The AudioFire Pre8 from Echo is a FireWire audio and MIDI interface that's compatible with both Windows and Mac computers. It gives you 16 inputs and 16 outputs of high-resolution audio to the recording software of your choice. Six of the channels feature an auto-sensing capability that adjusts the input sensitivity automatically, depending on what kind of signal you plug into it (mic, line, or instrument).

All of the analog channels on the AudioFire Pre8 have combo XLR and 1/4" TRS balanced inputs. Channels 1 and 2 have dedicated hardware controls for phase, pad, DI, low pass filter, LoZ, and phantom power. There are also channel inserts on the rear panel for these two inputs. Channels 3 - 8 each have their own gain trim knob, and a phantom power button applies +48V to them all. Every input features a 4-segment LED meter that will help you avoid clipping and digital distortion.

In addition to a full-featured set of analog inputs, the AudioFire Pre8 has a powerful digital I/O section. There are 8 channels of ADAT inputs and outputs, with the ability to utilize S/MUX technology and enable 96 kHz recording and playback. The S/PDIF I/O can utilize either the optical or the coaxial connectors. Both ADAT and S/PDIF can adapt to professional and consumer equipment. Wordclock I/O is provided to keep the AudioFire Pre8 in sync with your other gear.

        Comments about Echo AudioFire Pre8 - 16 x 16 FireWire Audio/MIDI Interface:

Well, what can I say, this is Echo alright. The product itself is great! Very stable, lots of features... converters are of a great quality. Usually I do a lot of research before buying things like this for my studio. And I spend a lot of time researching Audiofire. I couldn't find one bad review on it and the specs were great!

Now, about B&H itself. If you noticed, this product here is cheaper then pretty much anywhere else. I was kind of concerned about that... but, when I got it, I hooked it up and everything was great. The support of B&H is also great and the product shipped fast!

Overall, very happy with my purchase and very happy with B&H, will definitely shop with them again!

            Comments about Echo AudioFire Pre8 - 16 x 16 FireWire Audio/MIDI Interface:

After weeks of research, the choice was obvious. The reviews of the Audiofire Pre 8 were consistently great! The pre amps are smooth sounding with plenty of headroom. Also, The design is intuitive. Auto detects Line or Mic level inputs. A winner!

            Comments about Echo AudioFire Pre8 - 16 x 16 FireWire Audio/MIDI Interface:

As a pro studio engineer/tech/consultant, I run Nuendo, Pyramix, Cubase, Wavelab, Tracktion 3, and now PT9 on an armada of Firewire boxes: 2 from RME, a Weiss, 2 mighty Onyx 400F's, a Saffire II, and a MOTU Traveler. Aside from the RME's, the Echo-built Onyx products have proven the most stable, driver wise. Thus, my choice was easy of their flagship AudioFire Pre8 for a suite running PT9 Native on a hot new Mac.

When the box arrived, I set it up and blew new firmware on my usual PC platform, verifying that that unit would launch Nuendo. The subsequent Mac install was effortless, and the downloaded drivers ran without issue. The D/A sound into the Black Lion Audio summing mixer was clean and fat at 96khz.

I wish Echo had retained a feature from my old Onyx, with a dedicated pair of "main" outputs separate from #1,#2 which are not volume controlled. I like that the main output on the AudioFire Pre8 is purely attenuative, and hope (dream?) that is an indication of digital, not analog control. I am a huge proponent of That's Corp. products, and note the use of their monolithic mic pre's in this box. The two "main" inputs have pad, filter, phase flip features found on my much more expensive RME flagship, with an added P.A. style TRS insert for each(!).

I also find the case to be both rugged and good looking for table-top use. Front pannel switching (including power), word clock I/O, and onboard P.S. confirm that this is a pro unit. Metering is attractive and useful; startup display confirms more than just "power-on".

Echo is a dark-horse company who quietly provide rock-solid products with professional level support. Their web site exemplifies this attitude. Buy this unit with confidence.

            Comments about Echo AudioFire Pre8 - 16 x 16 FireWire Audio/MIDI Interface:

Upon polling all my audio engineering friends and acquaintances, Echo seems to be largely in the shadow of Presonus, Focusrite, and M-Audio. Most haven't heard of the brand, a few remark a passing, "Oh yeah, I've heard they come with really good stock pres." This is very true, but the Audiofire units have much more to offer than just great "prosumer" out-of-box preamps.

Echo achieved moderate fame for their groundbreaking Layla units a few years back, but they haven't stopped. Their customer-fueled innovations have yielded a remarkably great line of i/o's known as Audiofire. Not only do they boast improved-on versions of the Layla pres, but they also feature better, faster converters, firewire connectivity, and easy daisy-chaining ability between all Audiofire models (in addition to all functioning with the same drivers). The pre-amps are sleek, intuitively-designed and just WORK.

Though they cost a tad more, I have fallen in love with them over the heavy-weights listed above. I would put Echo second only to the RME Fireface line of interfaces, but Echo's units are less than half the cost. The downside: They're not ProTools approved, but neither is RME. :)

I use in my recording studio to record several singers or several players at a time. My studio is in my bedroom and I don't have a room for live drums so I use my elec drums, plus direct bass, and direct guitar.
