Comments about Canon WFT-E5A Wireless File Transmitter (WFT):

I bought this because of tech envy. I saw another photographer using it on a photo shoot and wanted it so bad it hurt. The price tag was the only reason I had to wait.

Now that I have it I love it. It was a little challenging getting it setup on my MBP but once I got it working it was definitly worth the purchase price.

I use it for remote controlled un-therthed shooting
        and some studio work
A lot of different ways to use it!
More ways than I need, but nice to have it I should need them
The ability to use EOS Utility w/o a cable is great for portrait and
product shoots. Using it outdoors is wonderful.

Comments about Canon WFT-E5A Wireless File Transmitter (WFT):

I use the ad hoc built into this unit to create my network, and then use an iPad with ShutterSnitch to preview images (ShutterSnitch has an FTP server built in that supports direct and passive modes). I tell the iPad to use the WFT's ad hoc network so I don't need a PC or pocket router or MiFi. It works like magic. All you need is the iPad and your 7D. That's it. So this combo works anywhere in the world. You can then switch networks to upload to Flickr or your FTP site from ShutterSnitch.

One thing they don't tell you is that that you need to have "create directory" privileges on the FTP server that you use or you'll get an error message and the camera won't connect. I was using FileZilla on my home machine and I had it restricted to not allow it to create directories and noticed the failure in the FileZilla Server Interface when the Canon tried to create a directory. Once I gave my user all privileges the Canon connected perfectly to the FTP server.

Comments about Canon WFT-E5A Wireless File Transmitter (WFT):

I've had the WFT-E5A for about two weeks and I have been testing it every chance I get! I purchased this little gem with the intention to instantly transfer the small jpeg files to my laptop while shooting on location to verify and adjust my lighting. Anyway everything has worked great with the exception of the "EOS Utility Mode" the WFT randomly drops the connection on ad-hoc and infrastructure modes and I have to reset the WFT by turning my camera off and on again! It has also happened with a wired connection using the ethernet connection but I only tried that once so I don't know wether to blame the EOS Utility software, My Computer, Router, or the WFT.... Only time will tell!

But other than that the FTP mode rocks! I haven't had a problem with connection loss using the ftp mode also the WFT Server mode has worked flawlessly But my personal favorite is the FTP Mode I'm running a FTP server on my Windows 7 laptop I link them together via Ad-Hoc I start the EOS utility then the monitor folder option and link it to my FTP folder and the images takes a couple of seconds to appear on the Quick Preview window and Digital Photo Professional for review on my laptop after the shots.

Oh and one other thing you don't need to have the battery inside the unit for it to operate as a vertical grip even without the battery the vertical grip controls on the WFT work so If you're not using the WFT to transfer files I would just leave the battery out and have it as a backup for the Camera and it makes it a little lighter too!
