I recently did a test comparing all the fine art papers from Hahnemühle, Canson, Epson, Moab and Museo — over fifty different papers in total. I'm not going to claim that my tests are definitive or even objective. My goal was finding the best paper for printing my work. In the category of Smooth Matte papers (which I use the most), Hot Press Bright beat Canson Infinity Rag Photograpique by a hair, probably because this paper has OBAs (optical brightening agents). (Canson wins against Hot Press Natural but only he narrowest of margins).

There is a lot of FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt) in the market about OBAs and their impact on image longivity. You'll often hear something like "… this paper has no OBA, which are known to (negatively) impact image longivity". While this may be true in general, it's not always true. Look at the Wilhelm Research ratings for Espon papers with UltraChrome K3 Pigment inks (Pro 3880, etc). When a print is displayed under UV filtered glass, Epson has two papers that are rated in excess of 200 years (UPPP Luster and Watercolor Radiant White) - both of which use OBAs.

On to the paper: very good sharpness, good reds (always a problem for matte papers), exceptional blacks (another problem area) and very good overall contrast. You're not going to get the kind of Dmax that you would with a glossy paper, but it's pretty close. At 330 gsm, it's one of the heaviest matte papers out there, which for me is a good thing.

I would definitely recommend using the front feeder to print on this paper so that you get a straight paper path. In my testing, 330+ gms papers are prone to ink problems at the end of the print if you send them through the rear feeder.

I purchased Epson Hot Press Bright White after reading glowing reviews and watching promotional videos that praised it's d-max and claimed rich, deep blacks and a gamut close to Premium Luster. But in testing this paper on an Epson 3880 printer with Epson profiles, I found poor performance in shadows, and no match to Premium Luster.Initial tests showed "muddy" shadows and a general foggy image. More detailed test with step wedge images showed that the paper is unable to handle RGB values below the 30 to 40 range. The paper clips significantly below this range, and shadow detail is lost. The paper performs well on medium to high key images, but is unsuitable for images with significant low key shadows. Strangely, the Epson promotional videos by famous photographers contain samples of some very low key images. Don't be misled by them, as I was.I documented my experience here[@]

We use hot press for many of our fine art prints. Any image where the texture of cold press would be a problem will be printed on hot press bright or natural. These papers are heavy and have real substance to them. They have nice smooth surfaces and show the color very well.

Hot press bright has a great tonal range and a smooth surface while still a fine art - as opposed to photograhic - paper. No paper is 5 stars there is always more to see than what's in a print

If you know this product, you know it's available widely and what you're getting. Paper is paper, but you need to get the right stuff. The point of this writing is the B&H difference.
I am in Los Angeles, but you'd think from the way it was packed that I lived on Mars. The packaging was solid, secure, professional, and with obvious regard for the condition of the product and my need to have it arrive in good order. 15 stars for packing and delivery!!

This paper has a real nice weight to it and feels hefty in the hand. The matte finish is quite nice, and it doesn't seem too fragile to me (but I'm careful with it nonetheless). It's bright, but it's not white. I print a lot of winter minimalist shots with pure white snow in them, and I would like it even more if this paper were whiter yet. But the slight warm cast isn't a problem on other shots, or even on some snow shots if they aren't side by side with a whiter paper. I've had no issues with jamming or anything like that. Colors look good, and for whatever reason, prints on this paper come out matching exactly what my monitor shows. Other papers I use require tiny amounts of "interpolation" to get prints to match the monitor precisely.

Perfect color and density. I love the finish. It handles well and is perfectly consistent.

This is the best fine art matte paper anyone has yet produced. It works great with even older printers with the Ultrachrome Ink. Great results from my six year old Epson 4000.
