The 160GB iPod classic (Black) from Apple is the stalwart anchor of the iPod line. Offering the most storage of any iPod, the hard drive-based classic puts up to 40,000 songs, 200 hours of video, or 25,000 photos into your pocket. The classic features a bright 2.5" LCD screen, which displays album artwork and song information when playing music. You'll be able to navigate through music using a standard playlist menu, or through the gorgeous Cover Flow system, which displays a virtual wall of your digital album covers on the iPod's color screen.

Navigation is achieved using the venerable Click Wheel interface, which allows you to scroll through music and playlists by rotating your finger across its smooth surface. Simply click one of the 5 controls -- the unlabeled center button, Play/Pause in the 6 o'clock position, Previous at 9 o'clock, Next at 3 o'clock, and Menu at 12 o'clock -- to work your way through the intuitive menu system. To turn the device off, simply hold play for a few seconds. A physical "Hold" switch is located on the top of the device, allowing you to lock the controls to prevent an accidental song change or volume adjustment.

The iPod works with Apple's iTunes software, included with every Mac and available as a free download for Windows, to manage your music library. In addition to syncing your music library between your computer and portable device, iTunes syncs your calendars, contacts, notes, and games.

Like most current iPods, the classic connects to a computer and other peripheral devices using the Dock connector. This opens it up for use with a world of peripherals, including speaker docks, Bluetooth headphone adapters, and more. It includes a Dock to USB cable, allowing you to sync and charge the device with your Mac or PC.

The integrated battery can provide up to 36 hours of audio playback, or 6 hours of video playback, on a single charge. You'll be able to charge the device to 80% capacity in as little as 2 hours, and to full capacity in only 4 hours.

The iPod classic isn't just a media player. If you delve into its "Extras" menu, you will find that it sports the aforementioned calendar, contact list, notes, and games. It ships with 3 free games -- Vortex, iQuiz, and Klondike solitaire -- with more games available for purchase in iTunes. You can also set the iPod's time zone and create custom alarms for yourself. A sleep timer is available, allowing you to automatically turn the iPod off after a certain amount of time has passed -- as little as 15 minutes or as much as 2 hours. You'll also be able to access a stopwatch function, perfect for timing steeping time for the perfect cup of tea, and a screen lock function to prevent unauthorized access.

The Settings menu allows you to control all aspects of your iPod's functionality. You'll be able to use it to control shuffle and repeat functions, customize what items appear on menus, and adjust playback speed of audio books, perfect for those times when you only have a few hours of time to finish listening to the audio version of Anna Karenina.

The Settings menu also allows you to adjust the playback EQ, set the date and time, and control whether or not the iPod makes an audible 'click' while scrolling. You can also adjust music sorting order, LCD brightness, and set a volume limit, ensuring that you don't accidentally blow out your eardrums by setting the volume too high.

Triggering the iPod's Genius feature when listening to a song will automatically create a playlist from other music in your library that goes well with what you're listening to. You'll even be able to save a Genius playlist for future use, or create another if the first attempt isn't quite smart enough for you
The iPod classic's massive 160GB hard drive can store up to 40,000 songs, 200 hours of video, or 25,000 photos. If your media library isn't that large, you can enable disk use for the iPod in iTunes, allowing you to use it as a standard portable hard drive in addition to a media player
You'll get up to 36 hours of battery life for audio, 6 for video, ensuring that you can use the device for extended periods without having to recharge
The Click Wheel interface allows you to navigate through the iPod's menu system with ease. You can browse album art via the Cover Flow system, or navigate songs and videos by playlist, artist, album, genre, and more. You'll be able to search for specific titles and artists via an on-screen keyboard. If you're unsure as to what you'd like to listen, simply select the Shuffle Songs settings to take a randomized tour through your music library
The iPod's vivid 2.5" LCD display brings videos to life. From within iTunes you can purchase or rent movies, buy TV shows, and download video podcasts. They will be automatically copied to your iPod when you sync, allowing you to enjoy them at your leisure
Sometimes there's nothing like a good game to relax or tease your brain. The iPod classic ships with 3 installed games -- Vortex, iQuiz, and Klondike -- but more can be purchased from the iTunes store. Every iPod game is specifically designed to be played using the Click Wheel interface
The iPod classic is a great way to share your digital photos with friends and family. It syncs photos from your pictures folder or iPhoto library on a Mac, or from your My Pictures folder, Adobe Photoshop Album, or Adobe Photoshop Elements software for Windows. You can display photo slideshows, complete with music and transitions, on the iPod classic, and output to a TV using an optional component or composite AV cable

having recieved a touch and marveling at its abilities, iwas was tempted and bought a classic as my music inventory is much bigger than the 16 gigs (14.5 available). since ive recieved it and loaded my whole library on it,iv used it on a couple of long driving trips with an fm adapter and its real nice to be able to pick any song you want to hear with hassling with a bunch of cd's.
and i have a few movies on it(could do the same with the touch ,just not as much)which help kill the empty times we all have from time to time.
im thinking with the addition of a cable or two,i
could avoid taking dvds with me as well to kill those rainy days in fishing camp. the screen is ok for watching movies and videos, but its much better to be able to share on a bigger screen
with others.and being able to also carry some files around sounds pretty good to me.dont really need that sort of thing but it can be done with it.other than a fairly high price tag,i cant really find any thing wrong with it. one thing to be aware of though is when you buy a protective sleeve or case for it,they may come with a screen protector(clear plastic) and a thumbwheel protector as well. ive found that the thumbwheel would work whe covered with the heavy plastic.
tried a little modification to the sleeve which reall didnt turn out too good.

A 16 GB nano was my first ipod. I did like it, but decided my next mp3 would not be Apple due to the software restrictions. My nano was stolen so I researched mp3s and my conclusion was that nothing currently competes with the ipod for storage capacity. I wanted greater than 16GB this time around.
The volume on 0 is still audible, not too loud but why can't I control my minimum volume. After a little research I found that this is common to ipod. Because of this volume issue and the fact that it is Apple I can only give this a 3 although I am happy with the product so far.
I recommend ipod only if you want storage capicity above 16GB, 16GB and under go with something else.
Hopefully by the time I need another mp3, there will be other things that can complete with the ipod. But for now, it is Apple only by default :(

Comments about 160GB iPod classic (Silver, 7th Generation):

I've owned several ipods and this classic has the best sound of them all. Even better than my 64 gig Touch. It must have better dacs inside. I use very expensive in ears phones and the difference is quite striking. Perfect music machine. Click wheel is perfect design. .......

For a couple of years, I had an Eclipse MP3 player. It played music, but it made me realize how smooth the ipod is for scrolling through music. The ipod classic is the way to go for an MP3 player because it is so easy to use, and can store all of you music library.

We're all familiar with the Classic's iconic look and controls and, besides new Cover Flow options, not much has changed since the previous version. My favorite thing about the interface, that has continued from previous generations, is that it supports multiple languages. I have an eclectic world-wide library, consisting of some European, a lot of American, and even more Asian music. All languages are listed perfectly in their native script. I mainly use my Classic for commuting, during work outs, and when traveling as quite a few hotels have iPod docks that can use Classics/iPhones as alarms.

The larger 160GB capacity makes this great for carrying most of your library on demand, without the need to rely on data allowance and signal strength.

Sound quality is excellent and perfect for the average person. Audiohphiles looking for the absolute best sound might want to consider other players.

There are two things to consider when purchasing the iPod Classic. First, the Classic comes with a 30-pin connector that is pretty much outdated. Second, and most important, the iPod Classic has been discontinued by Apple and is no longer supported.

I had been planning to get a larger iPod since I purchasesd my 80GB iPod in 2009. A shame Apple has decided to discontinue the larger sizes iPods. I got this one for my massive music collection and I will use my 80GB for movies. Amazing how this one is twice the size of my old one yet smaller in size! Get one while you can!

The last in the line of the greatest music player that changed the way we listened to music. These iPods are now discontinued at Apple. The hard drive in these will hold a huge library in nearly all popular music formats. The price is right at B&H Photo and they got it to me fast. And if you ever decide to sell it, the used prices for iPods are amazing. The user interface on this model with the click wheel is (IMHO) far better than the smart device user interfaces. They don't do all the stuff that the smart phones and iPod Touches do, but as a pure music player, it's the best in it's price class.

The Classic was the perfect iPod for carrying around one's entire music collection. When you don't have a wi-fi connection, but you want access to almost every song you own, this thing was rock solid. The battery life was amazing, and it just WORKED. You will be sorely missed, iPod Classic! Rest in peace, 'ol buddy.

I was shocked to learn Apple decided to discontinue the iPod Classic - I suppose it doesn't sell apps, so it's less a priority for the modern incarnation of Apple.

I was overjoyed to see B&H still had some in stock and purchased one right away. Sure, it has a "click wheel" interface, but I ultimately prefer the music experience of a simple music player that integrates well with my music library. It's not "audiophile" level, but it's better (in my opinon) that listening on your phone or a device that's constantly popping notifications for email, etc. It does music, and it does it well.

Got another one (my 3rd one) the day after Apple discontinued it. Thank goodness, since the price went up 50%, and that's if you can find one. For serious music collectors, it's the only way to go. The best way to listen amd watch a boatload of CD's, podcasts, movies, photos, etc. An incredibly elegant device since its inception, it's a shame Apple discontinued it. At least I have 3 of them.

Got my ipod on time and cheaper than most of the retailers that sell them as well. Luckily as well since two weeks after purchasing it the classic iPods are no longer for sale...

I purchased this ipod as a dedicated device for my truck. It holds a frightening amount of content, is highly reliable, and replaces an older, smaller ipod that I had for quite some time. I'm very happy with my purchase, and with B&H. They got the thing shipped right away and I had it faster than I would've thought possible.

Like many of you, I love music. I love to take my music everywhere I go, specially when I am working out or travelling. These days, with the arrival of smartphones and cloud technologies devices like MP3 players might seem a little old fashioned. In my opinion, nothing compares to a dedicated MP3 player when it comes to music. That's where the iPod Classic comes into picture. The ease of use, the 160GB capacity and the wide selection of accessories makes it almost an undisputed winner. Of course, iPods are not perfect, but they offer good sound, very durable hardware. My only reason for the 4 stars ratings are two:1) Price - iPod Classic still sells for over $. Somewhat pricey if you consider you can buy any other brand for a fraction of the price.2) Features - iPods miss some features like FM tuners or voice recorders. I would personally would like to have more features on the menus like the ability to delete tracks on the fly, again, it's just a matter of personal taste. In general, iPod Classic is a solid performer and none of my Android or IOS device can replace it.

This poduct is my favorite particularly because of the memory space 160GB. It's easy to use, easy to set and has a life span that's not to short if you take care of it. I use a cover to protect mi.e from scratches. There are some downsides that are list here.
                            -it's not tendy
                            -it doesn't have radio
-it doesnt sort the albums by artsit (in the artist menu) but rather in alphabetical order
-the screen is not the biggest, but it works fine eve for movie its just not you 72" flatscreen
-the operating system is not really into the graphics and all that it's more set-up to be a hard drive with ALL (AND DO I MEAN ALL!!!) you media which includes, music, movies, photos, podcasts, itunes u. just everything.
in conclusion, if you want a small handheld thingy to carry around all your media with you but that doesnt need to be cool looking (though it's not ugly at all) then this is the way to go!!

I have a stupid large music collection and this lets me have all of it on the go. I last had a 5th Gen 80gb iPod that I got in 2005, which only died this year. I'm going to stick with something that works that well.
