The Lowepro Pro Trekker 300 AW Backpack (Mica and Black) is a lightweight, rugged, hydration-ready, expedition camera backpack designed to carry a Pro digital SLR camera body with lens attached (up to 300mm f/2.8), 4-5 additional lenses, flash; tripod or monopod, accessories, personal gear and a widescreen laptop computer up to a 15.4". The pack is made from AZ Dobby ballistic nylon polyurethane exterior with Hypalon trim, a Velex brushed nylon and polyurethane lining and HDPE (High-density Polyethylene) interior foam padding. It has a set of padded and adjustable dividers to customize the interior.

The Pro Trekker 300 AW has a removable waistpack that serves in two ways, first as a traditional backpack lid, providing extra security and weather protection, and second as a waistpack with a mesh-covered back pad. It also has an All Weather AW Cover with cinch straps that protects the pack from the elements. There is a Checkpoint-friendly 15.4" laptop sleeve in the front pocket that adheres to most airline requirements eliminating  the need to remove your laptop from the sleeve at security checkpoints. Three integrated tripod sleeves at the front and sides of the pack store, protect and secure tripods, monopods, trekking or ski poles. It has 2 large side pockets that can store large accessories or personal items; 1 is designed for a hydration bladder and includes a seam-sealed pouch that can hold up to 70 ounces of liquid (does not include hydration reservoir), 4 memory card pockets and a removable cord management pouch. There are 2 roomy pockets and a key clip in the removable waistpack. The SlipLock attachment loops and sturdy D-rings are used to carry optional accessories.

The pack is carried by a heavy-duty grab handle, an adjustable-torso harness system, with a Pack Jack tool that provides a fully customized and comfortable fit. Using the tool, the wearer can shorten or lengthen the distance between shoulders and hips. There is a 10-point adjustment system that allows customize fitting at the top of the pack, shoulders, torso, sternum, waist and lumbar areas. There is an adjustable, removable waistpack that includes thick, moisture wicking material and mesh-covered padding to provide added comfort and compression straps on the bottom.

I was looking for a pack that could carry all my gear, food, water, and take on hiking clothes in our trip to the San Juan Mountains in Colorado. The Pro Trekker 300 fit the bill exactly. The larger pack would have been better but might have been too big to fit in a regional jet's overhead bin. The 300 barely fit. Checking it was not an option since it had all my gear. I made it fit.

On the trail, I carried a Canon 7D, 300mm f2.8L, 70-20mm f4L, 24-70mm 2.8L, 10-20mm 3.5, Manfrotto tripod, 70+ oz of water, 4 sandwiches, chips, snacks, and had spare room to attach jackets, sweatshirts, and overpants as we shed clothes when the temperature changes from 25 degress in the morning to 70+ degrees in the afternoon.

Fully loaded the pack was 40+ lbs. At my height of 6'3", I adjusted the straps so that weight was distributed nicely to the lombar region. I carried the pack an average of 8-10 miles per day and got some great shots.

I have no qualms about taking this pack on future hiking / photographic trips.

    Well Done LowePro!!

The drawbacks for me: The zippers are very difficult to open and close. This is due to the drip proofing but makes usability difficult. It has a rain bonnet built in so not sure why the zippers have to be so tight. Once you get this thing stuffed full of your photo gear, when trying to insert my thin iPad3, it is too tight in that laptop sleeve. What good is it? It is very difficult to even put the EMPTY laptop sleeve into it's slot. Mostly, I upgraded to this one from my LowePro Slingpack to be able to also carry the iPad and it doesn't work. All the compartments they give you are so tight you can't get much into them. So, for me, it was a waste of money.

Comments about Lowepro Pro Trekker 300 AW Backpack:

I was looking for a backpack that would hold my camera gear, 150-600mm lens, 70-300mm, two cameras, and several other lenses, and a place to hold my tripod; this pack held all my equipment with additional space for a few other accessories. It even has additional pockets for memory cards, lens filter kits, lens caps, and much more. This backpack is extremely well made and durable. A few reviews stated it was heavy, but what do you expect with a pack that is built so tough? I was very impressed with the construction. This is one you will have to see to believe. The zippers are very strong and sealed to help keep out moisture. I weigh about 130 lbs. and have two torn rotator cuffs and a torn bicep, but was able to tote the pack loaded for a casual hike in the woods. I walked a couple miles in steep terrain, resting from time to time, I was able to manage the pack with no problem. I forgot to mention, I even had a place for my water bottle and snacks. If you want something that will hold all your camera gear and protect it at the same time, this is the product.

At the time of writing this (October 2014) I have really only used the bag once. I spent a couple hours hiking with it for a couple hours in light rain. It was very comfortable. I love the built-in hydration compartment and the dedicated tripod-holder. These were 2 things my previous bag did not have.

Comments about Lowepro Pro Trekker 300 AW Backpack:

I am in the middle of a Hawaiian trip. Bag contains most of my photo stuff. The laptop compartment is way too small. So I used it for my Cotton Carrier. The only other issue is the zippers are difficult to open and close but that's to be expected considering its water tight. I like the bag allot. It fits easily into airline overheads. I will pack more efficiently next time.

        Awesome Bag

        By Mlawut

Comments about Lowepro Pro Trekker 300 AW Backpack:

I went from the lowepro mini trekker to this bag. To say that bag was mini compared to Pro Trekker AW 300, is an understatement. Even though this bag is quite a bit larger & heavier, it is well balanced. It rests on my shoulders & waist very well & is easy to walk with. Which is nice because I'm going to the Smokies this weekend.

Comments about Lowepro Pro Trekker 300 AW Backpack:

I got this for a 3-week hiking and camping trip to various parts of California, including the San Bernardino National Forest and Yosemite National Park. Overall, the backpack is excellent. I had a hard time deciding between the 300 and the 400. The 300 is huge. I carried a Nikon D4, 14-24mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm and the Sigma 50mm prime. I also had a SB-910 flash, Lee Filter kit, a Gitzo Traveller tripod and a bunch of other accessories. With all of that, there were still empty areas in the main compartment. I added a 2-liter water reservoir that fit perfectly. The bag is comfortable and I wore it all day hiking with no discomfort. I ended up unexpectedly having to shoot an event while on my vacation and the removable waistpack was a lifesaver as it easily held a 70-200mm f/2.8 so I could exchange lenses.

The negatives include a completely inadequate laptop capability. I carry a full-size, 15" laptop that fits well into several other camera bags I own that specify a 15.4" laptop. The case for the laptop in this backpack is clearly designed only for ultrabooks (ultra-thin). It will not accept my computer. It is not even close the case will not go on the computer even an inch. The only other negative worth mentioning is the challenges getting into the main camera compartment. You need to disconnect several cinch straps and fight the tightest zipper I have ever encountered.

I was looking for a protective, easy to carry pack for my camera system. I found it. Not the answer to every scenario because sometimes I need a quick change system like my Lowepro top load system with attached lens bags. Both will accommodate my full size body with the 100 to 400mm zoom and a variety of lenses. (about 4 lenses, flash, accessories) The pack also has room for a small PC, light coat and hat. Just what I needed in Alaska. Great trip with great equipment.

Very happy with this bag. Very comfortable to wear, even for shorter people - which was one of my concerns. It holds two bodies with lenses attached if the lenses aren't too long. One thing I would like to see is a bigger space to squeeze a jacket or other bits n pieces in i.e. water bottle etc. I think the hydration pack part is a bit of a wasted space, for me at least.

I love that there is removable parts to this backpack so it's not as heavy or cumbersome. Love the removable top that makes into a fanny pack and that it holds water bottles on the outside. Also, the tripod holders are ample and very convenient. Great backpack that feels good on the back, well balanced and designed pack. Perfect for a lot of lenses, bodies and accessories. This is my second and perhaps last backpack!

Comments about Lowepro Pro Trekker 300 AW Backpack:

I bought this pack for a good general purpose bag to store and carry all my gear and use for day hiking. It's extremely well made and high quality material. I looked at the 400aw as well but thought it might be a little too big and bulky for everyday use. Couldn't be happier with the the pack. Tons of storage and room for gear/accessories. Easily adjustable. Multiple slots for tripod. Rain cover works perfectly. Overall great buy!

This is a well built backpack with plenty of storage. The straps, back, and waistbelt are made for comfortable hiking with a heavy camera gear. It is customizable for a variety of cameras and lenses. The padding is very good.

The sides are padded and stiff. My personal preference would have been for the sides to be softer so the pack section could be compressed for easier transport and as a carry-on for plane travel. It would be helpful if the waistbelt (not the removable waist pack) could be taken off. That would be helpful when flying.

If traveling and need a bag that maximizes storage and still fits under the airplane seat this is the one. I would recommend removing the hip belt and stowing it with your checkin bag. The Tripod carrying options are nice for a traveling weight/size tripod. The zippers get easier to use with time. Spent 2 weeks in HI & had no complaints. Doesn't carry everything but carried what I needed and then some. Found it comfortable for day hikes

Comments about Lowepro Pro Trekker 300 AW Backpack:

I'm an enthusiast with a growing collection of gear- the main ones being a gripped Canon 60D, several lenses including 70-300L, plus a 055 Manfrotto 055CXpro tripod. I usually carry my gear in one of my two Think Tank shoulder bags, but I can no longer fit all my gear for storage in one of those, meaning if I want to bring most of my gear with me somewhere I'd need to bring both Think Tanks and look like a pack mule. This was my reasoning for getting a larger backpack- something that I could carry on a plane if necessary (including a laptop or ipad), and also contain parts of my kit I don't want to carry with me on any given outing.
The bag seems very well made, and fits a lot. I don't find it heavy even full. The downsides are it is fairly complicated, and not quick access especially for the main compartment. To access the main compartment you need to unclip at least one pair of small straps, and probably take the tripod out if you are holding a full-size tripod. The zippers have weather protecting margins that make the zipper somewhat difficult to open or close at times.
The lack of quick-access had me a bit down on the bag, until this morning. I needed to travel by ATV (4-wheeler), and get a spotting scope, tripod, my camera plus a couple of lenses, water bottle and coffee thermos, and assorted other gear with me. Given the extreme vibrations, I can't just strap these things to the ATV. I decided to give my backpack a try. I was worried I'd be top-heavy or off-balance. I was also worried that the tripod would be in the way somehow, either hitting the seat on the low end or the back of my helmet on the top. Thankfully none of these were problems, the pack fit well and was very comfortable on a combined 2 hrs on the ATV, and with the belt and chest harness, it stayed put. Even though I have problems walking through doors with a tripod strapped in, I had no problems on the ATV. I know that most people won't need a pack for ATV riding, but this makes me think it would be a great pack for hiking or biking- anything for which you need to reach a destination before diving into the pack. I'll definitely start using it for more than just storage.

I purchased this because I needed a bigger bag to hold all of my gear. This does that with room to spare! I've not yet gone backpacking with it, but feel it will facilitate a day hiking in the mountains very well. There is a level of adjustability to this backpack that I appreciate.

Comments about Lowepro Pro Trekker 300 AW Backpack:

Positive: - Super quality materials, everything about this backpack looks and feels like it's made to last. I was actually surprised by the quality on this thing.- Comfortable, fully loaded it's still very comfortable and the waist belt really takes the weight of your shoulders. - Plenty of features, like the simple but ingenious memory card rooms where you can easily mark which cards are full for faster swapping, I can probably fit 4 tripods/ monopods on the outside of this bag but I used the tripod catcher pocket to put cables in instead for super easy access, two pockets on top of the bag gives easy access to cellphones, passports and other small things you might need, the side pockets perfectly fit my NTG-2 With the deluxe windshield on and the shock mount from Pearstone, perfect fit, throw your 15" MacBook in there! and many more features - You can adjust the backpack to fit your size easily Negatives - This is not an easy access backpack, but I knew that going in. The zippers protecting the main compartment are really tough and splashproof, which makes them slow. Keep in mind that you have to take the entire backpack off to access your gear, but if speed is not a major concern for you, this is a wonderful backpack! I wish there was an add on I can put on my waist belt to put my 5D with 24-105 mm on that would just carry exactly that for super fast access, best of both worlds. I'm sure it exists, but I haven't found it yet.I was looking into the Tenba Roadie II and the Rover Pro, which BH also delivers, but I ended up with this one.My only regret, I wish I'd get a bigger size, to put all my stuff in there.

I use this bag trekking and travelling. it is absolutely amazing! I carry in it all of my gear (DSLR Body + 24-300mmm, 105mm, 300mm Prime, and all the cleaning kits, 2L Water bag). on the external I always have tripod and monopod. you will find numerous straps and places to add your own gear and I never had problems fitting it even into small planes. it is heavy but protecting all of my gear is the priority. if you plan to travel and HIKE with it - don't think twice. if you need to travel and just move around places with it - look for something else...
