Overall I am very satisfied with this product so far. This version (not sure if all Samson mic systems are like this) has a locked in frequency, so you won't be able to change frequencies, you just have to buy a new system with a different frequency, i.e. UM1 or UM2 or UM3 and so on. After opening I sort of wish I spent the extra 30 bucks or whatever to get the larger lavalier ( I think it's the QL5) because the one I got is very small and flimsy. Tested it out, audio was great, clean and very easy to set up. Used it with a Panasonic HMC150.

I own my own video production studio and I have been buying from B&H for over 20 years and this is the first time I have ever return a product to them. First of all it has no way to attach the receiver end to A camcorder. I bought two of them and both preformed with very low quality, totally unacceptable. They say that the receiver is true diversity but when I use them no matter how it turned or how much distance there was between them they always stayed on channel B. Another thing I found irritating they give you several warnings about making sure that you did not put the battery in backwards as it could damage the unit but the receiver end has no markings to show you which is positive and which is negative I had to call the factory and they did finally admit that it is a design mistake there are no markings. If you need an inexpensive wireless Mic buy A Nady or an Azden they give you pretty good results for the money and actually are a little cheaper. If you can afford it move up and buy either the Sony or Sennheiser, the old saying fits very well here, you get what you pay for. Would not recommend to a friend or even an enemy.

Comments about Samson UM1 Portable Wireless Lavalier Microphone System:

I tried these for a shoot and sadly had to return them. In the end, the sound quality was just awful. Even after adjusting everything this hiss was pretty bad. To be fair - with post processing software, you can clean up the audio fairly well. But to me that is an unacceptable answer. If you really need audio cheap, and proficient with audio cleaning then it may be an option for you.

What I didn't like was just the overall build quality. Even the BATTERY compartment didn't work, and I had to put tape in it to keep the battery lodged with the connections. I could only imagine the results long term. In the end, save up, and buy a better option. It will be worth it.

Comments about Samson UM1 Portable Wireless Lavalier Microphone System:

I used this product to follow around subjects in a reality TV style production.
I ordered 2 of these systems, the UM1 and UM2.
Both worked reasonably well, but did have some issues.
One system would give me a constant hum and could be seen at high levels on my H4N, while the other worked perfectly.
I have not had a chance to really run any tests, but I have a feeling its the microphone thats the problem.
Really easy to use and worked like I hoped.

Comments about Samson UM1 Portable Wireless Lavalier Microphone System:

Get this mic if you need a wireless setup and can't afford anything else. Be prepared to replace it with a nicer one when your budget permits.

That said, it is possible to get good sound using this mic; if you know what you're doing and have a little patience, a mixer, some headphones and a level meter.

I Got best results recording on my computer after sending the signal through a mixer. The signal from the mic is pretty noisy, but by adjusting the gain and output level to reduce the hiss (use heaphones and a level meter) you can send a good enough signal to your mixer, then amplify the signal through the mixer and send a good signal to your recording device.

Comments about Samson UM1 Portable Wireless Lavalier Microphone System:

I do outdoor videography so there is already a lot of ambient background noise to contend with. Out of the box there is a noticeable hiss as other reviewers have indicated. By moving the receiver levels to -30db and adjusting the gain on the body pack this is resolved. Once adjusted the unit works very nicely. It has good range and good sound quality. Considering the price point this is a good product as long as you take the time to fine tune it before use.

Comments about Samson UM1 Portable Wireless Lavalier Microphone System:

I know this product is not meant to be an amazing mic system, so for the money it is definitely worth it and for a cheaper mic system it deserves several stars. My audio was much better this time using the mic system than anything I had shot in the past without it. It was a little fuzzy when the audio got louder, but did a sufficient job. I would recommend this to anyone who is shooting at smaller locations, not very large productions. I have not had any problems with the system's single frequency yet, hope it stays that way!

Comments about Samson UM1 Portable Wireless Lavalier Microphone System:

I use the UM1 for weddings and love walks primarily and it is the second one that I have purchased. My old one worked fine but I was forced to buy a new one because of the new FCC reg which made mine illegal.

Right out of the box I was disapointed with it because it had a lot of static and distortion. It adjusted out OK but coming from the factory I expect not to have to adjust it. That is the only reason I gave it 4 stars. To me that is bad QC. But now it is working OK. Another problem is not with Samson but with B&H. I ordered the one which included a white clip and wind screen but all I got was black.

I would recommend this to a friend but not as a high end mic. I need to use it more to comment on reliability.

The audio quality is great for such a low cost item, but there is a persistent low hum that is transmitted as well. The range is good, and mic works great. Does not have the ability to change channels however.

I recently purchased a Samson Lavalier from BH. I live in Hawaii and do all my video products shopping with B& H [...].In the past few years I have purchased video camcorders and also Bogen tripods, and external mics which I used in my business.I am just starting to use the new Lavalier and it is giving me a whole new spectrum of control and effects in my video work. This Lavalier can be adjusted with the gain control to produce a really nice sound. I suggest purchasing the micro cat wind screen as Lavaliers pick up wind sounds easily.
