Comments about Tamrac 5589 Expedition 9x Backpack (Black):

I've had this bag and consistantly used it for about six months. Having two actively used cameras and having undergon years of equipment accumulation I've finally found a camera bag that's fit for almost all photo occasions when exploring for scenes to photograph. With this bag I can store two camera bodies; a Nikon FX plus a Nikon DX camera, two flash heads, six variable full frame type lenses (with the DX body that translates to 12 fast lenses), and an assortment of filters. I can also store extra batteries, recharging equipment, a lightweight tripod, plus various additional extensions and miscellaneous equipment. Being rather elderly, I found I can easily tote this bag as a backpack or use it on a wheeled baggage handler; tied down with 2 or 4 (depending upon cord lengths) bungee cords. The bag fits me and my needs, that's why I say it's a winner. However, I do think the front flap cover tends to, at times, be a tad cumbersome unless the bag is layed on a flat surface before opening.

Great pack-haven't traveled on an airline with it yet-it will be a tight fit on some of the smaller aircrafts and possibly not fit.

Only had this about 2 weeks but love the build and the best part are the thick zippers!! Had a Lowepro for 10 years and finally the zippers gave out...
Seems this bag will last even longer..

Recently used it to carry my D800, 14-24mm, 24-70mm and various filters and accessories on a hike through Zion in Arizona. The bag perfectly fit the equipment, and the shoulder straps/harness were comfortable and stayed tight without much give. Plenty of storage space for batteries and other ancillary stuff. A high quality bag I've come to expect from anything made by Tamrac.

Don't let looks deceive you on this bag, it's much larger than what it appears, which by the way is a good thing. I am able to put all my camera items into this bag (including my tripod if I arrange the panels to do so). The multiple moveable panels are a great feature allowing you to set up the bag the way you want for the items you have. I was able to fit almost all my lens', camera batteries, filters, cables, two digital cameras (with lens attached), small pocket camera, palm video camera, and other odds and ends into this backpack.

Comments about Tamrac 5589 Expedition 9x Backpack (Black):

I do sports and wildlife photography and often take a 300, 70-200, 24-70 and a 600f4 along with at least three bodies. The 9x is the only backpack I have found that allows me to carry all my gear in one pack comfortably. The 9x has been made to accommodate the fact that long lenses are quite heavy. When I have my 9x packed for a couple of days in the bush, It weighs in excess of 25 kilograms (55 pounds) and I can hike for hours with no discomfort from the backpack. The design of the accessory compartments both on the front and inside the front panel make storage of multiple batteries and cards easily accessible. The red flaps on each slot make it easy to identify the spent batteries and full cards from the fresh ones saving time. Overall I do not think the pack has a down side as it has been specifically made for big glass and it does it's job perfectly.

I've had this pack for about 4 years, and have had it in rain, cold, dust, heat and on airplanes, back of the car, etc and it's virtually indestructible. Zippers work perfect every time, nothing has torn, interior is tough as leather... GREAT bag.

Comments about Tamrac 5589 Expedition 9x Backpack (Black):

I decided to go with the Expedition 9x because I recently bought a 500mm f/4 lens and by no means this would fit into my previous (smaller) backpack. The Expedition 9x is surpringly spacious and it does not only hold the big lens but my two DSLRS, flashes, and at least another 4 smaller lenses such as 100mm macro, 70-200mm f/4, 50mm f/1.4, and 24-70mm f/2.8. The backpack is huge though and it will not be accepted as cabin luggage by all domestic airlines because of its size, even if you take advantage of the size adjustment feature. You will want to double check before you go on air travel.
The Expedition 9x is very robust and well made. I have not yet used it in the field but walked around with it fully packed for some hours; it's comfortable to carry around. I missed the waist padding from the Expedition 8x though. Anyway, this is the solution if you like to carry your 500mm monster on your back and there is hardly any alternative.
