Comments about Phoenix 800mm f/8 Mirror Manual Focus Lens:

This lens is light and small enough for quick (have to practice manual focus), handheld bird ID shots at high ISO with Canon 30D. It is often useful to take a bad picture, review magnified on camera LCD screen in order to identify a distant bird or animal. Then, if there's time, I can set up with the 50D and 400mm lens or Celestron C5 spotter digiscoping outfit.
Tests so far are surprisingly good. The lens will not compete with canon's L-series on detail, but if the subject is large enough in the frame the image is not too bad. Please note that this is a "fun" lens and has all the draw-backs of mirror lenses. I use the Canon lenses if I plan to print anything.
Other uses: I particularly like the telephoto landscapes. For astrophotography, stick with the scope.

Manual and difficult but still worth it

Comments about Phoenix 800mm f/8 Mirror Manual Focus Lens:

I bought this as a fun toy. I mean 800 mm for that price.
It is totally manual, it has only one f stop and that donut bokeh sure can be ugly. However it is 800 mm cheap and short. Short as in it is actually quite okey to actually walk around with. After having managed to take a few pictures of birds I say that considering the price I am happy with what I have bought.

Comments about Phoenix 800mm f/8 Mirror Manual Focus Lens:

I take a lot of scenery and wildlife pics... Wanted a good zoom lens with a small budget. This lens did the trick. Have not used it a whole lot yet but love it so far. It is a little bulky so it isn;t going to fit in my camera bag with my other stuff. I guess that is a small issue that I can work around. Overall a good lens for the money.

Comments about Phoenix 800mm f/8 Mirror Manual Focus Lens:

I bought this as a low-cost alternative to work with a Rebel XTi, so the 800mm translates to a whopping 1,280mm. Photo quality is adequate for my purposes, which includes some photoblogging, and the occasional enlargement to the 12x16/16x20 range.

One of the quirks is that the lens is quite difficult to hold steady, so leaning it against a solid structure or a tripod is a must. Any amount of hand-shake will translate to the image, so definitely practice before you take the lens out on a serious photo engagement.

While the lens is heavy, it is still lighter than a comparable lens of this magnification. Construction seems durable but oddly the focus ring indicators are turned to the bottom of the lens when using the Canon mount. This may be a quirk with the lens, so it might take some further adjustment.

    Inexpensive Alternative

Comments about Phoenix 800mm f/8 Mirror Manual Focus Lens:

As far as quality, the Phoenix 800mm lens provides crystal clear images...up in your face action. It is lightweight, easy to handle. With a fixed aperture of f8 and manual zoom, focusing is a little touchy. It takes awhile to get used to. If you can afford a pro lens, get one. Nothing will beat a pro lens. But if you're like me, on a limited budget, this is an inexpensive alternative. It's a little slow but all in all, an OK lens. The lens itself needs a lot of light, particularly during daylight hours. I would suggest using it only during daylight hours. Because it is a mirrored lens, the quality is less than a pro lens. You will often get halos when focusing. Do a lot of research before you purchase a Phoenix 800mm, or any mirror lens.
