The EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens from Canon is the L-series version of Canon's popular 100mm Macro lens. As an L-series lens it offers the utmost in optical construction, including ultra-low dispersion lens elements and moisture and dustproof seal structure on the barrel. Its 100mm focal length is effective for portraiture and other telephoto applications and as a macro lens with 1:1 magnification and a 12" minimum focus distance, it is ideal for life-size close-up imaging.

The lens features Hybrid Optical Image Stabilization with up to 4-stops of shake control for effective low light capture and with the vibration gyro and acceleration sensor it compensates for both angular and shift camera shake during close-up shooting. An ultrasonic focus motor (USM) provides quick and quiet auto-focusing and full-time manual focus override enables precise manual focus eve in AF mode. A focus range limiting function offers three distance ranges to control the range in which the AF looks for focus, thus reducing focusing time. Internal focus system means that the barrel does not extend when focusing, which is crucial when shooting macro.

This lens includes a dedicated lens hood and is compatible with an optional Canon tripod collar and Canon Macro Ring Lite.

Tele-Macro Focal Length
The convenient 100mm focal length of the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens allows for a comfortable shooting distance between the camera and subject, and less chance of shadow interference when shooting at closer focusing ranges.
Life-Size Image Reproduction
The lens allows for continuous focusing down to 1:1 life-size magnification. Optional extension tubes can increase this ratio for even greater magnification.
L-Series Optical Quality
As a Canon L-series optic, the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens can be counted among the sharpest, best-built, weatherproof optics available for Canon EOS SLR cameras.
Hybrid Optical Image Stabilization
With the vibration gyro and acceleration sensor, the hybrid image stabilization system is effective for close-up shots. With a 4-stop compensation the IS enables blur-free images when shooting telephoto in low light and when working close-up in macro mode.
Quick and Quiet Focusing
By incorporating an ultrasonic focus motor, Canon has improved the speed and reduced the noise levels of the lens's autofocus system, while still allowing for full-time manual override.
Focus Range Limiter
Focusing distance range can be selected with a switch on the lens barrel. By setting a suitable focusing distance range, actual autofocus time can be shortened. The three focusing ranges are 1-1.6', 1.6'-infinity and the full range of 1' to infinity.

This is a truly great lens in most respects, but it does have some faults. The resolution and the bokeh this lens produces are outstanding and place this lens among the very best macro lenses out there. Actually, it is a better macro lens than all other 100mm offerings, except the Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar, and it is a better lens in many respects than the Zeiss. The biggest reason I didn't buy the Zeiss was the Zeiss isn't a true 1:1 macro lens (it's only 1:2), and the Zeiss doesn't have any AF or IS at all, which were limitations that were not suitable for my purposes (butterfly photography, where you don't have all day to focus manually, plus the hand-movement of doing so often startles the subject). However, the flipside to this is the fact the Canon's ability to manual focus (when critical MF is called for) is a joke compared to the Zeiss. In real numbers, you can focus from closeup to infinity with a mere 180 degree turn of the wrist with the Canon, while it takes you about 720 degrees of rotation to go from zero to infinity focusing the Zeiss. In other words, the Zeiss is 4x more precise in the manual focus department than the Canon, and it just feels like a much higher-quality instrument in this regard also. Both the Zeiss and the Canon take absolutely superb-quality images, and both produce superb-quality bokeh (out-of-focus background blur), both of which are key elements to macrophotography. Thus, if you're deciding on a macro lens for yourself, and want the very best, then your decision will be between this EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens by Canon or the 100mm f/2.0 Makro Planar by Zeiss. If you're serious about the best 100mm macro lens for your Canon body, it's going to be a choice between these two. The Tamrons and the Sigmas don't even come close. In order to decide which of these two lenses is best for you, you will need to question your own motives for getting a macro lens. If you always use a tripod, and if your subjects don't require true 1:1 magnification (e.g., portrait), and if your usual subjects stand still long enough for you to get absolutely perfect focus (and if your budget permits a ~$2000 lens), the Zeiss would be the clear choice. However, if you are out in the field alot, and if you shoot hand-held alot (and thus could use the Image Stabilization), and if you want to get true 1:1 magnification, and/or if many of your live-capture opportunities will be fleeting and so you need a fast auto-focus to capture a tiny creature while there's time (rather than a slow and deliberate manual focus that might take too long before the opportunity is gone), then I would get the Canon, which is what I personally did.As an owner of this Canon L lens, I love it for what it does: which is produce crystal-clear images and possibly the best bokeh I have ever seen out of any lens of any kind (even better than the Zeiss). But I would be lying if I said I still don't have it in my head to go ahead and get the Zeiss Makro Planar also, for what *it* does, which is offer absolutely precise manual focus. Because the biggest drawback to this Canon is its pitiful manual focus. If you move your hand, even a little bit, as you attempt to focus, it produces a dramatic difference because of the fact it only takes a 180-degree rotation to go from 1:1 to infinity, which again is a joke. The bottom line is the rotational elements for this Canon lens were made with auto-focusing as its main goal, and that's fine when you need it. But there are often some critical moments in macro-photography that require the super-precise focusing efforts, and 720-degree rotation capability of the Zeiss precision is simply superior to the Canon in this regard. But other than that, the Canon lens is a truly great lens in MOST of the key elements to macrophotography ... and the image-quality, the color rendition, and super-creamy bokeh it produces truly are top-notch ... and overall I am very happy with my desicion to have purchased it.Anyway, for what it's worth, that is my $0.02 ...Hope this helps,

VS

Pros - Sharp images, IS gives you a fighting chance w/o a tripod-just don't lean forward or back.
Cons - Even w/range adjustments, the AF does too much traveling. It startled me when it made a loud staggering/grinding noise like you hear when shifting worn gears on a truck. I almost dropped the camera. I shoot w/a 40D and had plenty of light. I must have received a bad copy.
This is my 3rd L-series lens. The light weight is great, but I expected more. I take away one star for the AF issue, and one star for the Tripod Mount Ring gouging ($190 - Really?)

My first L-series lens and it is well worth the price paid. Pictures are super sharp where they need to be with a nice bokeh. I've even used handheld for non-macro photos and have had great results.

I have used this lens multiple times before and it is always a super handy thing to have in your kit when you really need those super CU shots that can not be accomplished through other lenses. Note that all lenses with image stabilization will have an element that feels loose inside the lens if it is not connected to a camera which is totally normal.

Comments about Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens:

I purchased this lens for the macro capabilities but it is quickly becoming my walk-around lens. I shot a lot of nature so the light weight, high quality and fast speed are great. Not only am I using it for shooting plants and flowers I am also using it for my long shots. As I prefer to shot panos over wide angle, the high quality of the lens gives great results on the stitched images.

The only limitation of the lens is the 1-1 macro but given the quality of the images, I am able to crop severely and still get great images.

I recently got back into photography and bought a new 7D MKII body and [3] L series lens from B&H. Could not be happier with B&H. Now to the lens, it is an L series, what else can you say? Great build quality, excellent optics, works great. Highly recommended.

I purchased this lens with the sole intent on using it for macro photography. My first few shots were of my wife's jewelry and I was very impressed with how they turned out. However, I was blown away when I took a picture of my wife. Wow! The bokeh was incredible and her face was so sharp. I've owned this lens for less than 2 weeks and I have used it more for portrait photography than macro. What I thought would be a lens that I would occasionally use for macro photography has turned out to be my Go-To lens for portraits.

Comments about Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens:

I haven't had a chance to exhaustively put this lens through it's paces, but I have shot a fair amount with it.
            First to the pros:
This lens has an outstanding picture quality to it, and it appears to be very consistent. The Bokeh is quite good, and it is probably the lightest lens I own. Given that it's an 'L' series, that's a definite bonus. Color reproduction is nice, and consistent, and the sharpness seems to be evenly distributed across the spectrum.
            Now for the cons:
If your shooting something moving in a wind, which pretty much means the whole planet in March… good luck! It may just be my unfamiliarity with the settings switch on the side, but if I auto focus on something and it moves, the lens will sometimes then try to grab onto something in the far distant background; and if the switch isn't set for that distance, you have to back out and start all over. It can get pretty annoying. And even when the switch is properly set, the auto focus is somewhat pokey to get to the right depth, at which point it then becomes blindingly fast, once it's in the neighborhood. Think of the focus on this lens as the opposite of the old Mapquest directions you used to get – only okay in the beginning, but great guns once you get close.
Overall, I think this is a very good lens, and upon further familiarity with it, it may turn out to be an excellent lens. But so far, the touchy auto focusing brings the star count down to a 4.
The Bokeh really is quite something, though...

Comments about Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens:

I bought the canon EF 100 mm macro lens to use with my canon 7D, which makes it a 160mm stabilized macro lens. I use this set up to shoot the herds of insects and bugs that are attracted to the flowers I grow just for this reason. The lens is very sharp and gives me room to work around the flowers and not disturb the subjects like had to do with with my EF-S 60mm macro lens. The stabilization lets me hand hold the camera and makes shooting a lot quicker then having to use a tripod.

Comments about Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens:

I looovvvveeee this lens. I use it for so many different things! Detail shots at weddings (rings, flowers, etc.) and also portraits. It delivers such gorgeous, crisp images. The bokeh is so creamy and smooth. Sometimes it has a hard time focusing, but that could totally be user error. I am still perfecting the use of this lens.

I shoot jewelry and this 100mm macro is the very best there is for that line of work. It's very sharp and quick- a big step up from the non-L-series I was using before.

I have bin using this lens for years and I can tell you it's a two in one lens you can use it for both portrait or macro for real life size photos. The plastic body that people talk about is not a cheep plastic that will break so easy in fact your glass would break before the plastic does and canon made sure that it will hold up against the rough. Don't believe people that complain about things without trying them to there maximum advantage. The plastics body this lens have saves weight that don't mean it's not good. Listen, my lens took a smashing to the concrete head on and not a thing broke or got scratched everything works great like nothing never happen. Canon makes quality products and I know this first hand this is the reason why L Glass cost so much, it's quality your paying for. I trust canon to always give me the peace of mind when I buy top lenses from them. So for the people that is thinking twice about the plastic body, loose the thought just get this gem of quality and shoot beautiful images. It will last you a life time and yes this lens does have weather sealing.
