Product Highlights
  • Handle & Stud Included
  • Powered by Sony Camcorder Battery
  • Compact LED Fixture
  • Change Color--3000°K to 5000°K
  • AC/DC Operation Possible

The Lowel Blender AC/DC Kit (120V/240VAC/12VDC) throws an entirely new light on the problems of shooting in mixed-light environments: when neither tungsten nor daylight are the right color, you just fudge it, right? Not anymore--the Blender makes it possible to fine-tune your lights to match (or contrast with) whatever light you're grappling with. With twin arrays of daylight and tungsten LEDs in one fixture, two simple dials make it possible to dial in the light to exactly the color you choose (from approximately 3000°K to 5000°K). This tiny unit (1.2 lbs and small enough to hold with a pistol grip) puts out a solid 56W of light, and it's dimmable from 100% to 10%. It runs off a Sony camcorder battery sled (battery not included), or the included 120V/240V AC adapter. Also included are a handle and stud, a set of three different diffusers and a Lowel Blender Single Carry Bag for transporting the kit.

Comments about Lowel Blender AC/DC Kit (120V/240VAC/12VDC):

I have been a fan of the Blender for a long time, having used the prototype before Lowel commercialized the product. I recently purchased one for use on my documentary projects, as I find myself in need of just a little extra light now and then and I don't always want to take my lighting kit with me. Compared to competitive products available at lower prices that feel like they are about to fall apart in you hands, this is a solid unit, with decent light output, and the ability to dial in the amount of tungsten and daylight you want makes the light flexible and quick to use, no spending time fiddling with filters. A set of diffusion filters give you flexibility in terms of how you treat the hard light produced by the large, high-current LEDs. The Blender can be powered with an AC adapter or an outboard battery (different sleds are available for different camcorder batteries). At first you might think that the fact you can't install batteries in the unit itself is a limitation, however, AA NiMH batteries don't provide the current that Li-ion camcorder batteries can. The designers clearly knew that the inconvenience of an outboard battery is minor compared to the advantages of using camcorder batteries. I use smart Sony L and M series Li-ion batteries with an LED display so I always know ahead of time if a battery change is coming up. The light output is nice and smooth as long as you use the prismatic diffuser. The design, however, does have a few problems which I hope Lowel will fix in future iterations (LED technology changes rapidly and the Blender is due an update soon). In the Blender II or whatever the call it, I'd like to see a locking power connector that uses a metal screw thread or some other solid, professional connector, rather than the cheesy plastic tabs that are on the end of the current power plug. The battery sled could be a tad more robust, I feel like the plastic belt clip might break at any moment. In addition, from a visual design perspective, the "Lowel Blender" label on the front of the light is out of scale. The type size is so large that the light screams out its name. I covered mine with black tape. I like it quiet when I'm shooting a documentary, both aurally and visually. I would have liked to give this light five stars, I'm very fond of it and it's one of my favorite LED lights in terms of price/performance/flexibility, however, the build quality of the battery sled, the funky plastic locking tabs on the power connector, along with the screaming name plate, all take away from an otherwise five start experience. Of course, most of the Blender's competition in its price range and light output would be lucky to reach three star status.

Comments about Lowel Blender AC/DC Kit (120V/240VAC/12VDC):

I like this light because it provides dramatic lighting for wedding receptions, wedding details like cakes and wedding bands, and even some types of portraits. Even though small, the light is pretty strong so try not to use full blast or shine directly on guests or couple because they squint. I love the changing dial tones for tungsten and daylight. It really lets you handle mixed light situations well. Battery life is VERY good - lasted through the entire reception without a problem so no need to buy extra batteries. There are a few things that could have made this product even better: 1) battery pack fitted on the device instead of separate unit that attaches to light; 2) color gels that could be fitted directly onto the light; 3) the cord from battery to light could have a securing system so wouldn't pull out as easily when moving; 4) reduction of weight for at least the battery; 5) the system has a lot of separate parts which can be very frustrating for a photographer who already needs to keep track of equipment. I know it seems like there a lot of cons in my post but overall I really like the light.

Comments about Lowel Blender AC/DC Kit (120V/240VAC/12VDC):

For a compact light of it's type it puts out a good amount of light. Well-built. A/C power connection could use a redesign but certainly does the job.
