Comments about MOTU Digital Performer 7 - Audio Production Software (Competitive Upgrade):
If you're contemplating buying this, now is a great time since you'll get a free upgrade to DP8 which was announced at NAMM 2012.
This is good for anyone, but I want to speak in particular to those who own Live and are contemplating another DAW. I thought it rather cheeky of MOTU to consider getting DP after Live 8 an "upgrade" but it absolutely is. Apart from being a much deeper program in every way, there's one thing I never read in any online forum that is the most striking: *it sounds better*. I feel like I'm hearing my voice and saxophone for the first time through my DAW.
Live is great for some things such as sketching loop based ideas out, practicing, flexible live performing, or using many of its great instruments and sounds. It won't be fully replaced, but it is a clear second fiddle. At very least, after DP, I couldn't recommend Live for recording audio. DP is more inspiring to work with. I can't recall what jazz musician likened playing in Ellington's band like college after playing in Basie's like high school... obviously Basie is great but...
DP's massive user guide (over a thousand pages) dwarfs Live's which is a couple hundred pages, at considerably fewer words per page. So it's obvious from the start how much more is possible in DP. I feel like learning DP really teaches you electronic music production while Live just teaches you Live. All that said, they're not mutually exclusive! You can source Live buses seamlessly into DP with ease. So all and best of both worlds. Lovin it.
I'm still just getting started, but the one criticism I have is that the UI seems like it could be slightly more intuitive and flexible, and certain things that you need may very often are further into submenus without hotkey shortcuts. But DP8, which is a major release (first time on Windows too) I hope will bring some improvements in this area.
Overall, highly recommended.

Comments about MOTU Digital Performer 7 - Audio Production Software (Competitive Upgrade):
I've been using DP7 since the Digital Performer 4 days and it really has everything you need to track MIDI, chop up samples, even score films.
Maybe a bit too much for most users but great for dedicated and detail-oriented musicians.

Random noise bursts still plague DP, it seems. And "tech support" turns a blind eye. I suggest going with a professional application. Which Digital Performer is not.

Comments about MOTU Digital Performer 7 - Audio Production Software (Competitive Upgrade):
I am so glad I upgraded from DP5 to DP7. It works so well. Very snappy overall. Still some waveform redraw issues occasionally.
The only real problem is getting used to the new look. It was pretty horrible at first, and after several attempts at extreme customization, I simply changed a few elements and it's fine. First, forget all the colors, it just doesn't work anymore. If you get the color of a track right, the waveform will be wrong. So just turn it off. It's easy to swap png files for each theme, so I just took some fade knobs from one, and some other bits here and there to make a them that was clear and easy to navigate.
The new plugins are decent, though I disabled all of them, as decent simply isn't good enough for me. Thankfully, it's easy to re-enable them should I require something.
All and all, a very worthwhile upgrade.

Comments about MOTU Digital Performer 7 - Audio Production Software (Competitive Upgrade):
You wouldn't think that colours would make that much of a difference to an audio program. Wrong! Having changeable skins makes the whole experience much more pleasing to the eye, and I feel like I'm more productive when I'm looking at something that isn't an eyesore. Top marks MOTU. Another huge thing that DP now has is DP remote. Honestly, this is great. The remote downloads to your iphone easily, and connection is quick and simple, with no lag. Love it! I've now got an 8 fader touch surface on my phone!!! And being able to hit play/pause rec etc now means when tracking myself, I no longer have to be within reach of the computer. Again, well done. I should also take the time to mention that the whole DP experience feels really solid now. Startup is still a little slow, but I'll take that over sluggish in-program performance anyday. It really is quick DP, and I've only got a modest Intel Core Duo MBP. Overall, if feel as though DP 7 is an incremental update from 6. But like snow leopard vs leopard, you know they really got it right this time.
