After using inexpensive led lights clipped on the brim of my hat for nightly farm chores as well as for doing preflights on the helicopter I fly, I finally decided I needed a light I could easily aim as well as adjust the brightness. I looked at Petzl lights and others but failed to find anyting that really stood out.

When I got the email ad from SureFire for the St. Minimus, my curiosity was piqued. I own a SureFire A2L which is a great light. The St. Minimus is made in much the same fashion, with a machined aluminum body that will aim up or down infinitely as well as adjust brightness from very dim to extremely bright. You can read the numbers in the spec sheet but the light is bright enough for me to use when carting horse manure from the barn, up the trail, into the woods where we store it. I can turn it up and see details several hundred feet away - well enough to avoid the occasional skunk or deer. When preflighting the helicopter, it keeps both my hands free to open cowlings or hold onto hand holds while peering into compartments. The light goes where I point my head. It really makes checking out a transmission compartment on top of a Bell 412 or an EC 135 a lot easier.

I am still not completely sold on the CR-123A batteries. I wish I had the capability of using rechargeable NiMH batteries. If I had gone with the Minimus with the larger battery pack, that would have been an option. But the added weight and harnessing were not things I wanted. So far, the battery life with the 123 seems to be pretty good but I will have to use the light longer to really know.

If you want a bombproof, versatile, functional headlamp that should last as long as you want to use a headlamp, the St. Minimus sure looks like it is at the head of the pack. It's not cheap. But like most things SureFire, it is beautifully made and thoughtfully executed.

I own several different SureFire products for different occasions. I recently bought a Minimus headlamp, and, like all my other SureFire products, is built to last. I use it when jogging at night, or when working outside after dark. I really enjoy the light output of the lamp--it's bright when you need it, and you can adjust the brightness down when you don't need a high output. I also purchased a Petzl XP2 around the same time--it's not as bright as the SureFire, but does have a couple advantages. The only two things that irk me about the Minimus are that it eats through batteries (runs on a single CR123 battery) compared to the Petzl (uses 3xAAA, lasts longer though isn't as bright). Secondly, when the Minimus light output goes below a certain amount, the light begins to flash incessantly--this is designed to let you know the battery is low, though it's pretty easy to tell batteries are dying when the light keeps getting dimmer. The Petzl will just get dark--so dark that it is barely usable, but at least it doesn't flash. The Minimus is very light, comfortable, and worth getting, but know that you'll need lots of batteries.

Comments about SureFire HS2-A Minimus Variable-Output LED Headlamp:

I really like this light. I use it for work, camping and home projects. It is a little bigger than I was expecting. Not bad, though. I knew this going into it, but it is only 100 lumens. Which is a lot. But for the price, I was hoping they would cram a lot more into this thing. It's still plenty bright with a nice beam.

Overall a great headlamp. Purchased to use while camping but found it extremely useful around the house. Nice even bright light with little to no distortion. Wish there were a more distinct detent/click when rotated to the off position.

I bought this light for walking my dog and skate skiing at night. The light is comfortable and reasonably bright with an excellent field of view and light dispersion characteristics. I only wish the batteries lasted longer but that is the trade off for having a light with little weight. I would definitely buy one again.

Comments about SureFire HS2-A Minimus Variable-Output LED Headlamp:

I purchased this headlamp for use around the house, hiking, and for riding at night with my bike. I have a couple of other SureFire products, and have high expectations for the brand. The Minimus doesn't disappoint--the beam is bright and wide, and is bright enough for any task I have. The beam projects enough light to illuminate immediately in front of me on the bike, but doesn't throw enough focused light to be perfect for biking (but it's not really made for that anyways). Otherwise, the light is great. It stays on my head firmly even as I move around, and doesn't feel uncomfortable even after wearing it for 30+ minutes. The included red filter is useful for nighttime reading, and while I hope to never need it the SOS feature of the light may prove very useful at some point. I also own a [*], and find that it boasts better features (flash mode) but the plastic housing isn't nearly as durable as the aluminum casing of the Minimus.

This is my third Surefire product, (the others are a G2X Pro and a G2 Nitrolon, which spent 2 years with me on a sailboat in southeast Alaska). The headlamp is comfortable with a powerful 100 lumen light that may be dialed down to only 1 lumen. Range of adjustment allows for working or traveling in dark, tough, conditions or just reading in the tent. Extremely strong case. Very simple, intuitive controls. You won't be disappointed.

Excellent Surefire build and craftsmanship and comfortable to wear. Light is more flood than spot and not quite as smooth and artifact free as my Surefire G2 Nitrolon. The variable output will be handy and works great.
Only complaint I have is when turning the battery compartment to adjust the direction of beam up or down, it turns a little stiff. It may loosen up over time. It's a two-handed ordeal as of now.

The saint minimus is very light and small. The light intensity can be easily controlled with one single knob. The included red light filter is very good for astronomy (reading charts, etc.). I mainly use the headlamp for automotive use and have found it to be an excellent addition to my tool box.

Comments about SureFire HS2-A Minimus Variable-Output LED Headlamp:

I've used several headlamps and this is by far the best. First, I really like the ability to adjust from 0 to 100 lumens. Most headlamps give you 2, maybe 3 different brightness levels. Also, it's great that it has an SOS distress beacon that switches on separately from the adjustment knob. I like that there is not a big battery pack with a cable at the back of my head, too. Initially I was only going to give this 4 stars, as I found the angle adjustment frustrating, because when I'd try to angle the light upward the battery cap would unscrew. However, once you've adjusted the beam angle up and down a few times, it loosens up and as long as the battery cap is on tight it will not unscrew. All in all, this is a fantastic light!

Comments about SureFire HS2-A Minimus Variable-Output LED Headlamp:

I'm an avid hiker and photographer. Many times I start or finish hikes in the dark and use this headlamp to find my way in the woods.

It's incredibly sturdy, bright, easy and simple to use and reliable.

I can't think of anything I don't like about it except for the fact that I wish all surefire flashlights had continuous power control from 0 lumens to their max like this does. I love that feature.

Comments about SureFire HS2-A Minimus Variable-Output LED Headlamp:
