The Canon Tripod Mount Ring D for IS 100mm F/2.8L Macro Lens is designed for the new Canon 100mm f/2.8L macro lens with Image Stabilization. The ring holds the lens more securely than if the camera is mounted on the tripod. Made of a lightweight metal that matches the color of the lens (black), the mount ring is very helpful in extreme close-up photography, where the slightest vibration will show up in your photo.

It's the only tripod mount ring by Canon that works on the 100mm f2.8 macro IS L.
1. Only problem is that if you are using a Canon 1 series or anything with a vertical/battery grip, there's a chance that mounting it to the tripod requires that you attach the camera first, then mounting the camera to the lens. There's very little space between the mount ring to the grip.
2.Need to buy an extra ring to be able to use the two Canon's macro light (the MR or the MT).
But this is the only "option"...

For those of you with a Canon 100-400 or 70-210, how much did you pay for the mount ring on those lenses? Zero. This is the equivalent of paying [$] for a proprietary lens cap. This ring should be in the box with the lens. It is useful for switching quickly from landscape to portrait, but I could easily do without it. Mount your camera directly with this light lens, and make better use of your money elsewhere.

Comments about Canon Tripod Mount Ring D for IS 100mm f/2.8L Macro Lens:

I have always been one for sticking with brand name products. There is never a question of quality and since I did not hedge on the lens I did not even consider anything else. You get what you pay for.

Using it on a tripod with the Canon 100mm Macro is not the same. My Canon 7D is more stable and I'm not affraid of using the macro lens under strange frame. Don't buy cheap ring, the lens deserve the real one from Canon.

Comments about Canon Tripod Mount Ring D for IS 100mm f/2.8L Macro Lens:

I agree with the other reviewers that the Canon Ring D is very expensive and there are much cheaper alternatives that work just fine. Because I am a perfectionist and love the elegance of finely designed tools, I got the Canon Ring D for my 100mm F/2.8 Macro just to see what you get for the extra money. I'm the kind of person that owns a lot of Really Right Stuff gear for that same reason. In the case of the Ring D, I also wondered if it would just be an over-priced accessory?

Luckily, I am happy to report it is the former.

The inner surface of the ring has a soft felt surface that allows smooth rotation of the lens from portrait to landscape. This surface also firmly holds the lens when the tightening screw is set. When the tightening screw has been fully loosened, you pull on it to release the upper half of the ring to quickly remove or install the ring on your lens. When you push the upper half of the ring back down, it snaps into the latch. It takes a firm press to snap it - It would be nice to take a few less grams of force for this. Tightening the screw feels smooth and effortless and you don't have to tighten it very hard to get rock solid grip.

While the following has no effect on performance or reliability, the hinge between the two ring halves is nothing special. There is a little play in it, and it isn't up to the same polish as the other parts of the Ring D.

Unlike some Canon lenses with built-in rings, there is no detent for rotating your camera from portrait and landscape, nor would I want one. For macro you often make tiny rotations for the subject and a detent might get in the way.

I bought a Really Right Stuff Arca-Swiss plate plate for the bottom and this combination is great for use on a Macro rail. Since the Arca-Swiss mount is such a popular mount, I wish Canon included this in the design of their lens feet. People wanting other mounts could still attach those just like they do today. Make sure you order the correct plate as the old and new version of the Canon 100 Macro/ring use different plates.

The last question is - do you really even need this ring mount? The newest 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens isn't that heavy and the balance is fine without it. The lens and camera do feel more solid when using the ring mount, but I haven't taken enough pictures to quantify that benefit.

Getting back to my comment about enjoying fine machinery, I'm very happy with my purchase and recommend the Canon Rind D for photographers willing to pay over three times the price for a little better ease-of-use and a little better fit and finish. If the price was only 1.5X the competition, I'd say everyone should buy the Canon ring.

Comments about Canon Tripod Mount Ring D for IS 100mm f/2.8L Macro Lens:

The D Ring is excellent quality. Works well if you are not using a large pro DSL or a DSL with the extra battery power attachment on a Macro Focusing Rail. Therefore I had to return my ring. I also use Kirk Quick Release set ups and Kirk L-Brackets on all my Canon DSL Cameras and this ring just is not the best for my type of macro set up. However, if you do not use some of this extra camera gear this ring would be of great benefit to attach your camera / macro lens to a tripod for macro work.

Comments about Canon Tripod Mount Ring D for IS 100mm f/2.8L Macro Lens:

After doing commercial photography for 40 years, you learn some tools are just necessary to get the job done correctly and quickly. I work off tripods and studio stands to insure sharpness and good depth of field, but constantly fiddling with a tripod head to change from vertical to horizontal and back again when you have a lot to accomplish, becomes inefficient. I use a Manfrotto 410 geared head for tilts, but when it comes to camera rotation, nothing beats the convenience and speed of the mount ring. I agree that Canon should include the Mount Ring with the lens as it did years ago, but when you consider projected years of use, the cost is not that bad. I use mount rings on their 180 macro and 70-300 lenses and would not consider doing a job without them. If you want to hand hold everything, you don't need it, but if you are after consistency, convenience, and more predictable results, it is hard to beat.

Great tool for the sharpest glass in the Canon EF line up. I purchased this because it provides better tripod stability and camera balance. Also, the tripod collar allows excellent handhold ability when moving around in studio for portraiture.

Get it... I think it's worth it.

Comments about Canon Tripod Mount Ring D for IS 100mm f/2.8L Macro Lens:

This product provides a stable support for the EF 100mm f2.8L MACRO IS USM lens. There were no problems with attaching the lens with mounting ring attached directly to a Canon 50D MkII outfitted with with Battery Grip BG-E6 (despite warnings of clearance issues in the Macro lens user guide).
Although this product is expensive, the build quality is excellent, and is a worthy addition to a high quality lens such as this. Certainly the option to mount the lens directly to a tripod to help offset the size and weight of the 50D Mk II and Battery Grip combination offers added flexibility and shooting options for close-up and copy work.
I would highly recommend this product.

It's usefull when I do portraits and want to go
on vertical format quickly. When I first mounted it
on the lens for the first time it looked like it was not going to fit. Canon is out of control on

Assists in setting up equipment on sliding rail for good shots.
Like the flip opening to remove quickly for hand held opportunity.
                            Price is astronomical ! ! !

Comments about Canon Tripod Mount Ring D for IS 100mm f/2.8L Macro Lens:

Works perfectly - the only wish I have was that it had center markings, for leveling the lens, like the 70-200 2.8 IS lens and ring - otherwise it's a must have.

Comments about Canon Tripod Mount Ring D for IS 100mm f/2.8L Macro Lens:

Need it for when I mount the lens on a tripod and want to shoot portrait-orientation (and be able to adjust the horizon quickly and easily).... but I think it's overpriced.

It doesn't fit very snug (I'm used to the collar for the new 70-200), and feels plasticly cheap.

Comments about Canon Tripod Mount Ring D for IS 100mm f/2.8L Macro Lens:

To the reviewer worried about completely closing with out lens, and closing with a slight "gap" when on lens: The ring is not supposed to completly close, with no gaps. The slight gap allow you to adjust tension.

I Rate it 5 stars for quality, 1 star for price. This tripod ring costs about 50% more than previous Canon tripod rings I've purchased. Thus it's 3 star rating.
