Vivitar SF-3000 Digital Slave Flash

B&H # VI3000
You Pay: $14.00
Product Highlights
  • Built-in Digital Slave
  • For Use with Any Digital Cameras
  • Mounts to Hot Shoe
  • Guide Number 110' @ ISO 100
  • 3 Power Settings
  • 2 Auto & 1 Manual Exposure Modes

The powerful (Guide Number 110' @ ISO 100) yet affordable SF-3000 Digital Slave Flash from Vivitar is a sturdy unit with selectable firing and built-in digital slave circuitry. Plus, it has 3 power levels to give you control over light output, and features a switch on the back which allows you to select between the two different triggering modes, making it compatible with any camera on the market.

Ordinary slave units do not work with many digital cameras because these cameras use a very rapid set of pre-flashes to set the white balance of the camera's image sensor chip but not the exposure. The slaves will typically fire on the pre-flash it senses, while the digital camera captures the image on the last flash. Thus, the extra light from the slave does not show up in the digital camera photo. The SF-3000 flash units are designed to fire on a flash, sensed by their built-in optical sensor and circuitry, so the effect of the flash is not lost.

I use it as a slave fill flash with my Sony A900 and its dedicated flash. It does a good job of filling in and minimizing red-eye. It doesn't weigh much and it works well. A pair of fully charged NiMH batteries doesn't last too long, but I'd rather carry around more batteries and get more light. My only complaint is that the "ready" light is very dim.

At first I purchased one of these units as well as a SF4000 to see how effective they are, and and found the SF3000 to be simple, easy to use, and works as expected with a Nikon L100, a Sony S40, and a Panasonic FP8... In comparison, to the SF4000, it seems to have slightly more light output and I decided to purchase two more of the SF3000...

That was a mistake, number two is erratic triggering, and number three triggers fine when at room temperature but get it cool in an unheated work environment and it quits triggering...

In the meanwhile, the SF4000 is proving to be very reliable albeit with slightly softer light due to its more complex adjustable light prismatic filter in front of the flash.

The decision I have made is to purchase several of the SF4000 to replace the SF3000 units, for an additional $3.00, the SF4000 is proving to be a better buy and more reliable unit.

A note about recycling time, about 4 seconds with fresh NiMH batteries and good for 150-200 flashes which is pretty good for two AA cells powering it in my opinion.

Comments about Vivitar SF-3000 Digital Slave Flash:

I bought a pair of these, at this price, how could I not? I use them as fill and background lights. They are fairly powerful for their size (about the same as 1/8th on my Nikon SB-600) and are small enough to be unobtrusive. I have had no issue with the slave function, although to be honest, my longest test has been about twenty feet, indoors. That's all you really need for the way that I'm using them.
There are a couple of cons, but they were expected. They do feel cheap, but as long as you're careful with them, I don't see any problems. Second, they do not have variable output, again, not surprised, it states this in the description. What I have done to get around this is use ND3 gels. I have made up a few to match different outputs. Bare, it is equal to 1/8, as I said before. 1 ND3 is equal to 1/16 on the SB-600 and two ND3 gels is equal to 1/32 with flash compensation of +.3 The final con is the recycle time, it takes about 6 or 7 seconds with fresh batteries; I wish they could've improved on that a little bit.

I bought two of these flashes mainly to use as fill light in some corners of the background. They act well as slaves and although they aren't too powerful and do not offer output power contrtol. They are good for the use I had in mind.

Comments about Vivitar SF-3000 Digital Slave Flash:

The SF-3000 Slave Flash by Vivitar works great and it is a real strong bargin also. The unit gives enough light for most needs and with the 4 settings it works with all my point shoot cameras. On a light stand with a umbrella it has good balance. This small unit will give you what you need in a light wieght and compact slave.

After a brief test to make sure that the slave flash fires in sync with my camera's flash, I was off and running with it. I use it to take pictures at distances farther away than the 13 feet my camera's flash is capable of. You will have to experiment with it to get it to work the way you want it to, but that's what makes it fun to use. Recharging between shots takes a tad bit longer than I would like it to, but I can live with that.
Overall, I'm pleased with the results it gives me.

Small and just right for having a second flash when one isn't enough. Very inexpensive. Quite handy to always carry in your camera bag.
