We use this with an H4N for DSLR video production. The quality is good and the signal is clear over short distances. We are never more than 30 feet away from the receiver but we've had no problems so far. As other reviewers have said, the gain is set super high from the factory and you have to use the screwdriver to turn it down. You will get less noise that way. On factory settings, we had to turn the H4N down to .5/100 % to keep it from clipping. Obviously there is plenty of room to reduce the mic's gain. The lav is not the highest quality, but works for us. Can't beat it for the price!

Use with Sony PRJ760 camcorder to capture conversations from a distance. At a distance of 3-6 feet the Sony built-in mic is much clearer, with less background hiss than the UM1 lavalier. Much past 6 feet the lavalier has the advantage. The XLR input to mini-jack produced significantly better sound quality with less background noise when plugged into the camcorder, than recording via UM1 earphone jack. Recording via UM1 earphone jack resulted in horrendous white noise when speaker is silent. The XLR cable greatly reduces this noise.

Also used the lavalier setup to record speakers via H2N. The built-in mics of the H2N produce incredibly good sound when the speaker is close. It is too bad the UM1 lavalier system does not produce better sound quality when used in conjunction with the H2N, since both products are made by the same company.

Overall, I'd say the UM1 offers "OK" / "Good" sound quality at a distance and at close range, whereas the built-in mics of the Sony camcorder and H2N offer SUPERB sound quality when the subject is within a few feet of the recording device. It is when comparing sound quality at close range that the UM1 lavalier appears quite deficient. At a distance, the lavalier is to be preferred over the built-in mic. A Rode external mic does a decent job as well at intermediate distances, e.g., 10-25 feet, and is much easier to use than the UM1 and CT7.

I will be investigating the less expensive blue-tooth consumer wireless mic for use with Sony camcorder, as I'm curious as to whether it may produce better quality than a third party prosumer wireless mic. Unfortunately none of the salesmen I spoke with at B&H had made such a comparison i.e., consumer blue-tooth wireless mic vs. prosumer UHF wireless mic.

I just started my company, and I use these microphones for ENG type shoots. While they aren't the worst, they are cheaply made and won't stand up to much wear and tear.

I tried using this product in the outdoors, there was a constant hissing sound in the background and as soon as you get more than 10 feet away the start to cut in and out with a loud clacking noise.. I DO NOT recommend these at all, the price may seem worth it, but when you gotta go spend $700 on another set it absolutely isn't

    Microphone TOO BIG

Comments about Samson UM1 Portable Wireless Lavalier Microphone System:

I'm a pro who uses Sennheisers for filmmaking. But I also teach a video class and wanted affordable ones for the class. The technical specs on this mike are real good. So I thought I had the most bang for the buck cheap wireless Lav.
But when I got it I saw the mic itself is HUGE! 5 times as big as you would expect a lavaliere to be. With the foam cover on it it is the size of a large black olive. How on earth can you hide that on your talent? It think it is even too big for news style exposed mic shoots. So I thought I'd just use a smaller mic. But Samson gave it a special balanced cable connector that is incompatible with other mics. It's also totally unnecessary to shield a mic cable that's less than 3 feet long. The most expensive letrasonic mics available don't have shielded mic cables. So Samson really screwed up what would otherwise be a real good product. If only they had a standard 1/8th inch plug and a useably small mic. FRUSTRATING.

The pieces are a little largers (bulkier) than I expected. The smaller is approximatel 4x2.5x1 inches.
There was a pleasent supprise -- it came in a case(11x14.5x3.5 inches)with foam cut outs for these peices and other pieces so you can consolidate your sound equiptment.

It is OK. It is not unusable, but not great either sound quality-wise. We were using it to record the audio for an academic lecture. It did the job, but I completely freaked out when I put new batteries in and it didn't work. It turns out I had to pull out the battery contacts a tiny bit so they would securely touch the battery. It was brand new and unused at this point. Scarey.

We use several wireless mics for our projects, and the samson wireless mics have not let us down yet. They have great range and great tones, and pickup dialog from talent perfectly. The body packs are light and small, which means our talent is not restricted by bulkier cumbersome packs. The receivers are also light and small so they don't weigh down your sound person, or camera person ( if you run thru camera XLR) .These packs are great and we will be buying more..

Anyone who is serious about quality sound recordings should stay as far as possible away from this system. There is a very annoying hiss in the background and the microphone is bulky, extremely difficult to hide and of exceptionally poor quality.

This is the epitome of bad radio mic sound and it will terrorize you in post. So my advice is, if you can't afford Sony UWPs or better, find an alternative, but the SAMSON UM1 is according to my believes a waste of money. I have returned it.

I just recently purchased this mic for some freelance work. So far it has done well for a less expensive lav kit. It isn't build really solid like some other mics I've used, but it gets the job done. The few times I've used it, it has picked up good sound quality. I found that the mic was really sensitive, so I had to position it further away from the subject than I normally do, but that was fine.

Mic works really well and adds to your video product. Awesome product for hunting at a fraction of the price of most cheaper mics. Very hard on batteries but still way cheaper then most mics with exceptional quality.

I use the Lav for local commercial video production. I found the range to be adequate for interviews and medium shots. The mic isn't perfect. Meaning it could have more dynamic range, but for the price it is more than adequate.

I work at a University and we've had 6 of these for over 10 years and they've held up with student use very well. I tried to save some money and purchased an Audio Technica Pro 88W but I'm returning it and went back to the Samson UM1. The Mini XLR seems to be a much better connection.

It came in a large case that is foam cut to hold hand held also. Nice but I preferred the older smaller case. Also the Transmitter and Receiver don't really look like they match (coloring and graphics) anymore but still works well

I bought this inexpensive wireless mic to shoot news video for my TV station using my Canon T2i camera. I wasn't sure what to expect as far as quality goes, but the audio has been great and has given me the flexibility to do better shoots using a wireless mic. The system is easy to use, and the receiver attaches easily to the camera body using a Velcro strip. At some point, I might upgrade the lav mic, which is probably the weakest part of the system.
