The AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II Lens from Nikon is a one-lens solution for DX-format DSLRs. Its wide angle to telephoto focal range with the 35mm focal length equivalence of 27-300mm gives photographers a versatile tool to get the shot without having to switch lenses. It is engineered with superior quality ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements yielding sharpness and color correction without distortion, even at wide apertures. Additionally, this zoom is constructed with three aspherical lens elements and a circular 7-blade diaphragm which renders captured images with natural-looking out-of-focus elements. NIkon's Super Integrated Lens Coating enhances light transmission through the lens and reduces flare and ghosting.

VR (Vibration Reduction) II image stabilization compensates against the blur caused by camera shake and allows shooting up to 3.5 shutter speed stops slower than with non-VR II lenses. This enables handheld shooting at telephoto lengths and in low light with less blur. The internal focusing (IF) lens incorporates Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) to provide smooth, silent, fast and accurate auto focusing. Autofocus (A) or manual (M) modes can easily be selected with a focus mode switch, and manual override function allows the shooter to manually focus even in AF mode.

With 11x zoom versatility this one-lens solution covers a broad range of photographic opportunities. Picture angle is the equivalent of a 27-300mm lens in the 35mm format.
Nikon VR II (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization, engineered specifically for each VR NIKKOR lens, enables handheld shooting at up to 3.5 shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible, assuring dramatically sharper images.
Two Extra-low Dispersion (ED) elements offers superior sharpness and color correction by effectively minimizing chromatic aberration, even at wide aperture settings.
Three aspherical lens elements eliminate coma and other aberrations, even at wide apertures.
Nikon's Super Integrated Coating (SIC) enhances light transmission and offers superior color consistency and reduced flare.
Built with Nikon's exclusive Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM), the lens enables fast, accurate and quiet autofocus.
With a rounded 7-blade diaphragm a more natural appearance of out-of-focus image elements are rendered.
A zoom lock switch secures lens barrel at its minimum length.
This 18-200mm lens provides a minimum focus distance of 19.7".
The M/A (Manual/Autofocus) mode switch enables quick response to changing situations between manual and autofocus operation.
The included HB-35 petal-type lens hood shades the lens from unwanted, image-degrading light and provides a degree of protection against impact and the elements.

When I received this lens, I immediately compared it to my 18~55mm lens that came with my Nikon D5100 canera, and my AFS Nikkor55~300mm 1:4.5-5.6G ED DX lens. It was comparable in clarity and sharpness at 18mm and 55mm when compared to my stock lens. At 200mm, when compared to 200mm on my existing zoom lens, I had mixed results. When shooting at a typed sheet of paper at a distance of 12 feet; the old lens produced a sharpter image of fine text, the new lens seemed to be just slightly out of focus. In outside shots, also at 200mm, the 18~200mm lens produced comparable results (sharp images) and was able to focus correctly every time. The old zoom lens was not consistent, and was sometimes slightly out of focus. So, overall, I am pleased with the lens. This lens is able to focus much closer than my old zoom lens. One really odd thing happened; shooting outside at distant objects, at 200mm the new lens matched the field of view of the older zoom lens, and also a 70-300mm lens set to 200mm. However, when shooting the test at 12 feet, the new lens at 200mm had a field of view that was equal to about 150mm on the other lenses. It's as if the focal length varies from the markings on the lens, when shooting at close distances. Also related to this inconsistancy, when shooting inside at 12~15ft distance, the 18~200mm lens provided a slightly wider field of view than the stock lens when both were set at 18mm. Id say it was about 10% wider.

I have owned the original version of this lens for over a year. The only problem with it was the zoom creep. The Nikon press announcement for this upgrade specifically indicated it employed an all new zoom mechanism to prevent zoom creep. The only change I can see is the lock at 18mm -- but I don't think anyone ever reported a problem with the lens creeping away from 18mm. The creep problem is between 35-150 or so -- and while this new model does seem somewhat more stiff zooming between 35-150, the copy I got will still creep out if set to 50 and the camera is left to hang naturally from the strap [no shaking necessary].

I was also looking forward to the improved contrast from the improved coatings also noted in the press announcement. In a/b comparisons with my original 18-200, I couldn't detect any difference -- even comparing histograms. Not to say it isn't better -- I just couldn't see it as better.

The one thing I did detect with the new model [I hope just a problem with the copy I got] was that out-of-focus pinpoint light sources are not circular, but rather, tear drop shaped. My original version, while not the best bokeh, is at least symmetric in this regard -- yes, somewhat darker in the center of the circles than at the edges, but at least symmetric. This is really annoying on high contrast out of focus horizontal lines which due to the uneven bokeh, appear to have ghosts drifting above them, as though the camera or object moved during the exposure. [Yes, VR was off for all these on-tripod, shutter-delay-on comparisons.]

I am somewhat surprised to see a re-design with this little impact.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II Lens:

This is a good lens. It is only good and not great or wonderful becuase of the following: Yes it is heavy and takes sometime to get used to the weight. In its defense it does 'feel' lighter after using it a few times.
My lens is slow to react in focusing and I have been unable to determine why. It seems slow for different stationary subjects.
The vibration reduction feature has multiple choices and can be a pain to remember where you set it last. I'm not sure the feature is needed but I have not taken comparative shots to determine.
The entire set up of the lens is not designed ( in my opinion) for speed so using it for sports shots might be less than satisfying.
On the good side the shots for the most part have been sharp at all the respective distances. And it is an 'all-in-one' lens, which by-iteslf eliminates or reduces some of the negatives

I use the lens for landscapes, wildlife and family. It's easy to use and works great. It's a bit heavy, but if I carry it with the strap on my shoulder rather than around my neck I don't notice the weight.

It's my new walk around lens. It's sharp and not not too heavy.

The one downside is that you must remove the lens hood to extend the lens.

Very pleased with this lens. I bought it before a once-in-a-lifetime trip, and used it exclusively. It allowed me to get the shots I wanted while quickly shifting from sunny landscapes to shady castle ruins to cathedral interiors to close-up candids. Versatile and fun to use.

It works out very well for beginners.
To be honest, it's not good for indoor shooting without a flash.
My next purchase will be fixed 50mm f/1.8

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II Lens:

I use his lens mainly for landscape and candid portrait work. I do most of my work on the coast of the north shore of Long Island. I need a lens with good mid range and the 18-200 fits the bill, It produces sharp images at all focal lenghts. On the down side it's a little heavy with my D7100 Nikon but saves me from carrying two three lenses

one lens that takes away the pain of changing the 18-55 and then 55-300.
                        great for families.

so far i've used it only a few times ... its sharp, fast focus, gr8 build quality kindda what you would expect form NIkon, only issue i've seen right now is a click moment its done focusing .. not sure if this is how its suppose to be .. but no big deal ... read a lot of reviews talking about lens creep ... haven't noticed that yet on my lens

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II Lens:

Excellent lens! It covers everything from 18mm (Wide) all the way to 200mm (Zoom). I never truly realized how much I enjoy shooting wide until I purchased a Nikon 35mm Prime Lens. Primes are great, but you are limited on how close you can get before having physically move your feet. The 18-200mm gives you a nice close-up zoom and a respectable wide to get that extra sense of "space" & "size". It's not too heavy and works well with a Nikon D7100.

I'm an amateur DSLR photographer, who loves to take photos, but does not like carrying multiple lens.
This Nikkor 18-200 mm is just right for me.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II Lens:

This is a great all around versatile lens for my Nikon 5100, I really wish I had gotten this right away, instead of the 18-55 & 55-200 package.
Having to bring the other lens, and change it at some times wasn't convienent at all.
And I was worried this lens wouldn't take as good a pictures, but I did some tests and I think the pictures with the 18-200 lens are better than the other two.
My only con so far having used it for a couple of weeks is that its a bit heavy, it has to be with all the extra glass, but it will take a little getting used to.
