The padKONTROL from Korg is a USB/MIDI studio controller that features 16 illuminated drum trigger pads and the company's KAOSS technology based X-Y pad. In addition to accessing drum sounds and samples, the controller can also control virtual synthesizers and effects, trigger loops and video clips, and even act as transport controls for DAW software programs.

The controller is ideal for creating natural, organic sounding drum beats. Each of the 16 pads can be individually assigned a note number and MIDI channel allowing you to control a single drum kit, or map it to control different devices in your setup at the same time. Eight different dynamic curves are available for each pad, or you can set each pad to its own fixed level.

The X-Y pad adds real-time control of both flam and roll timing and dynamics. Moving a finger from left to right increases the speed of the roll, or the distance between the notes, while moving up the pad surface increases the volume of the roll, or the volume of the second note in the flam. With the addition of an optional footswitch you can add real kick drum parts, or close an open hi-hat.

USB/MIDI controller combining an assignable X-Y touchpad that provides for natural sounding flams and rolls, 16 illuminated trigger pads, assignable knobs and a foot-pedal input
8 dynamic curves are available for each pad, or each pad can be set to its own fixed level
Multiple pads can be set to play the same drum but at different fixed velocities, providing varied but predictable performance every time
A MIDI message can be assigned to each pad, and set for momentary or toggle operation. In addition to sending a value as the drum pad is touched, a specific value can be sent as the pad is released, allowing the pad to be used like a button or switch for controlling any function of a virtual synthesizer or DAW
X-Y pad adds real-time control of both flam and roll timing and dynamics
The X-Y pad can also be assigned to control any 2 continuous controllers in real-time
2 assignable knobs provide continuous control of any other 2 MIDI parameters
Whenever a drum pad is struck or a controller moved, the built-in display shows what message or value is being sent, delivering accurate confirmation of what is being performed
Once all the controllers are set to the user's liking, the entire setup can be saved in any one of the 16 "User Scenes"
In addition, 30 preset scenes are included, designed to instantly match the controller to some of the most popular music software programs

Comments about Korg padKONTROL - MIDI Studio Controller:

I've owned this little guy for a few years now and it's still holding up strong. The thing I like about this controller compared to other pad controllers on the market is the sensitivity. You don't have to mash the thing to get a note to register.

Definately read the manual as soon as you get it. If you do that programing it to the software you're using should be a sinch.

Another thing that is great is that the controller actually can show up as two seperate controllers on your computer. This is a plus when using it with multiple softwares at the same time. For example, I use it to control both Traktor Pro 2 and Ableton Live simultaniously by assigning the pads for different midi inputs.

              The footpedal input is assignable!

The main con that I've come across is when you're jamming a little too hard you'll sometimes get crosstalk between the pads, but for that to happen you have to really hit a pad excessively hard.

Overall I love this thing and would definately recomend it.

Comments about Korg padKONTROL - MIDI Studio Controller:

For the money, it's hard to beat. And it generally works fine for tapping out things. Setting it up is fraught with problems though. Even using it without setting up often requires a trip to the manual. Sometimes it just doesn't seem to want to do what it's supposed to.
A well documented problem is the octave shift in its midi numbering. So it can be very troublesome to program, since middle C is not likely to be what your DAW expects. I still haven't managed to get some of the functions to work as expected.
Another point to note is that it won't pass midi signals through the midi port without external power, which it does not include.
If I were needing another device like this, I would get something else. Best to avoid all of the cheap Korg products.

Comments about Korg padKONTROL - MIDI Studio Controller:

Integrates with FL Studio 9, but not in the easiest way. They should really have that option as a controller (or Korg making a mapped pack for that controller)

Still haven't been able to get sound from Korg Kontrol Editor. Don't know if I'm suppose to be able to?

Pads are very nice, great feel. Somewhat less 'solid' that I'd prefer, but great nevertheless. The USB cord included sticks out from the back of the unit entirely to far.

Comments about Korg padKONTROL - MIDI Studio Controller:

I am (seriously) a pad god... I teach private reason and protools lessons with a main focus towards controlerism. I've had an m-audio trigger finger for several years and have been satisfied with it but not blown away.

i will say that the pad controll seems more velocity sensitive and though it has less knobs and faders the x-y pad and the pedal input feature, which allows you to basically turn a sustain pedal into a bass drum pedal, have reduced my trigger finger to dj software controler

yeah I know akai makes MPCs but the pads on their midi controllers leave much to be desired. they obviously make the bulk of their money from mpc sales and would be in a tight spot if people stopped using them for software that is not only cheaper but easier to operate but does WAY MORE.

I am an AVID product loyalist and although it pains me to trash my trigger finger the padkontrol beats it HANDS DOWN!!!
