-70mm 2.8, a 105mm macro, and then this one. I rented it for an important wedding and I MUST buy it immediately! The compression is like no other! I mean it, compare it to any lens with an f-stop of 1.8 and this one at 2.8/200mm is just as beautiful! Talk about creamy bokeh. The good outweighs the bad, however I will say that aside from it being tremendously heavy in addition to my D810 and flash, some images may appear blurry at 200mm camera not held steady (even with vibration reduction). Just the nature of the zoom. Master that and gain a little arm muscle, and you'll never want to take this off your camera!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

I am so happy with this lens and the portrait performance wide open at f/2.8; it does a great job at separating the subject from all else. After my initial review, I had an opportunity my first week with this lens to quickly capture the two attached images just using a single softbox. Next time, I will be using a three-light setup.

This lens will get a LOT of use over the years!

I just received this lens last week. I belong to two very active MeetUp photography groups in the Chicago area. Each group often plans multiply photography events each week of the year. I received recommendations from members on the versatility and outstanding performance of this lens. After reading much about it, I added this lens to my collection. Below is one of the first photographs (a self portrait) I took with this lens while becoming familiar with my new Bowens Gemini 500Pro 2-Light Studio Kit I also purchased from B&H the same week. These are two images of the same photograph; the first shows the entire, downsized image while the other is a crop section of the same photograph showing the detail this lens delivers.

Quality, durable and reliable. This is a fantastic lens to work with. Beautiful clear sharp images. Personally i like the weight and balance. VRII does a great job. One important thing to note - only at your closest focus setting 4.6' (1.40 m) you will get wider than 200mm coverage. In close quarter fast action shooting this proves to a asset for me. You have to be the judge. Focas is alway fast and accurate on the D810, Df, D4s and D750.

After reviewing several lenses for in and outdoor sports I got the one I wanted. This is an awesome lens, a most have lens. Getting used to it's weight is easy when you realize how sharp and quite fast it is, it's an extraordinary lens in terms of performance and build quality. As said image quality is exceptionally sharp and the bokeh is very smooth. Pricy but well worth it.

Haven't had this gem very long, and not used it a lot, yet ... read the reviews and all of them said this is "God's lens" ... I already had a 70-300mm, but looking for super clarity and sharpness, and that is evident, even after just a short time. So satisfied that I already sold the 70-300mm ... Looking forward to granddaughter's softball season to use it often and I'll review again when I get some "time" using it more ... I'm using on a Nikon D7100 (APS-C sensor ... NOT full-frame) ...

Simply the most amazing lens I have every used. Lightening fast focus. Beautiful bokeh. Ridiculous sharpness. Having f2.8 really helps in low light. You will wish you had bought it sooner once you have it. Save up for it. Worth every penny. Weighs a metric ton and is LONG. Like they said in Jaws..."you're going to need a bigger" bag. Had to move up to the Slingshot 302 from the 202. These cons are a small price to pay for perfection though. Combo'd with D750 you will get truly stunning results.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

It is one of the best nikon lens that I have ever used. I am calling it PKT, I had a good expectation before getting this lens. I am so excited to have this gun on my gear D810.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens:

This is a rare case where superlative specs translate into consistently high real-world results. Nearly every shot is bright, sharp, clear and in focus, with great contrast and minimal lens artifacts.

Some difficult tasks this lens has handled with ease:

Hummingbirds in low light. No problem. Focus is not always accurate due to the erratic nature of their motion, but a very high percentage of in-focus shots is possible (see attached image).

Fast-moving aircraft. No problem. Every shot is as sharp as can be (see attached image). The VR locks the image solid while panning.

Butterflies. Hardly anything is more difficult to photograph. You have about one second after one lands on a flower to compose, focus and shoot before it flitters away. Prior this lens, there was never a success, but now that once-in-lifetime shot is a reality.

While not a challenge and not the lens' forte, landscapes are rendered with unexpected clarity. Colors are bright, with full contrast, even at full zoom.

The only negative is that the tripod ring cannot be completely removed. There is always a knob and a square nub sticking out. No matter which way it is turned and locked down it always wants to snag on the camera bag.

Despite that one little thing, thus far, experiences with this lens have been overwhelmingly positive. It is highly recommended.

I purchased this for many reason. I haven't had anything with a decent reach for a while. I borrowed a 70-200 from a friend to shoot my sons football games this year and feel in love. I found this lens is fast and sharp as a prime. If you attach the teleconverter you can have some serious length. Taking this lens to a 140-400 and 210-600 if I switch to DX mode. This lens feels at home on my D800.
