The Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG OS Telephoto Zoom makes telephoto shooting easy for many types of photography such as sport and nature. The lens is built with Special Low Dispersion Glass (SLD) elements to provide corrections for all types of aberrations. Its super-multi-layer coating adds to the excellence of images by reducing flare and ghosting, yielding high contrast images throughout the focal range. Since the lens has a built-in motor, the auto focus will function with the Nikon D40, D40x, D60, D3000, and D5000 digital cameras.

Sigma's OS (Optical Stabilizer) can reduce shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. This lens rounded 9-blade diaphragm creates an attractive blur for out-of-focus areas of a picture. With a minimum focusing distance of 59.1" throughout the entire zoom range and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.9, this zoom is a good choice for close-up imaging. The compact construction of the lens helps make it good for travel and hand-held telephoto photography.

I bought this lens as a cheap temporary replacement for my Nikon 80-400mm. I used it for wildlife photography and shooting pet portraits. I was surprise at the quality of the images. They were surprisingly sharp and without chromatic aberration. The lens focuses quickly and doesn't "search". It was great for small birds at my feeder. The only down side is the motor is noisy. In general I'm very impressed by then lens. It also impressed my boyfriend who is a professional photographer. We tested it for pet photography and the quality of the pictures was unexpected. I would recommend it for a casual photographer who would like a general purpose lens, a parent wanting shoot their kinds sporting event or take it on vacation, travelers and students (like me) and semi-professonials. Its a good value. You can't beat the price for what you get. Also, when traveling you don't have to worry about it loosing $$$$ if something happens to it it can easily be replaced.

There was a problem with the auto-exposure interface when used on a Nikon d5100. When used in aperture priority mode, the image was overexposed. Correct exposure was achieved in shutter priority or if LivedView is used. Since I live 10 minutes from an authorized Sigma (and Nikon) service center, I had them look at it. They adjusted both to factory specs which reduced but did not eliminate the problem. It is likely a firmware issue that cannot be corrected. I discussed this with another owner who said he had the same experience but when used on a D3300.

In addition, the service center said AF was slower and more noisy than it should be and replaced some parts. The AF is now much better but it is still only marginally usable in aperture mode.

Since this is only for occasional use (I use wide angle and "normal" 85%) of the time, I guess this will be acceptable considering the price. In the case of focal lengths I expect to get more use from this experience convinces me tom stick with Nikon.

Comments about Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG OS Lens for Nikon Digital Cameras:

At the price, is excellent. Not as sharp as the Nikon vr model but pretty close. Focuses a bit slow but if your subject isn't moving you won't have a problem. I only use it outside on bright days.

Comments about Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG OS Lens for Nikon Digital Cameras:

I bought the Sigma 70-300 DG OS mostly to photograph the moon. For this it has proven excellent. I had previously borrowed a Nikon 70-300 VR and thought it was pretty good but the Sigma lens is better for less than half the price. The lens is not very loud and the OS works at least as good as the Nikon lenses I have.

I use my new lens at The Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge to take pictures of the wonders of nature. I love the fact that I can zoom in on everything! I also like the fact that it's not too heavy to use without a tripod. I have noticed that it is sometimes slow to react while using the auto zoom. However, I've been able to capture images that I have not been able to get with my other lenses.

Comments about Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG OS Lens for Nikon Digital Cameras:

Decided to purchase these lens as a all-around telephoto expecting average results, was pleasantly surprised with the outcomes - very competitive for the price range and definitely a telephoto any enthusiast would value before going pro and spending 10x or more on similar focal length in ultra-sharp glass. The build is solid, performance decent, auto-focus relatively accurate and, most importantly, results are very sharp.

Using the lens primarily for train photography, particularly panning close-up and tighter landscape frames.

If you are building amateur/learner/enthusiast kit - definitely worth the try. Gave it a shot, given B&H's sale price, and was a worth risk before going all out for 70-200mm, f/2.8 options at a much higher cost. Now have cash for filters, cards and possibly another camera body.

Comments about Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG OS Lens for Nikon Digital Cameras:

I needed a telephoto zoom lens with greater capacity than the one I have. I am an artist working from photos and like to get pictures of people out at fairs or in malls, etc. The farther away I can stand with my camera, the less noticeable I am. This lens allows me to take the shots I want without making the people I'm photographing paranoid (as in, who is she? why is she taking my picture?) As always, a lens of this type makes the camera a bit heavier, but that's the only down side and not a big deal.

Be sure to contact B&H when ordering to make sure you're shipped a lens with the newest firmware from Sigma. Those lenses with the newest firmware have a sticker on the box saying it's "D5300 Compatible." The one I was sent was not the newest factory version with the new firmware so I've had to ship the lens off to Sigma for a firmware upgrade. Without the newest firmware the autofocus and OS will not work properly with the D5300.

The OS is great to have, it's like the VR on a Nikon lens. It's a little heavy but you would expect that. It's just a cool lens.

Comments about Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG OS Lens for Nikon Digital Cameras:

I am by no means an expert -- just a semi-serious shutterbug -- so this is simply an amateur's assessment. I know the lower-end telephoto zooms have limitations, but as far as bang for the buck, this was perfect. After a few days using this lens, I'm very happy with the choice. It feels good and gets along quite well with my Nikon D5300. Autofocus works well and the optical stablization is going to be a big help. Kudos to B&H for their packaging, as it clearly went through a few bumps on the way to my doorstep (yet the lens was unscathed).

Comments about Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG OS Lens for Nikon Digital Cameras:

This is a "low end" lens, that positively has all the features I was looking for. I am especially pleased that all my camera's (Nikon d3000) automation is translated to the lens and the stabalization feature was well worth the extra money.
I am also thrilled that B&H is still out there and has an up-to-date, and very well organized web presence. I bought from them years ago (pre-digital cameras) and am pleased to say they are every bit as reliable
Finally, I contacted the support group via telephone to help me make a choice and they are as pleasant and well-informed as ever

I haven't used this lenses enough to give you a definitive, great lenses or junk lense....but what I can tell you is that it is a very well constructed.

The look and feel of this lenses is very impressive.
The focus is very snappy and I'm very happy with the photos I've taken at 70mm or 300mm.

The vibration reduction is a must have with a lenses like this and it doesn't disappoint. It is a huge difference when you turn on and off the vr.

Best of all .. if you're new to this expensive hobby like myself, this lense won't break the bank.

Comments about Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG OS Lens for Nikon Digital Cameras:

I have mixed feelings about this lens. I received a great price because Sigma was running a promotion in January. I wouldn't pay more then full price or over $ for this lens. I have to admit, when your in the 70-135-150mm range the lens is pretty flawless. The quality is nice. However, it seems too soft for my taste. Also, I had issues focusing on subjects at 300mm. The other issue that ticked me off was chromatic aberration around 200-300mm range. Overall...I'm a little disappointed in this Sigma lens, but I will continue to use it because the range is nice to have.

Comments about Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG OS Lens for Nikon Digital Cameras:
