Designed for pros and semi-pros alike, the Canon EOS 7D is a high-performance digital SLR, that features the resolving power of an 18-megapixel APS-C format CMOS sensor and dual DIGIC 4 image processors that enable 8 frames-per-second capture of high-definition, low-noise imaging at sensitivity levels up to ISO 12800. It accepts lenses with EF or EF-S mounts.
In addition to high-definition still images the Canon EOS 7D can also capture true HD 1080p video at 30 frames per second. Video clips can be up to 12 minutes in length or 4GB in size, and you can make full use of all Canon EF and EF-S-mount lenses, which enables an exceptional range of creative visual possibilities. And to ensure clean, blemish-free image files, the 7D employs a dual dust-reduction system.
The EOS 7D's Intelligent Viewfinder enables 100% viewing of the total image area, and features a transparent LCD overlay option that enables advanced data display within the optical viewfinder including user-selected AF modes, a spot metering circle, and on-demand grid lines. In addition to the 7D's optical viewfinder a Live View mode enables you to compose, review, and edit images using the camera's 3", 920,000-dot TFT LCD. The 7D also features a Dual Axis Electronic Level and tilt display that enables you to adjust the roll and pitch of the camera in 1° increments, using the viewfinder or LCD.
For continuous shooting sequences, the 7D can capture bursts of up to 126 JPEGs (large) when using UDMA CF memory cards, or 15 when shooting RAW files. An enhanced all cross-type 19-point autofocus system enables extremely accurate AI Servo AF subject tracking and user-selectable AF modes for precise focusing. For metering stills and video, the 7D features a new 63-zone iFCL metering system that takes focus and color data into consideration when establishing exposure times.
The Canon EOS 7D is constructed out of rugged magnesium-alloy and is sealed against dust and weather. The 7D's shutter is equally rugged and tested for up to 150,000 exposure cycles. Images can be recorded to Type I and II, UDMA-compliant CompactFlash cards in either sRGB or Adobe RGB, and you can expect up to 800 exposures per charge using the camera's rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
In addition to a number of different recording size and frame rate modes, the EOS 7D enables easy manual control of exposure, focus and Live View features and even allows for in-camera editing. The large CMOS sensor and compatibility with over 60 lenses provide a wealth of depth-of-field options. And it's all as easy as the press of a button - the EOS 7D has a dedicated Live View/Movie Recording lever with a start/stop button that gets the shooting started fast.
Full HD Video is captured at 1920 x 1080 resolution at 30p (29.97), 24p (23.976) or 25p frames per second, for up to 4GB per clip. Movies are saved as .MOV files and can be viewed in Full HD with HDMI output. Other recording sizes include HD at 1280 x 720 (50p / 60p (59.94) fps) or SD/VGA at 640 x 480 (50p / 60p (59.94) fps).
Display options include: grid, spot metering, AF points display, hide all, zone AF, spot (single-point) AF, AF point expansion and Dual Axis Electronic Level display. The EOS 7D also features a brilliant new Dual Axis Electronic Level and tilt display that aids in achieving perfectly level shots, displaying both roll and pitch in 1° increments, either in the viewfinder or on the LCD.
In addition, Canon's Light Source detection AF automatically compensates the focus by taking into account artificial lighting sources and making appropriate adjustments and the EOS 7D's new Intelligent Macro focusing tracks the object or the cameras movement when shooting close-up, to ensure focus is never lost. AF modes can be customized to suit the situation, ensuring reliable focus, every time.
Since the metering sensor has a color measurement function, exposure errors and focus errors caused by different light sources are minimized; the EOS 7D gives stable exposure from shot to shot in situations where light changes, such as in a theater or concert hall. This makes the EOS 7D ideal for scenes with extreme difference in brightness such as brightly lit scenes or backlit scenes; the camera balances exposure of the main subject at the background, and exposures are not overly influenced by bright areas in the shot.

I was hestitant to purchase this due to negative reviews on internet regarding focus issues. When I received the camera, I tested the focus first out of the box. Yes it was soft. I called regarding returning it, and B&H rep was willing to do this, but refered me to the tech department first. I explained the problem and Rob the tech guru explained about the micro adjustment on the camera which enables you to micro tune focus to any lens. If you have a camera and lens at the same end of tolerance when they leave the factory this can happen. Bottom line, I used a twenty dollar bill, a tripod and the self timer set to 10 seconds, and after about two hours work, I set micro adjustment to Plus 4, and have a crisp clean sharp focus. This camera will allow you to fine tune to any lens and the camera will remember it. I use this for birding, so feathers are what it's all about. I have not been disappointed. Add blistering fast frame rate at 8 per second and this is one great action/wildlife camera. It's a bit noisy at higher ISO's as with any of the crop sensor cameras. One con is the CF card. While really fast with the new pro 1000x, they are quite spendy and at 8 frames going full tilt, you need the fastest cards. It will go continuously for about 4 seconds shooting full RAW files, then lag. Buffer clears in about 2 seconds. Haven't tried JPG's yet

My wife raved for weeks about pictures she was viewing on Facebook that were posted by a number of photographers in Florida. She kept saying, and they shot these with a 7D and a 500 mm lens or a 7D and my (her) lens (the 100-400 mm f/4.5-5.6). I never get pictures like that. So, I bought her the camera and we've been using it for about 2 weeks...and she's still not getting photos "like that" and neither am I. But, that is mostly due to the lousy lighting conditions here in southwest Ohio as compared to those in central and southern Florida.
- Most useful or most welcome features for us so far are
-- 1.6x crop factor delivered by the sensor, which is smaller than what we have been shooting for the last 1-2 years (5D Mark II and 1D Mark IV). Coupled with my 300 mm f/2.8 and 2x extender II or 2x extender III, the subjects we shoot (hawks, owls, eagles, and many common birds) are significantly larger in the viewfinder and in the final photo.
-- New design of the autofocus sensors as well as the additional sensors available over the 5D Mark II and the accuracy of that focus (at least in good light) versus the 5D Mark II (not as good as the 1D Mark IV)
- Trade-offs versus 5D Mark II and 1D Mark IV are
-- Smaller sensor results in significantly more noise in dark subjects and in low-light or when using "higher" ISOs (even 500 and 640 are not nearly as good as the other two cameras)
-- Image quality at any ISO I've shot so far is not as good as the 5D Mark II or the 1D Mark IV in my humble opinion.
-- Extra magnification (crop factor) results in comparitively more shake when used with telephoto lenses; not only is the subject magnified, so are all movements of the user. (Hint: If you have any difficulty with image stability when hand-holding a telephoto lens, that "instability" will be significantly magnified when moving to a 1.6 crop factor sensor like that in the 7D.) If you already use a 1.6 crop-factor camera, you'll be right at home with the 7D.
Overall, my wife loves the camera for the autofocus sensors and even more so for the additional crop factor she gets with the 100-400 mm. I like it for the additional crop factor with my 300 f/2.8 and 1.4 or 1.6 extender, but I don't find the focusing or image quality to be on par with the 1D Mark IV. The 5D Mark II images are far superior as far as noise and overall color, but the 5D Mark II did/does have focusing issues.

Comments about Canon EOS 7D SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):
I am a professional outdoor photographer for a major workshop instruction company. I bought this camera a couple years ago to work alongside my full-frame 5Dmk1. It has excelled at being a complimentary camera to my full-frame. The 1.6x crop, 19AF points, upgraded firmware and ergonomics are awesome with standard and telephoto zoom lenses.
Doesnt perform as well in high ISO's than my 5Dmk1. If you truly want to use this camera as a landscape camera, buy a 5Dmk3, or mk2. I was a little disappointed with the quality of the images I was able to produce with the available super-wide 1.6x lenses on the market. They simply dont compare to the big 'L' boys. My 5Dmk3 is on order.
That being said, for the price, this is the BEST deal on the market today for the features it has, despite the drawbacks.

I am just an amateur that wanted a little more. I felt like I outgrew my Canon XSi which has been great for me for the past 5 years. Most of my uses are for landscapes, animals and kids sports. I also bought a Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 along with this camera. The combo is great! Camera is not too hard to use. A little more buttons than my Rebel XSi so it took a little getting used to. I've only used the video mode one time for a kids play with somewhat low lighting. Camera was mounted on a tripod and the video came out GREAT! A couple weeks later I am very confident that I have made a GREAT purchase.

I use the camera for bird photography. The difference between this and my xti is almost indescribable. Having just purchased and used it for one outing, I don't know much about it yet, but I absolutely love it so far. Of course, you should keep in mind that no camera can work at its full potential without a good lens. I recommend, if having to make a financial choice between a lens and a camera, start with a lens. So far I don't have any cons.

Just upgraded from a Rebel, and the 7D has been a great purchase so far. It was definitely time to upgrade and my only hesitation was an increase in size/weight since I use my camera often for travel and frequently carry it around all day long. This hasn't been a problem yet, and the sturdier build is a great benefit. It has been easy to learn/use and I've gotten some great pictures - now it's time to upgrage a lens or two!

I have had the camera for a few weeks and have taken pictures in several different settings. I have been very pleased with it in sporting events and action shots paired with my Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens. I thought about getting the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM, but decided I would upgrade later if necessary. For my action pictures (mostly kids sporting events) the 70-300 is perfect. For simple pictures the auto mode does the trick flawlessly. The Canon tech support line was fantastic at helping me make establish a few preset configurations for different shooting environments. The video quality is vrey good, but if you plan to shoot a lot of videos I might consider a camera that offers autofocus for video mode.

The 7d was bought with the Canon 28-135mm EF lens and a BG-E7 battery grip. I need the extra power when shooting the waterfalls and Lakes of central New York. Another thing is, I have large hands and it fits me to a tee. Still learning to make adjustments on the fly, But never rushed to complete a shoot because of a deadline. The large LCD screen helps to program settings at a glance. I have not found any cons as the 7d is new to me. It is a large upgrade from the Rebel xt.

Setting up for HDR shots was quite simple, registering the custom buttons was great. Every adjustment for shooting is at your finger tips. This may not be a full frame camera, but that is the only draw back. This camera just rules, it's my new work horse.

I am using this camera for sports photography and it is great. The weight takes a little getting used to but the pictures turn out amazing

I compared cameras for months. Then I agonized about this choice or the 5D and a few others. I'm thrilled with this camera. I take wildlife photos and this camera is a "machine gun". Shutter speed is awesome. Whether taking portraits or wildlife, the images are tack sharp with all my L series lens.

Went for the burst speed as the kids are involved in MMA and wrestling. Wow, the pic count adds up very fast with clarity using a 50mm 1.4 Canon lens.
