Product Highlights
  • Lightweight Ballhead
  • Functions as a Gimbal Head
  • Functions as a Leveling Base
  • 25 Lb Load Capacity

The Acratech GP Ballhead is not only a first-class ballhead, it can also function as a gimbal head for shooting with telephoto lenses, and even be used upside down as a leveling base for stitched panoramic images. The GP Ballhead makes it possible for you to pan parallel to the horizon, even on very rough terrain, so there's no need for a separate leveling base for accurate panoramic images. All of this, and it only weighs 1 lb. It also includes a quick release clamp with bullseye level, double-speed knob and detent pin (which prevents the plate and anything attached to it from sliding out of the quick-release clamp when it's partially loosened).

Works as a gimbal head with lenses up to 400 f4.0
Weighs less than 1 lb (0.45 kg) with quick-release clamp
Easily holds over 25 lbs (11.4 kg) at any angle
Full movements allow any camera position

All knobs are secured so they cannot vibrate loose and fall off
Oilless and greaseless ball will not attract or hold dirt and debris

I have been searching for the "right" tripod head for years. I went through pan heads, standard ball heads, and nearly every other kind of tripod head you can imagine. I finally bit the bullet and purchased this tripod head along with 2 quick release plates. All I can say is WOW. The workmanship on this head is wonderful: solid and lightweight. The ballhead has a tension ring making the mounting of larger heavier lenses much safer and easier. Each knob has a soft rubberized grip that makes adjusting this head very easy even with gloves on. Movement of the ball is very smooth and having the ball itself exposed makes cleaning it and keeping it smooth very easy. The thing that really sets this head apart from many of the other ballheads I shopped for was the panorama head base. It can be used upright or upside down (see manufacturer's website for how to reverse the head) as a panorama head and includes a leveling base. There is also a gimbal head feature which makes handling a larger camera rig precisely very easy. The head takes standard arca-swiss style plates making it easy to find custom sized plates for nearly every camera setup.

All in all, this head is everything I had been searching for and more. It easily handles my 1D Mk II + Canon 100-400 + 580 EX II combination smoothly and efficiently. I couldn't be happier with my purchase!

I am a wildlife/outdoor photographer and use some fairly heavy camera/lens combos. I purchased the Acratech GP about a month ago and am genrally pleased with it's performance. The head definitely handles the weight of my biggest lens and once the tension is correctly set, allows easy movement of the camera/lens. My main complaint is the positioning of the knob that releases the mounting plate from the head. It is right next to the lens collar knob when the lens is in the 'gimbaled' position. I recetly dropped a canon 7d and 300mm 2.8is lens from the tripod by mistakenly turning the release knob instead of the tripod collar knob. I know, my stupidity. But still, they are very close to one another and when shooting wildlife I often spin my camera from vert. to horiz.while never taking my eyes off of my subject. Fortunately the only damage that occurred was a destroyed battery grip, but it could hav cost me thousands if the camera gods had not been smiling down on me. All in all, the head is solid, holds the camera still, and is very well built, but buy the quick release lever mount if you plan on using the gimbal position.

        Comments about Acratech GP Ballhead:

This replaces a much bigger and heavier ball head. I wanted something small and open that would be easy to keep clean. The fact that it can function as a self leveling head as well as a gimbal are fantastic.

        Comments about Acratech GP Ballhead:

I'm not sure why online reviews of ballheads do not include this piece. It's leaps and bounds ahead of the competition.

Why did I purchase this? I will be honest, the price tag alone is enough to sober someone up. And I hesitated for quite some time, over a year. In the past I purchased a grip action Manfrotto ballhead and I liked it. I took it on a trip to Great Sand Dunes National Park and I instantly destroyed it. The sand got inside, stuck with the lubricant, and ate the entire system up. Smooth motion became a sandpaper-on-sandpaper choppy, grinding movement. And you can't open those enclosed ballheads and clean them in the field either; they are factory assembled and you need special equipment to put them back together. The Acratech GP design is amazing; No sticky lubricant to trap debris, easy to clean functionally, and still has the performance I need. Actually it has more performance than other ball heads because you're getting a leveling base for panoramic work AND a gimbal head for light weight telephoto lenses.

I also hesitated to purchase because of the quick plate attach mechanism. It looked very loose compared to other systems I've used before; like manfrotto's locking lever system. I never worried about a falling camera. But honestly I like this system more; i'm fairly surprised. It doesn't lock per se; but the indent pin works well at preventing a slip in the event the plate attach mechanism comes loose. But it doesn't come loose. It's rock solid. It's a quick turn to release too. No fancy levers and locks to deal with. Place the camera in, turn, secure. Very quick to setup.

The weight and compactness are also great features vs the competition. I often hike through the Adirondacks with my tripod slung over my shoulder and those are two things that matter; bulk and weight. It's extremely light weight; almost half a pound or great in difference from some other heads i've used. And the fact there's no large handles to catch branches is also nice. I could have opted for the smaller, lighter series of GP (GPs or GPss) but the difference wasn't enough to change my mind. When we're talking half a pound, yea that's great, a few oz's not a big deal. The GP appears more rugged and the knobs fit better with my hands than the smaller series. But I guess time will tell.

Using this ballhead along with my new Manfrotto 190cx Pro4 I now have a tripod that weighs less than 5 lbs, that functions as a ballhead, gimbal and panoramic base, closes down to 24.85" and reaches 67.25", and does so much more for me. I cannot complain with this setup. Very happy.

The only downside is that it does not include a baseplate. But that's fine because it gives you the ability to pick and choose which plate fits your needs; instead of indirectly paying for one that doesn't.

        Made in USA.

If the quick release plate had been provided I would have given it 5 stars. Other than this, it's one of the best ballheads I've used. Very smooth operation and easy to use.

                  Comments about Acratech GP Ballhead:

I shoot mostly wildlife and plants and carry my tripod on trails where it is subjected to the elements. My previous ballhead got sticky and I was unable to clean it out. The open ballhead design of the Acratech allows you to blow out dust and sand grains. The design, especially the smooth-moving ballhead, allows lots of options for your shooting situation. When shooting extremely close up for detailed plant parts, I notice the ballhead slips a small amount after locking it down, so I have learned to compensate for that. A few months after purchasing the GP, my photography instructor noticed that there was no fluid in the level, oops, and he encouraged me to call Acratech to get it fixed. I called Acratech and then shipped the tripod head to them. They replaced the level for free, cleaned and lubricated the whole unit and returned it in less than a week. They were very helpful and I am encouraged to be working with such a responsive company.

                    Comments about Acratech GP Ballhead:

I expected some compromises with a "do everything" ballhead. This one comes close to being no-compromise. It is a solid head that locks right down as it should. Flip it over and it is a great leveling head for panoramas. It is a bit clunky as a gimbal head, but hey, one can't expect a Wimberly. It is functional if not as smooth as one might like.I do find the QR knob to be too similar to the tightening knob. It might be worth going with the lever on the QR plate instead of the knob.First class construction and ease of use add up to a good all around value

                        Comments about Acratech GP Ballhead:

You can have the best tripod in the world but it won't do you any favors with a cheap ballhead attached. Then along comes the GP ballhead by Acratech. This thing looks like it is from the future but it is a solidly built piece of equipment that is pretty easy to use. The GP is light, solid, and will stedily hold your camera in position. I have been looking and researching ballheads for some time before deciding on the GP. The Acratech website with it's instructional tutorials will get you up and running in no time. If you're serious about photography you will not find a better ballhead than the Acratech GP. Yes this will cost you more money but it will last much longer and is well worth the investment.

                              Comments about Acratech GP Ballhead:

I bought this as my first ballhead after using a pan and tilt head for years. I use this head for landscape photography. It is easy to move the camera around to get it into the initial position, and when the tension is set it is easy to make minor adjustments by moving the camera and then letting it allowing the tension to keep it in place. I have noticed that when I use my Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens the release knob is close to the tripod collar knob on the lens. I almost dropped my camera by starting to loosen the release knob instead of the tripod collar knob. However, I found it easier to put the lens on the head the other way and not use the bubble level. This head has become a favorite head in its ease of use and stability. It definitely supports my Nikon D800 with a Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens and my Hasselblad 500C/M and a 150mm lens.

I went with the GP Ballhead for the purpose of stability with my 4x5 film camera and versatility of use with a dslr camera with a heavier lens. It is very easy to go from horizontal to verticle and not have the camera creep with the dslr. This Ballhead can take some rough country use and still maintain integrity, just keep it clean of dust and other elements by wiping down after use.Very please with it and it compliments the Gitzo tripod with stability. Also recomend the Acratech quick release plate specific for your camera.

I made the decision to go with the GP Ballhead after looking and comparing with other ballheads. This is a little pricey but Acratech warranties their product ten years to the original buyer. It is light weight and has a solid hold on your gear. I use mine when using a slow shutter speed, shooting DSLR video or just trying to get creative. A very well designed Ballhead. I got what I paid for.

                                    Comments about Acratech GP Ballhead:

I bought this to replace a bulky, heavy manfrotto head I had been using for a number of years which just wasn't conducive to travel photography and long hikes. This was certainly a step up in price but I wanted something light, sturdy, easy-to-use, and indestructible!
The GP Ballhead checks everyone of those with aplomb. It's a piece of beautifully machined and well thought-out engineering. There is absolutely no slippage and it's so smooth in operation as to be a joy to use. Most of the time, a tripod is a barrier between the photographer and his vision, and this tripod head just made the hurdle a little lower.
I have no real negative remarks to make about this wonderful head. It's a joy to use. I guess, should I ever want to put some real heavy glass on it, the much touted gimbal-like ability would probably not be quite up to the task. However, I was very much aware of this when I bought it and it is not what the head is designed to accommodate or how I would utilize it. If you want a tripod head that is light, flexible, built like a tank, and a joy to handle look no further. Just don't expect something in this price range or size to be up to carrying the meatiest of set-ups.

I'm very happy with my new Acratech ballhead. Everything about it matches it's description – it's a first-class ballhead, it functions as a gimbal head for shooting with telephoto lenses and can be used upside down as a leveling base for shooting panoramas – it does exactly what I need it to do.
Besides being totally satisfied with this product, the Acratech website was amazingly helpful in my making sure I was purchasing the best product for my needs.

                                        Comments about Acratech GP Ballhead:

I am a pro outdoor photographer with a heavy emphasis on macro work. I love the light weight and the ease of use but a bit disappointed in that the head seems to creep a bit when I am locked down on a macro subject.
